The Renaissance Period What are the key features of art during this period? The Renaissance is a very cultural movement and period that affected European intellectual life. The art created during the times of the Renaissance were mainly based around culture and religion but mostly religion. Most of the art and sculpture was based around stories such as David and Goliath and other sculptures were based on God such as stories from the Bible and of Jesus Christ. Most art during the Renaissance period was commissioned by or for the Catholic Church because Christianity was a very big theme and feature with art at these times. Also lifestyle was a big feature in this period. What was the subject of art during this period? During the Renaissance there was a very strong connection between art and science. The art was subjected towards many scientific factors such as anatomy; however it was also subjected towards religion and ended up in art expressing artistic, scientific and religious backgrounds. Also there were many other influences on art such as Philosophy, Literature, Architecture, Theology, Government and other aspects of society. Did you notice anything of the techniques/materials used during this period? The materials used to make art and sculptures and very different to the materials used in the modern day. Precious metals such as gold, silver and bronze were used a lot during the Renaissance period. After a while gold and silver were restricted and bronze used a lot more for statues, busts, sculptures and minor objects. For use of sculptures different stones were used, such as calcareous stones and sandstones, bigger sculptures were made from Carrara marble, a lot of moulding techniques where used to shape wings, hair and facial features. Techniques such as crafting, moulding and painting where used during this time. A lot of waxing and glossing where used on sculptures and materials such as paper were used for art and drawings.
