President-elect urges Rotary members to 'Be a Gift to the Wor

Using their talents, expertise, and leadership, Rotary membersworldwide are asked to be gifts to the world this upcoming2015-16 Rotary year.

Rotary International President-elect K.R. "Ravi" Ravindrancalled Sunday's address to incoming district governors the"most significant moment of my life."

"All of you have been given so many gifts. And you have nowbeen given this great gift: one year to take all your talents, allyour gifts, everything that you are and can become -- and Be aGift to the World," said Ravindran, revealing his presidentialtheme at the annual five-day training meeting in San Diego,California, USA. "You have one year to take that potential andturn it into reality. One year to lead the clubs in your district andtransform the lives of others. The time is so short, yet there isso much to be done."

Highlighting Rotary's biggest challenge, the eradication of po-lio, Ravindran said, "A future without polio is a gift that we have

promised to the children of the world. And indeed it is a gift thatwe will give."

Ravindran discussed some of Rotary's other challenges, in-cluding membership.

"We have to find a way to bring back the fundamentals thatbuilt our organization: the emphasis on high ethical standardsin all aspects of our lives, and the classification system that

encourages a diversity of expertise in each club," he said. often these ideas are viewed as little more than inconvenieobstacles to increasing our membership. But they have beessential to Rotary's success, and we ignore them at our operil."

Ravindran told attendees that the focus on branding is ess

tial to helping Rotary grow. "We need to reposition our imawhich we recognize has faded in many parts of the world,"said.

Rotary also needs to continue to raise funds for The RotarFoundation, attract new members, and encourage greaterticipation from current members, he added.

The president-elect closed his speech emphasizing that nothe time to make real change.

"You have one year tobuild monuments thatwill endure forever, not

carved in granite ormarble, but in the livesand hearts of genera-tions. This is our time.It will not come again.Let us grasp it," hesaid.

At the beginning of this Rotary year, Iasked Rotarians everywhere to Light UpRotaryby holding a Rotary Day. How youdo this is something I'm leaving up to

you: It can be a full day or just a fewhours. It can be organized by your club,by your district, or even across your en-tire country. It can be a service project, afestival, or any kind of event you want.

As long as it's open to the community, mbraces the whole family of Rotary, and is fun, it's a Ro-ry Day.

he goal of a Rotary Day is to shine a light on Rotary. Forany years, we in Rotary felt that it wasn't appropriate to

oast about our good work. We felt it was best to serveuietly and let our work speak for itself. But today, in manymmunities, people aren't even aware that they have a

cal Rotary club. Not because the clubs aren't strong, orecause they aren't serving well. They are. But if Rotarianson't talk about their work, people will never know about it.

s time for us to Light Up Rotaryand let people knowhat we are doing. In the first half of this Rotary year, I'veeen thrilled to see how many Rotarians have taken up myotary Day challenge. I've attended Rotary Days in soany places, including the Philippines, Korea, China, thenited States, Turkey, India, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, and Bang-desh. Every one has been different, and every one haset the challenge to Light Up Rotaryin its own way.

you've organized a Rotary Day in your community, tell usbout it: Email details and photos of your event to [email protected],with "Rotary Day" as your subject line.e'll do our best to feature as many Rotary Days as possi-e in the coming months.

nd if you haven't planned a Rotary Day yet, why not? It'sgreat way to share your love for Rotary with your com-unity. When we tell others about Rotary and let themow how membership can enrich their lives, we share a

ft that was given to us when we were invited to join ourubs. By passing that gift on, we help ensure that Rotary,nd its service, will endure for generations to come.

January: In Roman times, this was sybolized by the two-headed god Janusone head looking back and one headlooking forward.

This is the time for us to take stock ansee, of the goals we set for ourselvesthe start of the year, how many we haachieved, and how we can fully realizof them by the end of this Rotary year

How are we meeting our goal of polio eradication? Did wencourage our district to give 20 percent of its District Denated Fund toward the eradication of this terrible disease

Are we supporting National Immunization Days? There istill much to do. The number of polio cases in Pakistan in2014 far exceeded the number in 2013.

Have you made your contribution to our charityour oncharityour Rotary Foundation? Have we impressed onthose Rotarians who have not made a contribution the neto do so? The number of Rotarians who have not given tour Foundation far exceeds the number who have given, and we need to reverse that statistic. Our target for the Anual Fund is US$123 million. Let us ensure that we reac

Have you considered taking advantage of the new grantprogram by using district or global grants? Last year, 858district grants and 492 global grants were awarded.

Have you nominated a Rotary Peace Fellow candidate?Have you sought out a Major Donor to help fund the pro-

gram? Have you registered for the Rotary Peace Symposium, just prior to the Rotary International Convention in Paulo, Brazil, in June?

I have always held the belief that if the message of Rotadoes not get to the Rotarian and the club, it loses its thruThe Rotary club is the heartbeat of Rotary. What you maof the remaining months of the year, as you endeavor to-Light Up Rotary, is up to you.

foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in par-

    ticular, to encourage and foster:

. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for ser-

    vice;

. High ethical standards in business and professions, the

recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the digni-
