What's New?

Kingston East Community Centre

On December 11, 2019, the City broke ground on the new Kingston East Community Centre project to be located at the corner of Highway 15 and Grenadier Drive. The new approximately 20,000 sq.ft. facility, scheduled for completion late 2021, will feature a full size gymnasium, ftness centre, EarlyOn program space, multi-purpose rooms and a community teaching kitchen as well as a splash pad, funded by the Pittsburgh Community Beneft Fund. Inclusion & special-needs services The City welcomes and encourages all residents to participate in our recreation programs and services. Every effort is made to ensure programs are accessible and inclusive.

Summer Camps A limited number of student-integration staff are available on a frst-come, frst-serve basis to enhance the experience of children in our camp programs. The level of personal care they are able to provide is limited.

Behaviour-management strategies and procedures will be reviewed prior to the start of the program and we will do our utmost to accommodate your child’s needs. Should the needs exceed our ability to accommodate (i.e. personal care, safety concerns), we welcome and encourage the participant to bring their own support to the program. Children attending camp who endanger themselves or others, or who compromise the camp experience for other campers, may be removed from the program at the supervisor’s discretion.

Before Registering Contact us early to discuss the suitability of the program you are considering, any special requirements, support options, availability, and to review the Adapted Integration Form.

Call 613-546-4291 ext. 1706 or email [email protected]

Don’t Wait – Register Early We require the Adapted Integration Form to be submitted a minimum of three weeks prior to the summer program’s start-date to allow adequate time to assess and determine if any program modifcations are required and if your program support request can be accommodated. Download the form at CityofKingston.ca/PLAY

NOTE: Ratio enhancement is not available for Camp Extended Supervision.

Summer camps Choosing the Right Camp City camps are all about learning, laughing, playing and having fun! Make sure the camp you choose matches your child’s interests and maturity. Your child’s safety and enjoyment are always our top priority. Staff

Our day camp leaders have demonstrated leadership skills and experience working with children. We carefully select the best applicants based on their creativity, enthusiasm and experience. Camp leaders possess High Five training in the principles of healthy childhood development. (HighFive.org)

All camp leaders are certifed in First Aid/CPR and are National Lifeguard-certifed where required. Our extensive pre-camp training includes child management and development, program planning, risk management and hands-on programming sessions.

Supervision All camps have an on-site supervisor/senior leader responsible for supervision of staff, participants and programming. Our maximum staff-to-participant ratio is one leader to 10 participants. Ratios are generally lower as leaders-in-training and volunteers further reduce these numbers.

Age Requirements Campers must be the required age by the last day of the program.

Extended Hours This service is available for an additional cost at specifed programs and locations from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Bus Service Grass Creek Camp only: Busing is available to Grass Creek Camp (limited pick-up locations) for an additional fee. Camp leaders ride on the bus with your children. See Grass Creek Camp information on page 14.

Lunches and Snacks City camps are nut-free. Lunches are supervised at full-day programs. Please ensure your child has morning and afternoon snacks, a lunch and drinks. No nut products are permitted at camp. We encourage campers to pack litter-free lunches. Reusable containers help reduce the impact on the environment.

What to Bring Campers should bring the following each day: a large lunch, two snacks, a water bottle and other drinks, sunscreen, a bathing suit, a towel and a hat. Label all belongings with your child’s full name. Leave toys, electronic devices and other valuables at home.

Severe Allergies, Inhalers and Medical Conditions When registering your child, provide relevant medical information. If your child has a severe allergy that results in severe symptoms, or has a medical condition that may require the emergency administration of medication, please download and complete the Medication Administration and Anaphylaxis Emergency Plan forms at

CityofKingston.ca/PLAY

This information is provided to recreation staff and shared with your child’s leaders as appropriate. Parents must specify if they wish to have staff carry and/or administer their child’s medication, or if the child will do so him/herself. If your child takes any prescription medication the camp supervisor can arrange to store the medication in a secure manner and will remind your child when it is time for administration. We cannot store or administer any non-prescription medication.

Sunscreen All camps schedule regular sunscreen-application breaks throughout the day. Camp staff will remind every camper to apply and reapply sunscreen approximately every 90 minutes. Staff will not apply sunscreen directly to campers unless parents request that they do so in writing either during registration or through completing a sunscreen application permission form.

