Then, Write-N-Cite will create your in-text citations and your bibliography (based on your citation placeholders) and add it to your paper! Write-N-Cite requires you to download a small (free) program that provides access to an abbreviated version of your RefWorks account while you are working in MS Word. You won't be able to add, edit or delete references, but you will be able to search, view and cite them. If your campus network won't allow you to download and install programs, use One Line/Cite View to generate a bibliography. There are three versions of Write-N-Cite available: - a version used on the Mac - version 2 for Windows - version III for Windows which uses a single document, works with MS VISTA and Word 2007 and allows for working offline. This tutorial covers Using Write-N-Cite III. Slide 2 Text Captions: The first thing you'll need to do is download Write-N-Cite III to your PC. Slide 11 Text Captions: During the installation process, you'll need to select the Allow Working Offline option if you wish to use Write-N-Cite III without being connected to the internet. This option is disabled by default and you cannot include the offline feature once the plug-in is installed (without re-installing it).

Slide 13 Text Captions: If you are on-site, you'll be brought directly to your Organization's login page. If you are off-site, you'll be prompted to enter your group code first (users logging in through a proxy server will need a special configuration. Check with your local RefWorks Administrator for this information). Log in to Write-N-Cite with your RefWorks login name and password.

Slide 14 Text Captions: You can select Always on Top if you want Write-N-Cite to always display over Microsoft Word. If you have a draft document started with Write-N-Cite v.2, you will need to first convert it to a Write-N-Cite III document from the Tools area (if you are starting a new paper, you do not have to convert anything -- just start typing your document).

Slide 15 Text Captions: To convert an older version 2 draft document, select Convert to Write-N-Cite III Document (remember, this is for draft documents with the temporary citation placeholders created using Write-N-Cite v.2 -- not for formatted documents).

Slide 16 Text Captions: Once you've converted your document (which we are not going to demonstrate), or if you don't have a document to convert, you are ready to start using Write-N-Cite III.

Slide 70 Text Captions: The formatted bibliography and in-text citations have been updated. Let's take a quick look at how you can use Write-N-Cite III to work offline...

Slide 71 Text Captions: In order to work offline, you must first download your RefWorks database to your computer. Anytime you make changes to your RefWorks account, you will want to download a new update for offline use. RefWorks does not automatically send changes to your offline version of Write-N-Cite. Select Tools, Create/Update Offline Database to download your references.

Text Captions: Isn't that great?

Also, RefWorks "remembers" how you last used Write-N-Cite. So, if you close out of it and re-open it later -- Write-N-Cite will open in offline mode. Simply uncheck the Work Offline option to be connected online. There are a few other features in the Tools area you should know about...

Slide 87 Text Captions: Display Unformatted Citations takes your formatted paper and "unformats" it. It removes the bibliography and turns the formatted in-text citations back into temporary citation placeholders. Revert to WNC v.2 Document converts a Write-N-Cite III document to an unformatted version 2 document. This allows you to share it with Mac users or users who still use Write-N-Cite v.2. Remove Field Codes takes out all the Write-N-Cite III coding from your formatted paper (which you cannot see, but is in your Word document). This option converts your paper to plain or static text. Once you remove the field codes you can no longer format your paper.

Slide 88 If you want to learn another way to include citation placeholders or if you're a Firefox or Linux user, close this module and click on Using One Line/Cite View from the menu.
