and PV system types Practical work on basic application of PV tool cases Field visit Solar Home System of the Orphanage
Target group: Level 1
Level 2
Level 3
Performance: Two presentations were given on Renewable Energy Resources
and PV System Types. Benefit of solar energy poster was
printed for explaining to the participants. Mobile SHS is installed
for demonstration. PV tool cases is provided for having some
practical work.
Participants:
16 participants attended the course. They are students, teach-
ers, farmers, authorities, electric businessman
Success: First of all, Mr. Chau Kim Heng took the attention of all partici-
pants about using PV applicants with fan cap and he started to
explain what renewable energy is, meanwhile he linked to the
benefit of SHS. Next, Mr. Phok Chrin gave presentation on PV
System Types including video of PV system application for rural
community to the participants. In the afternoon, participants
were explained about the basic use of PV tool cases. At the end
of the training session, the participants were brought to visit the
Orphanage’s houses connected to SHS.

2 Training Preparation
The training held on May 6th, 2009 at Kampong Thom Orphanage. It was organised by
COMPED and ITC. The participants were students, teacher, farmers, government authorities
and electric businessman. Resource persons were from COMPED and ITC and a person
who is from Heng Nguon Electricity Company. Presentation slides were printed, copied and
handed over to participants as hard copies for all trainees. Poster on PV benefit was
mounted on the wall in the training room.
Training materials or tool kits prepared are:
80 Wp PV capacity
2 * 12A Batteries
Charge Controller
Inverter
Applicant board of electric bulbs
PV panel mobile stand
Two PV panel protection boxes
4 PV tool cases
3 Training Performance
The training REEPRO Level 3 Course 5 on PV was separated into 2 parts. There were basic
understanding of PV system and practice using PV tool cases. The training started at 9:00 am
to 12:00 am and 13:30 pm to 15:30 pm.
3.1 Presentation
Individual presentation was included the content as details below:
Presentation slide on Renewable Energy Resources by Mr. Chau Kim Heng:
Introduction
Form of energy
Energy System
By using PV poster, Mr. Chau Kim Heng explained about PV benefit as below:
Social and economical benefit:
Reduce or stop spending for daily electricity consumption
Reliable and affordable energy
Payback period is 4-10 years
Contribute to health care
Reduce dependency on foreign electricity sources
Promote and encourage from the government
Environmental benefit:

Training Documentation Report
Contribute to environmental protection (fuel fossil)
Reduce environmental pollution (NOx, SOx, CO2)
Reduce charcoal waste remaining from energy production
Mr. Phok Chrin, ITC offered a presentation to the trainees about PV Systems Types
Electricity application using solar power
Video on PV system application for rural community by SNV
Showing the electricity supply as a decentralized PV system for an off-grid community
using for lighting, running media and water pumping
Mr. Phok Chrin from ITC explained about the function of PV system:
Conversion from solar light into electricity goes through charge controller, batteries,
Inverter and electrical appliances.
Basic PV system maintenance
In order to have better understanding for the participants, basic practical work with
PV training tool cases was given by Mr. Phok Chrin
Each PV training toolkit comprises of solar cells having protection design, connection boards
for series and parallel, plugs, a multi-meter containing in a case.
Serial Panel Connection
Parallel Panel Connection
Output data measurements
Field visit to the Orphanage’s houses connected with SHS in the Orphanage

3.2 Discussion
Discussion was made by questions and answers during the presentation and practical
works. Some questions were raised as below:
What applicants can we use with solar system?
Where is the energy store?
How much is the SHS for a minimum use and how long it last?
Do we need to change any components of the solar home system? and how much?
3.3 Conclusion
Most of the invited participants were quite mixed among students, authorities, trainers,
teachers, farmers and villagers. The initial training is for the participants about renewable
energy, esp. solar energy is relevant to their daily living and could be one option in concern-
ing with energy supply for their consumption. It is to raise the awareness among the local
community to start pay attention about the global energy crisis and an existing solution

which renewable solar energy. Moreover, this training gave chance for the participants in
having some understanding about the electricity capacity produced by solar cells of PV tool
cases. The most important thing is that the participants were allocated to visit the existing
PV SHS installation at the houses of the orphanage.
4 Questionnaire Evaluation
Questionnaire for this Level 3 was not given. It is kind of dissemination workshop to grass-
root level. However, from the procedures and discussion in the training, the trainees were
very impressed about the new introduction of PV system in their area but as indicated, they
are worried about the high investment cost at the moment.
5 Training Documentation
5.1 Invitation
REEPRO Project invited Mr. Chrin Phork from ITC and another is from Heng Ngoun Com-
pany. Participants were authorities, teachers, students and farmers were invited by Mr. Roth
Seang Hay, Administrative Office Chief of Environment Department, Kampong Thom prov-
ince. The invitation letters were prepared by Department of Environment and delivered to the
participants and the officer also explained about the reason and benefit of the training to
convince them to participate in the training.
