A special gift (an artist sketch of a portrait of Susan) was given to the Wohlitz family as a memoir of their daughter Susan. 2009 Spring Career Day2009 Spring Career Day2009 Spring Career Day2009 Spring Career Day2009 Spring Career Day

A Career Day like no other, i design, the theme for the 2009IIDA/ASID Student Career Day, broke the mold for thetraditional classroom style event. Every year committeemembers from both IIDA and ASID combine efforts to puttogether an exhilarating and educational day for InteriorDesign students across the state. This year when thecommittee assembled and began brainstorming on the typeof event they wanted to arrange for the students a clear themedeveloped; one that would focus on not only providing thestudents with knowledge and information on the skills theywill need to acquire a job in this tough market, but that thisday should afford them the opportunity to put their newlyacquired skills to practice.

i design kicked the day off with the Emmy nominated keynotespeaker Debra Schmidt who’s talk on “The Power ofPossibility Thinking” had students passing along high-fives by the end of her verymotivating talk. Student feedback said she was, “Wonderful and very captivating!” and“Outstanding!”

The day progressed with a tag-team approach thatincluded an interactive lesson on Networking 101,presented by Heather Turner of MSI Generalfollowed up with a vendor fair, which was widelysupported by a number of schools and anoutstanding amount of industry partners. The vendorfair was an opportunity for the students to put topractice their newly learned networking skills. Aspecial thanks to all of those who partnered with theplanning committee to bring success to this part ofthe day.

The afternoon began with the choice to attend one of three break-out sessions: StickleyFurniture as presented by Mike Danial, Stickley Furniture Corporate Historian;Visualization by UW Madison Associate Professor Mark Nelson; and Portfolio PanelDiscussion consisting of Bill Beaudreau of CRB Interiors, Patricia McGinnis of PotterLawson and Tina Hopwood of Flad Architects.

Professionalism does not just come across in the skills onepossesses but in the way one dresses and presents themselves. To provide the students with an enthusiastic and visualapproach to professional dresss, professional and studentmodels along with a PowerPoint presentation and music wereled by the colorful guidance of Jenny Rebholz, FreelanceWriter and Marketing Coordinator. To round out the fun forthe day Comedy Sportz entertained the students withimpromptu skits illustrating appropriate and non-appropriateways to act professional.

Amy, who is the Resource Librarian at Erdman, adesign-build firm, was featured for her recent work on the new Resource Center forErdman’s new headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin.

Erdman is a design-build firm that concentrates on healthcare design. The article explainedAmy’s challenge to combine twenty-some separate resource libraries from architects, interior designers, engineers and construction staff. In addition, her responsibility alsoincluded a huge clean up of all resource materials that were no longer needed. Amy wasable to accomplish much of this without much waste – donating, recycling and returningto vendors much of the unneeded materials Erdman had accumulated.

To read the full article, please access Interiors & Sources Magazine website atwww.isdesignet.com.

If you or other IIDA members have recently been featured in a publication and would liketo share it with our IIDA WI membership, please send your information [email protected].

CLC in the Windy CityCLC in the Windy CityCLC in the Windy CityCLC in the Windy CityCLC in the Windy City

So what is CLC? Chapter LeadershipCouncil is a two dayevent hosted andpresented by IIDAheadquarters staff andIIDA international boardmembers that provideyour chapter’s leadersopportunity to learn, communicate, networkand get excited about theAssociation and being aleader. The event is held bi-annually, with the most recent onebeing held in early February at IIDA’s headquarters in Chicago, IL.

Anywhere we look we see evidence of a troubled economy. It’s notbusiness, it’s personal. We all feel it. Recognizing this, CLCpresented ideas of what the Association, your chapter leaders andyou the members could do to survive unemployment and otherstruggles specific to these times. Whether it was program creation, membership and volunteer retention and growth, communicationand involvement of students, The Foundation, an IIDA brandedNCIDQ study course, how to gain chapter sponsorship, Forumsand areas of specialization, Government and Regulatory Affairsand licensing issues, finances of the Association and chapters,NCIDQ’S IDEP program or branding, marketing andcommunication, a common thread wove its way through each topic. The economy and the struggles we face are no reason for us tostop what we are doing, we just need to change some of the waysin which we are doing them. Now is not a time to reduce the valueof the membership and be worried, but to focus on our strengthsand come together as a strong backbone for the industry. Desperatetimes call for new ideas and creativity and we return to your chapterwith many ideas. We were challenged… “Do we have the resolveto turn away from ‘the way we have always done it’ way of thinkingand try something new?”. After all, WE are the future of design.

Great ideas were shared and discussed, the detailsof which are too numerous to mention here. Ifyou are interested in learning more please contactAshley Wagner, IIDA [email protected] Laura Quinn, IIDA [email protected] . Theywould be happy to share more information aboutCLC or to share a copy of the CLC minutes.

IIDA Wisconsin Chapter would like to thank you,the members, for allowing us to represent you atCLC this year. In addition, we would like to thankKimball and whitespace.bz for sponsoring the twosocial/networking events.