Behaviour Expectations Children are expected to listen to and respect staff and other campers.

Some children may require additional integration support to meet these expectations or to overcome other barriers to their participation. If you feel your child may require integration support to enjoy their experience in a camp program, please contact our integration coordinator, Caroline ([email protected]), in advance of registering, to ask about the availability of integration staff.

Campers who endanger themselves or others, or who compromise the camp experience of other campers, may be removed from the program at the program supervisor’s discretion.

Holidays Camps do not operate on statutory holidays (there is no camp on July 1 or Aug 3).

Swimming Where swimming is available, certifed National Lifeguards supervise your children.

Mind & Body Workshop – Yoga for Core and Pelvic Wellness Your pelvic foor occupies a large part of your torso, and plays a big role in digestion, urination and sexual functioning. When the pelvic foor muscles are not working in an optimal way, low back or hip pain, prolapse, diastasis or incontinence (in addition to other problems) can result. Contrary to popular belief, these issues are not a natural result of pregnancy, childbirth or aging, and they are treatable. This workshop will empower participants to understand their pelvic foor anatomy, how it works and common issues that arise. Yoga, along with pelvic foor physiotherapy, is an effective way to address pelvic foor health concerns. Participants will learn breath, movement and awareness techniques to support healthy pelvic foor functioning. No yoga experience is required to attend this. NOTE: Bring your own yoga mat. Falls Prevention Starts With You Workshop Trained KFL&A ambassadors share evidence-based information on falls prevention with older adults in KFL&A. We continue to promote this program because we know that there is an increased risk of falls as we age. One in three older adults over the age of 65, and one in two over the age of 80, will have a fall each year. Most falls cause broken or fractured bones and increase the need for caregiver support and add pressure to the health care system. The good news is that most falls are predictable and preventable. This is an important message for people to understand. Whether people are looking after aging parents or want to be proactive and prevent themselves from falling, they will beneft from this 60 minute presentation.

When to Register? Spring and summer swim lesson registration begins March 26 at 6 p.m.

Go to CityofKingston.ca/PLAY

What Level Should I Be In? There are a few options to assist you in fnding the right level: • On-site registration – show staff

your child’s previous progress report with the swim instructor’s recommendation.

• Let us assess your child’s swim level during a Family or Leisure Swim

• Review the swim level descriptions on pages 51, 56 and 62.

• Call us at 613-546-4291 ext. 1719/1722.

Private Swim Lessons Red Cross learn-to-swim levels are available for private or semi-private lessons for all ages. Private lessons might be right for you to develop swimming skills through personalized coaching or if your child has accomplished all but a few skills in a level. One-on-one instruction may be tailored to meet the needs of individuals with special needs in a fun learning environment.

Semi Private Swim Lessons For semi-private lessons, participants should be at the same level or within one level for skills. Please register one participant in a private lesson slot to reserve your spot, and then call 613-546-4291 ext. 1700 to modify the lesson to semi-private. Semi-private lessons cost $159.00 per participant.

Wait Lists Work! Adding your name to a wait list allows us to create new classes when possible and to notify you when spaces become available.

Watching Swimming Lessons Caregivers are encouraged to stay and watch their child’s swimming lessons from the lobby area or pool deck. POOL DECK SEATING: Please sit along the North wall to avoid blocking the pool view from the lobby. NOTE: Outdoor footwear, beverages, food and cell phones are not allowed on the pool deck.

Cell Phone & Electronics Policy The use of electronic recording devices capable of rendering a photograph or video are prohibited in the ftness rooms, change rooms, pool decks and washrooms in all City facilities.

What to Expect from Lessons The Red Cross swim program allows students to progress comfortably and have tailored programs for their specifed age groups. Have realistic expectations so participants do not feel pressured to pass a level or get a badge. The City does not allow age overrides for swim programs.

Progress Reports Progress reports are issued on the last day of lessons. Participants must complete all items on the progress report to move to the next level. Mid-term progress reports are provided verbally.

Help Prevent Pool Closures 1) Refrain from eating large meals

or feeding children immediately prior to entering the pool.

2) Always visit the washroom before entering the pool.
