BRIEF STRATEGIC TREATMENT FOR ANXIETY DISORDERS WITH ADULTS AND ADOLESCENTSwith REID WILSON, Ph.D., author of Don’t Panic: Taking Control of Anxiety Attacks
Caboto Centre, Maura Hall 1055 Wilkes Avenues 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
WI N N I PEG | November 21 & 22, 2011 (Monday & Tuesday)
Anxiety disorders manipulate people by injecting rules into consciousness, then using that set of laws to take over mental territory.
Five anxiety disorders— phobias, panic, social anxiety, generalized anxiety and OCD— control people by generating an absolute standard for certainty and comfort. We will look at the common denominators of this intrusion, and isolate its manifestations in each disorder. Then we will explore how therapists can teach adults and adolescents to gain ground by engineering their own tactics and strategies. This brief strategic approach to cognitive-behavioral therapy helps adults and adolescents nd the courage and motivation to challenge their old beliefs and attitudes. Practical methods enable adults and adolescents to ignore the content of their obsessive worries and to explore the
feeling of uncertainty rather than eeing from it. The cutting-edge anxiety treatment is now pushing further into the confrontational. You will learn how to help adults and adolescents purposely to seek out anxiety as their ticket to freedom from crippling fear.
We will begin by covering the essential genetic and developmental themes that lead teenagers and adults to struggle with anxiety. Then we will address the unique attributes of worry and the problems of and treatment for all the major anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety and speci c phobias. You will learn a persuasive strategy—built out of whole cloth within the rst session—that will frame the entire treatment protocol. We will focus on three targets of treatment: the physiological, the cognitive, and the frame of reference. By the end of the day we will elaborate on the therapist skills for two speci c disorders: panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive
disorder. For panic disorder, you will learn how to divide and conquer: to interrupt anticipatory anxiety and then to manage physical symptoms using cognitive strategies, paradox, pattern disruption, exposure and interoceptive exposure, and peeling away their ever-present “safety crutches.” For OCD adults and adolescents, persuading them to adopt a new frame of reference is the therapist's primary task. You will learn a persuasive strategy--built out of whole cloth within the rst session-- that will frame the entire treatment protocol.

WHY GENDER MATTERS IN EDUCATING BOYS & GIRLS: CONCRETE STRATEGIES TO BOOST ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTwith LEONARD SAX, M.D., Ph.D., author of Why Gender Matters, Boys Adrift, and Girls on the Edge
Garrick Theatre, Venue 1, 330 Garry Street9:00 am – 4:30 pm
WI N N I PEG | December 5 , 2011 (Monday)
You work with kids for a reason— you want to help them learn, grow and succeed. This workshop will give you a fresh perspective on student behavior and the contrast in how boys and girls learn.
In the author’s own words: Most enduring cultures of which we have any record have a process for transition to a gendered adulthood. In this process, children learn what it means to be female or male in that society. Most Canadian parents ignore it.
Indeed Canadian parents seldom speak to their children at all about the meaning of womanhood or manhood (as opposed to generic, un-gendered adulthood). Most parents today don’t know what to say. But girls and young women still want to know, “What does it mean to be a woman?” Boys and young men still want to know, “What does it mean to be a man?” We don’t tell them. As a result, the marketplace lls the vacuum, providing “the ready-made masculine and the ready-made feminine” which are caricatures of the real thing; but young people don’t recognize them as
caricatures, because they have received no guidance. The result is a growing proportion of girls (and young women) who are anxious, depressed, and tired; they can tell you a great deal about what they do but not so much about who they are. Likewise, we nd a growing proportion of boys (and young men) who are disengaged not only from school but from the real world. They are comfortable in the virtual world, where they play their online video games, and/or surf the net for photographs of girls or young women.

More on presenter: www.leonardsax.com
✓ DO girls and boys really learn di erently? Is that question even meaningful, given the wide variation among girls and among boys?
✓ HOW can we customize our teaching to be gender speci c without reinforcing gender stereotypes?
✓ WHAT are some practical strategies to boost academic achievement for students in subjects like English, French language, arts and creative writing?
✓ WHAT can we do to prevent girl-on-girl bullying, including cyber bullying?
✓ HOW do we motivate boys to care more about learning?
✓ WHAT can we do to cut down on discipline referrals and get every student on board?
✓ WHAT racial and cultural-
characteristics need greater understanding to successfully implement these strategies for girls and boys?
✓ HOW to engage and motivate girls in subjects like computer programming, robotics, and natural sciences.
✓ HOW best to evaluate and intervene with the student who is not paying attention?
✓ HOW to distinguish true ADHD from other causes of inattention?
✓ WHEN evaluating the student who is not doing well in school to distinguish a strictly cognitive de cit from a motivational de cit – in other words, is this a student who cannot learn without accommodation, or is this a student who doesn’t want to learn because he thinks school is stupid, or boring, or both? And how to remedy a motivational de cit?
CONSIDER THESE THOUGHTPROVOKING WORKSHOP TOPICS:
✓ HOW much time spent playing video games is too much?
✓ WHICH video games are ok?
✓ WHAT is the story with Facebook? Should I be my daughter’s Facebook friend?
✓ SHOULD I be concerned? My child sends or receives more than 4,000 text messages a day
✓ TRUE or not? the more time a girl spends on Facebook, the more likely she is to become anxious or depressed. And if so, why isn’t it true for boys as well?
ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP AND LEARN:
The teachers found Dr. Sax’s seminar interesting and thought-provoking. Dr. Sax’s evening presentation to the parents had an even more profound impact. His content goes far beyond gender di erences to deep questions about the directions our society is taking.”
