RE: IB PYP EXHIBITION Dear Parents Preparations for the Grade 6 IB PYP (International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme) Exhibition are well underway. For students this is the culmination of their experiences working over a number of years with the PYP and is in fact a summative assessment of their understandings of the programme principles and framework. The Exhibition is a requirement of the International Baccalaureate, the purpose being to assess the students’ understanding and to celebrate their success as learners, working within the framework of the programme. This will provide the opportunity for students to bring together all the subject disciplines and utilise all the transdisciplinary skills they have been learning through their time at school. As a summative assessment of learning, it must be conducted independently, though mentors do provide support in the form of suggestions and constructive feedback. Formative assessment is, therefore, ongoing throughout the process. The focus is on the trandsciplinary theme, Sharing the Planet. Working as part of a collaborative group, students are conducting an independent investigation into an issue of local and global importance in an attempt to prove the Central Idea: Actions and decisions have consequences that affect society and the environment. As a result of this investigation the task is for students to educate others and convince them to take some form of positive action. Findings will be presented in the form of an exhibit. Exhibits will be completed independently, without teacher/parent intervention, to reflect a true understanding of the task, the chosen issue, and students’ skills in developing, conducting, assessing and presenting the results of an investigation. There is a healthy level of collaboration and energy in the classrooms and hallways at the moment; it is encouraging to see students so engaged in their learning and so supportive of each other in the process. A formal graduation from the PYP will acknowledge students’ readiness to move on to the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP). Students are working in teams to prepare publicity and invitations for both the Exhibition and the PYP Graduation. We trust your child has informed you of the dates, but a more formal invitation is on its way. We look forward to enjoying both these occasions with you. Best regards Pauline Doolette-Cox PYP Coordinator
