Recreation Restart Survey | Results
PROJECT NAMEWest Vancouver Recreation Restart Survey
SURVEY DATESMay 26 to June 7, 2020
Following the Province’s announcement about BC’s Restart Plan, the District of West Vancouver held a public survey, called the Recreation Restart Survey, to gauge the community’s interest and readiness to participate in recreation and cultural programs, services, and facilities.
The Recreation Restart Survey was available online at westvancouverITE.ca from May 26, 2020 to June 7, 2020. Notice of the survey was sent to recent program registrants and pass holders, and promoted through e-newsletters and social media. The survey received a record level of participa-tion with a total of 3,442 responses, including 2,394 (70.2%) responses from West Vancouver res-idents. In addition, 1,513 (44.8%) respondents have children aged 0-18 years old, and 985 (28.9%) respondents were members of the Seniors’ Activity Centre.
Overall, the results of the survey show significant support to participate in District recreation and cultural programs with physical distancing and enhanced safety protocols in place. Below is a sum-mary of some of the high-level findings from the survey:
• 2,113 (62.1%) people indicated that they are likely to register and participate in recreation programs held outdoors, with 2,281 (67.6%) respondents indicating that they would feel comfortable participating in programs held outdoors right away or in the summer.
• If held outdoors, the programs with the most interest include Group Fitness (930), Yoga (854) and Swimming (668).
• 1,949 (57.4%) people indicated that they are likely to register and participate in recreation programs held indoors, with1,725 (50.7%) indicating that they would feel comfortable participating in programs held indoors right away or in the summer. Another 550 (16.2%) indicated they would be comfortable in the fall.
• If held indoors, the programs with the most interest include Swimming (897), Fitness Centre (810), Yoga (623) and Rehabilitation (623).
• 702 (20.6%) people indicated that they are likely to register and participate in online/virtu-al recreation and cultural programs.
• The online/virtual programs with the most interest include Yoga (569), Group Fitness (493) and Dance (267).
• Of the 1,513 participants with children: » 1,034 (69.5%) indicated that they are likely to register their children in recreation pro-
grams held outdoors, with 984 (66%) indicating that they would feel comfortable with their children participating in programs held outdoors right away or in the summer.
» If held outdoors, the programs with the most interest include Swimming (536), Day Camps (508) and Gymnastics (501).
» 779 (52.2%) indicated that they are likely to register their children in recreation pro-grams held indoors, with 937 (62.9%) indicating that they would be comfortable with their children participating in programs held indoors right away or in the summer. Anoth-er 150 (10.1%) indicated they would be comfortable with their children participating in the fall.
Recreation Restart Survey | Executive Summary
» If held indoors, the programs with the most interest include Swimming (609), Gymnas-tics (434), and Day Camps (313).
» 287 (19.2%) indicated that they are likely to register their children in online/virtual rec-reation and cultural programs.
» The online/virtual programs with the most interest include Dance (188), Music (176) and Gymnastics (161).
• Of the 985 Seniors’ Activity Centre (SAC) members:
» The outdoor programs with the most interest include Walking (207), Hiking 174), and Cycling (146).
» The indoor programs with the most interest include Group Fitness (164), Yoga (146), and Better Balance (111).
» The online/virtual programs with the most interest include Yoga (134), Group Fitness (132) and Learning Lectures (90)
» 194 (19.7%) indicated that they would be comfortable accessing the SAC Shuttle Bus Service right away or this summer, with another 79 (8.0%) indicating they would be comfortable this fall.
» 371 (37.7%) indicated that they would be comfortable accessing the SAC Cafeteria Food Service right away or this summer, with another 150 (15.2%) indicating they would be comfortable this fall.
» 152 (15.4%) indicated that they would be comfortable filling SAC Volunteer Service roles right away or this summer, with another 77 (7.8%) indicating they would be com-fortable this fall.
While the results of the survey show significant support for the restart of many District recreation and cultural programs, services, and facilities, public demand is only one of the criteria that the District must consider in planning the restart of services that were closed as a result of the pan-demic. The first and most important factor when considering restarting any service is the safety of residents, staff and volunteers. If safety considerations can be met, regulatory requirements, labour requirements and financial viability must be considered next. Public demand is considered after these requirements have been met. As a result, non-essential operations and programs may not be resumed if they can not be done so safely or are not financially viable.
The District of West Vancouver is working to safely restart facilities and services in a phased approach. A phased approach means that not all facilities and services will reopen right away, but rather that operations will resume as they are able to do so safely and responsibly within the new reality created by the pandemic.
