RETIREMENT – (Robert and Marian Lovatt)
Many of you will have heard that Marian and I are
planning to retire on 6th September 2020. We moved here
in April 2004 so we will have served for over 16 years. We
shall be hosting a Party to which you are all invited on Sat-
urday 5th September at 3:00 pm with a Service of Thanks-
giving followed by a tea in the All Saints’ Centre. I will of
course until then, continue here as vicar, to the best of my
ability.
We have come to love Eastbourne. When thinking of a new house
to live in we realised that a home with a nice garden near to the sea and
not too far from the town centre would be ideal – which is of course ex-
actly where we live now. However, after much reflection we have decid-
ed to move to Angmering near Worthing. Staying in Eastbourne, and yet
debarred from being part of All Saints’, would be just too difficult. Alt-
hough there are many other fine churches in Eastbourne, All Saints’ is our
home, and we would find it so difficult to worship in a neighbouring
church.
We are very fortunate in having a fine curate in Jon Haines, who,
along with his wife Gaby will assume more responsibility over the interreg-
num. With our readers, retired clergy and several others we shouldn’t
have any difficulty covering our services.
Although the process of choosing a new vicar cannot begin offi-

cially until after we have left, much preparation is already underway.
Archdeacon Edward will be visiting the PCC in June and the Board of Pa-
trons, under the chairmanship of Ven. Roger Combes (former Archdea-
con), is fully geared up. Bishop Martin visited the church last March and
preparations are under way to draw up a Parish Profile and Person Speci-
fication.
All Saints’ is such a great church to be part of, and, coming to live
here such an enticing prospect, I have no doubt that there will be many
applicants.
Do however, keep praying that God will have his hand on the
whole process. Marian and I, God willing, will join St. Margaret’s Church in
Angmering, which is a church very similar in many ways to All Saints’. We
have bought a property there about a year ago which is currently let out.
We have since learnt that Ben and Emily Lucas are due to start there this
June with Ben serving as curate. (Ben was formerly our Youth and Chil-
dren’s worker)
Should any of you wish to venture 40 miles westwards you would
be most welcome to visit us.

UPDATE FROM THE BELFRY— Pip Pawley
Tadpoles...... is the name given to our learner ringers! Sunday,
26th March, saw a milestone in that all eight bells were rung by a full
band of All Saints’ bell ringers, the first time this had happened for quite
some time.
Lucy, Sabi and Mark (pictured) have been learning to ring over
the past year and they are now able to ring, with confidence, on Sunday
mornings.
Following the All Saints’ Day display last November, two more
“Tadpoles” have joined the band - we welcomed Kate and Chris as they
start to learn to ring this year.
We always welcome new ringers; please speak to David Leworthy
(mob.: 07711 161024 or email: [email protected])
BELL RESTORATION FUND
We are very grateful that Becky and Colin’s concert last October
raised £521.85 for the Bell Restoration Fund which, including grants and
pledges, currently stands at £36,400. We are about half-way there! This
total has been boosted by a very generous gift-aided pledge of £2,000.
If you want to donate to the Bell Restoration Fund but give at a
later date, would you consider making a pledge? This would help us with
reaching our target. Please speak to Pip, in total confidence.

