• A note from Gordon regarding this edition of the Requiem

There are numerous “versions” of the Mozart Requiem that are available to choirdirectors and conductors for performance. Most are far from satisfactory or satisfying

to perform. The one available from Kalmus Music is an old Breitkof & Hartel editionand has the trombones sitting out most of the piece. Most disappointing is the tacetduring the Kyrie movement. There is another edition by the British publisher Novello

that I performed in 1974 at a church in Toronto. This edition has the Tuba Mirum solonormally played by the tenor player (2nd part) in the alto (1st) part in alto clef. Also thestems are backwards which makes the part very difficult to read. Finally, there is a

wonderful edition by the publisher Bärenreiter, however the alto (1st) part is written out intenor clef. For some (including myself) this can make the technical navigation in theKyrie movement terrifying.

I have taken the liberty to print out a “new” authentic edition, with all of the aboveproblems fixed and hope you find it satisfactory. Please do get in touch with me for any

errors or suggestions you may have for it.

Sincerely,

Gordon CherryPrincipal Trombone, Vancouver Symphony
