Angus has many USA connections

The Declaration of Arbroath is believed by many to haveinspired Thomas Jefferson when he was penning the AmericanDeclaration of Independence

Thomas Moonlight was a farmer’s son from Arbroath who ranaway to sea at 13, fought for the Unionists in the American CivilWar, was the commander of Fort Laramie, brought peace toDodge City and was elected Governor of Wyoming – at whichpoint, he pardoned the Sundance Kid.

James Maiden, a Carnoustie-born-and-bred golf professionalwho was widely known as Kiltie, taught Bobby Jones, one of theworld’s greatest golfers, how to play and was his mentorthroughout his career.

In the 18th century, Dundee and Montrose were regulardeparture points for people sailing to a new life in the newworld, hence the many family connections between Angus andAmerica.

The family home of the Davidsons who co-founded HarleyDavidson is a cottage in the hamlet of Aberlemno, near Brechin,which has been restored to show how it would have lookedwhen the Davidson’s left for America in the 1850s.

Arbroath was the birthplace of David Buick, founder of BuickMotorcars.

In the early 20th century, a great number of young golfersfrom Carnoustie emigrated to the USA, where they made amassive contribution to the game, either by founding golf clubs,designing golf courses or becoming golf professionals. In fact,between 1898 and 1930, over 150 professional club posts in theUSA were held by Carnoustie expatriates.

After moving to the USA at the start of the 20th century, thefive Smith brothers from Carnoustie won almost every major golftournament, with Willie Smith winning one US Open and AlexSmith winning two. The achievements of the Smith Brothers arecurrently highlighted at an exhibition at Carnoustie Golf Club.

Top American golfer Francis Ouimet became famous when hewon the 1913 US Open and later revealed that his success wasdue to an Angus golf professional. "Whatever progress I havemade in golf, I owe to Charles Burgess from Montrose,” he said.

Tom Watson played his first ever shot on a links course atMonifieth Medal in 1975 – and went on to win The Open atnearby Carnoustie.

Golf has been played at Montrose links for over 455 years. In1562, a Montrose schoolboy, James Melvill, wrote in his diarythat he’d been taught how to use ‘the glub for goff’ onMontrose Links by his school master.

Apparently, Carnoustie’s first golfer was Sir Robert Maule, the15th century Sheriff of Angus, a man with a ‘colourful’reputation who is alleged to have started the tradition of thelosing golfer buying a round of drinks!

Carnoustie Ladies Golf Club is the oldest existing ladies golf clubin the world and originally had its own course, where gentswere only allowed to play if accompanied by a lady golfer!

Simpsons in Carnoustie is the second oldest golf shop in theworld and was established in 1883 by renowned club maker,ball maker, course designer, tutor and professional golfer,Robert Simpson.

Old Tom Morris made his mark on our golfing landscape – asdid James Braid and Willie Park Jnr. Between them, the threegolfing greats designed or redesigned many of the CarnoustieCountry courses, including Carnoustie Championship, Forfarand Kirriemuir.

Blairgowrie Rosemount was designed by James Braid, whowas heavily influenced by Dr Alistair McKenzie, the renownedarchitect of the Augusta National.

Robert D Pryde was one of the of the USA’s most highly-esteemed golf course designers and golf coaches – and thefirst course he ever played was Carnoustie Country’s Scotscraigin Tayport, the Fife town where he grew up.

Ben Hogan’s only appearance in The Open was at Carnoustiein 1953 – and he prepared for his first links tournament byplaying over and over again at nearby Panmure. Practice didindeed make perfect and Ben won the 1953 Open.

One of the most memorable Open moments happened atCarnoustie in 1999, when France’s Van de Velde lost a 10-point lead in the 18th hole of the final round, handing victoryto Scotland’s Paul Lawrie.

The 2018 Open will be the eighth held at CarnoustieChampionship – the first was held in 1926.

Carnoustie Country is the area's golf destinationmarketing campaign and comprises 34 golf coursesall within an hour's drive. It stretches from the glensof Angus and Perthshire to the rugged beauty ofScotland's east coast.

It is a place where golf has been played for morethan 450 years and where golfers seekingadventure embrace the challenge of links, take agentle stroll through stunning parkland and indulgein the beauty of heathland courses.

Fred Brand went to Pittsburgh in 1904 andsoon the area had a great number ofprofessionals, club makers and greenkeepers in what was known as theCarnoustie Exodus.

Clarence Hackney professional at theAtlantic City Country Club – emigrated in1913; became a US citizen in 1921.

Harry Hampton born Montrose 1889,emigrated 1910. In 1921 he was picked toplay for the US in the InternationalChallenge at Gleneagles, but pulled outprobably as he was not yet an Americancitizen.

Stewart Maiden headed to America, wherehe taught the legendary Bobby Jones wholater said “The best luck I ever had in golfwas when Stewart Maiden came fromCarnoustie to be professional at the EastLake Club (in Atlanta).”

Peter Robertson went to Oakmont andplayed in 7 US Opens during his time there.

Smith family Willie (1899) and Alex (1906& 1910) both won the US Open after goingto America. Their brother MacDonald wasbeaten in a playoff.

John Smith oversaw construction of DiabloCountry Club near San Francisco (opened1914).

PGA of America when formed in 1916almost half of the 82 members were fromCarnoustie.

Hospitalfield House – a spectacular gothicmansion which has continued its original 19thcentury purpose as a meeting place for the world’sgreatest writers, artists and thinkers and is now arenowned arts centre.

Bell Rock Lighthouse – one of the seven wondersof the Industrial World, the Bell Rock Lighthousehas been warning shipping of the dangerous reef itstands upon for over 200 years.

The Catheruns – the remains of two hill fortsdating back to the first millennium BC.

Brechin Cathedral’s Round Tower – one of onlytwo in Scotland, the Round Tower was built in1012 and is 25 metres tall.

Edzell Castle - once the stronghold of the powerfulLindsay family, the castle was regularly visited byScotland’s royalty, including Mary Queen of Scots,and, although now a ruin, its stunning 17th centurygardens have survived the test of time.

Earth Houses – two underground Iron Agebuildings are on view in Angus, providing a rarechance to step back to pre-history days.

Barry Mill – one of Scotland’s last working,water-powered corn mills.

Kirriemuir Camera Obscura – gifted to the townof his birth by JM Barrie, this is one of the fewremaining examples of this fascinating Victorianinvention, which provides fabulous, real-time,images of the surrounding countryside.

Bon Scott Statue – Kirriemuir was the birthplaceof Bon Scott, tragic lead singer of the rock bandACDC, and the town remembers its famous sonwith a much-visited statue and a highly popularannual rock festival.

Standing stones – dotted across the Anguscountryside, providing a highly-visible reminderthat, over 2,000 years ago, this was the kingdomof the Picts.
