Twenty-Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time Dear Friends,

The season is changing, and fall is here. This Sundays Gospel also speaks of change. In the Gospel reading this weekend, we hear about a change of heart. Jesus poses a scenario in which a young man was asked to work by his father, but refused. Later, the young man changes his mind and goes to work in his father’s vineyard. This is a simple story that helps to illustrate that no matter how we initial-ly respond to God’s Will, it is never too late to have a change of heart, a true conversion and turn to him. The theme of this story may seem very familiar to many of us. It is a common human experi-ence. When I, being reflecting on conversion and following the will of God, can’t help but think of Saint Francis of Assisi. St. Francis is by far one of the most popular Saints in the Church. Not only am I re-minded of St. Francis through this Gospel message, but coming this Wednesday, Nov. 4th, the church celebrates the Feast of St. Francis. St. Francis truly manifested a life of conversion. As a young man, St. Francis chose to leave be-hind a life filled with vanity, literally leaving behind every last one of his possessions, forsaking anything that would potentially lead him away from or distract him from following God. St. Francis’ way of life was not only intriguing to those he encountered, his sharing of the Gospel, his sharing of the Good News of Jesus Christ was infectious, and before long, the Franciscan order was founded under his guidance.

We here at St. Anthony are no strangers to the impact that this beautiful following of Jesus has had on our world. St. Anthony himself (one of the most popular saints in all of Italy) was a Franciscan, and was well known for his preaching and teaching. Franciscans serve the people of God around the world. They serve the poor, they serve students, they serve in healthcare, and they continually pray for the continued conversion of all.

I have been blessed with the opportunity to travel to Assisi Italy twice. It is truly an amazing site. There are big beautiful Basilicas, small neighborhood churches dating back hundreds of years, sev-eral communities of religious brothers and sisters, opportunities to pray at the tombs of great Saints such as Francis and Clare. Assisi is truly one of my most favorite places I have visited, but as great as it is, and the immeasurable impact the Franciscan order has had on our world, and continues to have, it all started with one change of heart. It started with that decision Francis made to turn towards and follow the will of his Father in heaven. May we all learn from the great Saint, and do our best to follow God’s will, and know that even when we fail, we can always turn back to him. In Christ,

Josh Schaan Pastoral Associate

That all workers may receive respect and protection of their rights, and that the

From the Filipino Commission… During the past ministry year, discussion and prayerful discern-ment between the current Filipino Commission members and Fili-pino Commission Priest Coordinator, Fr. Vic Olvida, and our Pastor, Fr. Jack, took place, to determine the appropriateness of the continuation of the Filipino Commission. It was decided that the Filipino Commission would be dissolved at the end of June 2017. A coordinating committee will be formed to ensure that the Filipino Community continues to share the richness of Filipino culture through the two important liturgical events; the celebra-tion of Simbang Gabi, and the novena and Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz. The Filipino Community will also have one fundraising event annually for the benefit of the parish. Without a doubt, you will continue to see and witness the strong active presence of the members of the Filipino Community in various ministries and activities of the parish. Our sincere thanks to those who have served on the Filipino Commission in the past and to Fr. Jack and Fr. Vic for their guidance in the discernment that lead to this deci-sion. Maraming Salamat!

October 1st -7th is Mental Health Awareness Week Did you know that nearly 1 in 5 adults in the US experience men-tal illness in a given year? That one half of all chronic mental illness begins by the age of 14; three-fourths by the age of 24? That 46% of homeless adults live with mental illness and/or sub-stance use disorder? That suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US; 3rd leading cause of death for ages 10-14 and the sec-ond leading cause of death of people ages 15-24. Our faith com-munities can be an important part of the recovery process through education, support, and by helping individuals and families feel part of a caring community. Learn more! Ministry Fair This Weekend!!! Faith, Friends, Door Prizes, and Food!

Come on over to the Parish Hall for St. Anthony Ministry Fair after all Masses this weekend, 9/30 & 10/1, to see how you can get involved with our wonderful ministries here at St. Anthony Parish.

Our Suffering Sisters and Brothers A few weeks ago, we collected for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Little did we know then that there were to be more trials to test our sisters and brothers. Hurricane Irma hit Florida and Hurricanes Jose and Maria are waiting in the Atlantic as this is written. Mexico has endured two different earthquakes in the last weeks. We will not forget the need of those who have been test-ed. Next weekend, October 7th & 8th, St. Anthony Parish will have a second collection to help send relief to those in the USA and Mexico, who have suffered from these natural disasters. The money collected will be divided and sent to Catholic Charities for the USA relief and to Catholic Relief Services for the Inter-national support. An additional $2000 will be added to each of those totals from the Parish Stewardship-Donations to Others account, to help in these disasters. Please remember to bring additional money next weekend. Thank you for continuing to give to those with great need. God Bless You!