FAREWELL TO RICHARD JACKSON -
18th
January 2020 – All Saints’ Church
The body of the church was packed tight
on this bright and sunny, winter Saturday after-
noon. Possibly some 70% of the congregation
were members of the clergy and past colleagues
from throughout the diocese of Chichester. All
had come together to praise God for the privi-
lege of knowing and working with Richard Jack-
son who had served within the diocese for 25
years, progressing from curate to Bishop.
This was a service of praise and worship to our Lord for all that He
had done through Richard’s ministry. The love and friendship within the
atmosphere were palpable. The Lord was acknowl-
edged in song as matchless King and Lord of love
and peace for eternity. We praised the Lord for His
faithfulness and goodness.
‘For me to live is Christ’ was the subject of a
solo written and performed by David Churchyard
where he proclaimed that ‘Jesus is all that He said
He would be and more and more…’ and ‘if I had
nothing in all of this world, I have riches in His
name’. It was a moving and uplifting performance.
be a priority. The building had to be of good quality, honouring to our
Lord, as well as serving the needs of All Saints’ and the community.
However, after many delays and hinderances from the Diocese
and the Victorian Society, the PCC authorised a Faculty for the Centre on
9th February, 2006 at a cost of £903,317. At the time we were well short of
this amount, but we trusted God.
Then in May 2006, the church unexpectedly received a legacy of
£117,000 from the Estate of a lady who had died over 50 years earlier.
Unknown to us she had bequeathed half of her Estate to All Saints’. The
long delay in the payment of the bequest was because the finalisation of
the Will could not be concluded until a tenant had died. What perfect
timing! What a God we have! It was wonderful that the final cost of
£1,000,000 was made up by the faithful congregation of All Saints’,
Being the All Saints’ Magazine Editor for 27 years
and Churchwarden for 5 years
The second significant aspect of my time here at All Saints’ comes
in two parts. I had a 27-year tenure as Magazine Editor from 1977 - 2004
which entailed monthly deadlines and 277 editions!
I also spent 5 years as Churchwarden from 2000-2005 the same
year that Mark Ashworth started his fruitful ministry as Youth Worker.
Being a Churchwarden meant that you were legally responsible
for all the property and moveable goods belonging to a Parish Church –
a daunting task!
It is not until you become a Churchwarden that you realise how
pressurised the life of a Vicar is and how they have little time to them-
selves and their family, because they are always looking after the needs
of others.
That’s why we must remember to pray regularly for our Vicar and
his family.
The Step of Faith which resulted in the building of the
All Saints’ Centre in 2004.
The third significant event was the opening of the All Saints’ Cen-
tre on 16th June, 2007. This huge building project was approved by the
PCC in November 2001 as we needed to get to grips with the expanding
Children’s and Youth Work headed by Mark Ashworth (now an ordained
Minister at All Saints’, Crowborough). At the time we thought the costs
would be in the region of £350,000.
Under the inspired Chairmanship of Dr. John Caroe working with
Project Manager, Tony Cameron, and assisted by John Maloney and
Keith Adams, the project developed. There would be an upstairs Youth
Hall, a larger and better equipped kitchen, and Disabled Access had to
Bishop Richard spoke from He-
brews 11, bringing out that we can have
joy and peace only when we have con-
fidence in the gospel of Jesus Christ and
not in our own ability or ideas. To those
who felt they lacked competence, Je-
sus said that the words would be given
when the occasion arose. We do not
need competence, only courage
gained by being in fellowship with the Lord. He urged we have confi-
dence in the gospel and courage to live it out.
The interaction between Bishop Martin and
Bishop Richard was evident of the understanding
that had grown up between them. Martin spoke of
the obvious differences between them, from
height and size, to methods of travel. He said that
Richard was a luncheon man while he preferred
afternoon tea, but he stressed how valuable it had
been working with Richard and how much he had
learned from him.
He presented Rich-
ard with a gift from the
diocese and acknowl-
edged the work and sup-
port from Richard’s wife,
Deborah, and presented
her with a bouquet of
flowers.
After the blessing, there was an adjournment into the Centre
where a cream tea was provided and enjoyed by over 200 people. Fel-
lowship and conversation continued until half past five.
A moment of contemplation ? ….
.… and a moment of praise!
LOOKING BACK OVER 45 YEARS – Robin Weldon
Choosing three significant as-
pects of my life at All Saints’ during
the last 45 years to write about, has
been a difficult task, as much has
happened! However, here are the
ones which, to me, are the most signif-
icant.
The Centenary of the Church in June
1979
In April 1978 the Vicar, Rev.
Peter Renouf, announced he was
leaving All Saints’ to become Rector of Farnborough Parish Church and,
in his own jovial way, said to me “Robin, you don’t mind chairing the Cen-
tenary Committee and organising the Centenary Celebrations, do you?”.
What a daunting task but I enjoyed being given a ‘free rein’ as I
was ‘the Committee’! And what a week of celebrations we had!
Speakers during the week included the Rev. Dick Lucas (Rector of St.
Helen’s, Bishopsgate), Rev. Michael Baughen (Rector of All Souls’, Lang-
ham Place). Rev. George Duncan (a famous Keswick Speaker), Rev. Pe-
ter Ball (Bishop of Lewes), past Vicars and Curates. Musical entertainment
included The Interlude Singers, Betty Lou Mills, Garth Hewitt, Victoria
Men’s Choir and the Salvation Army.
By the time the new Vicar Rev. Gordon Rideout arrived and was
instituted on 23rd February 1979, the whole programme was complete. I
remember on that evening an unexpected lighting failure in the Chancel
added a touch of drama to the solemnity of the first part of the Service!
I realise that most of the names mentioned above may mean
nothing to the younger members of the congregation, but way back in
1978/9 they were well known people.
The Centenary Service on June 11th was very significant as our MP
Ian Gow (PPS to the Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher), read one of the
Lessons. Sadly, 11 years later he was assassinated by the Provisional IRA -
just hours before he was due to visit my office in Eastbourne.
