    Stupid

red and Ted were notvery smart. Theywere always getting

things wrong. The only workthey could get was diggingholes and painting. They wereeasy jobs but Fred and Ted stillmade mistakes. They dug holesin the wrong places, or paintedthings the wrong color. Oncethey painted a floor and thenwalked on it while the paintwas still wet.

One day their boss askedthem to paint a flagpole outsidethe office building. "Thisshouldn't be too difficult forthem to do," their boss thought."A11 they need is paint and brushes."

Their boss told them where the paint and brushes were and wentaway. An hour later he came back. Fred and Ted were not paintingthe flagpole. They didn't even have the paint and brushes. Fred wasstanding against the flagpole and Ted was standing on his shoulders, trying to reach the top of it with a ruler.

"What are you two men doing?" their boss asked."We have to find out how much paint we need," Ted said, "so

we're measuring the flagpole.""That's not the way to do it," their boss said. "Pull the flagpole

out of the ground, and lay it down."Ha " Fred said, "We're not stupid. We can't measure how high

it is that way. We can only measure how long it is."

If he spilt some milk, hismother would scold him forbeing careless. He wouldsay, "It wasn't my fault,Mom. The milk jumped outof my glass."

If he got up late in the morning, his mother would say, "You'relate " He would say, "It wasn't my fault, Mom. The sun was late."

Sometimes his excuses were funny because what he did was notimportant. Sometimes, however, they were not funny because whathe did was bad.

One day, his mother heard a crash. She ran to find out what theproblem was and found her best vase lying in tiny pieces at the bot-tom of the stairs. The little boy was standing at the top of the stairs.

"Did you push my vase down the stairs?" she shouted at him."It wasn't my fault," the boy said. "It was the vase's fault. I
