ALL SAINTS’ EPISCOPAL CHURCH – TUPELO, MISSISSIPPI INTERIM ORGANIST/CHOIRMASTER POSITION

Introduction to All Saints’ Episcopal Church – Tupelo All Saints’ Episcopal Church is one of the Diocese of Mississippi’s most dynamic congregations as is more completely explained in the Parish Profile. While the church today is home to approximately 400 communicants, we trace our beginnings back to 1870, the same year that Tupelo was founded. Both the nave and educational, music and parish hall facilities are relatively new having been completed in 1992 and 2007, respectively. The nave has excellent acoustics and is home to a M. P. Moller Organ (Op. 8496 1952, 1981) revised by Gregory Koziel in 2011 with Walker Digital Additions. The new facilities include a roomy choir room with music library storage, women’s and men’s vesting rooms and office.

The attached Parish Profile, drafted to familiarize potential candidates for the Rector search, currently nearing completion, offers an in depth exploration of the breadth and scope of parish life. The Interim Organist/Choirmaster will work in concert with the Rector as the Rector’s principal liturgical assistant (or, until a Rector is selected, with the Senior Warden). The job description for the full time Organist/Choirmaster, Assistant for Liturgy & Music reveals the opportunities for the Rector and Organist/Choirmaster to work in concert. Job Description – Interim Organist/Choirmaster & Assistant for Liturgy & Music All Saints’ goal for the Interim Organist/Choirmaster is that, through music, he or she will enrich the liturgical life of the parish and its communicants. Ideally, the Interim Organist/Choirmaster, along with the Rector (when selected), will play Sunday and special services’ liturgies, serve as organist at these services, rehearse with and direct the choir on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings, and direct and conduct a children’s choir program. In addition, the Interim Organist/Choirmaster will have other responsibilities that include administrative meetings, budgetary obligations, organ maintenance arrangements and substitute organist procurement. If, however, an applicant resides nearby (within 150 or so miles of Tupelo), All Saints’ retains the option to work with the applicant for an abbreviated number of work hours and on site duties. For example, an approved candidate could work with All Saints’ to schedule organ and choir rehearsals on Sundays and special occasions (funerals, weddings, Lessons & Carols, and Christmas and Easter services). Salary requirements would then be based upon hours, travel time and needed overnight accommodations. All Saints’ Music Programs’ Strengths and Opportunities The strength of All Saints’ music program stems from its history of having talented music directors and the parish’s appreciation for choral music. The music program is supported by the strong foundation of a vibrant parish community that supports the Saints’ Brew program (a

weekday breakfast program serving the homeless and food insecure downtown population), its partnership with Christ the King Lutheran Church, its strong youth program, parish Care Teams, its strong Deacon, Postulant for the Diaconate and Verger personnel and its growing Education for Ministry program. Primary strengths include:

A number of choir members are trained musicians, both vocally and instrumentally (though unfortunately, none trained on the keyboard or organ). Of particular importance, in addition to the wonderful organ, All Saints’ previous music directors, including Ellen Johnston and Jessica Nelson, have accumulated a fine music library of both choral and orchestral music.

Our parish believes there is a strong the opportunity for parish and the music program’s growth offered by the Episcopal church’s unique liturgy (All Saints’ is the only Episcopal church in Tupelo). Not having an Organist/Choirmaster since early July has only deepened the parish’s appreciation and recognition of the need for an Interim (and ultimately permanent) Organist/Choirmaster. Interim Organist/Choirmaster Salary Estimates All Saints’ will base the Interim Organist/Choirmaster’s salary package upon the Association of Anglican Musicians’ Salary Guide for Musicians Employed by Religious Institutions (updated December 31, 2016) that provides advice regarding salary information based upon the candidate’s educational background, years of experience and weekly work hours. We also anticipate that a candidate living in Tupelo may need supplementary income from teaching, either privately or at a local community college or university.
