Taking of Jerusalem by the Crusaders, Émile Signol, 1847

920 Years Ago Today!July 15, 1099 marks the final day of a five-week siege against Jerusalem by theChristian Crusaders against the Muslim Fatimids. Today, 920 years to theday, an archaeological team announced what is being heralded as the firstevidence of this famous battle.

In 2014, the Mount Zion Archaeology Project, under the academic oversightof the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, discovered a moatmentioned by a contemporary chronicler named Raymond of Aguilers.Prior to this discovery, some doubted the veracity of his report. Over the

Prior to this discovery, some doubted the veracity of his report. Over thecourse of five seasons, a portion of the missing moat was revealed and theCrusader account of their victory and of the moat was validated.

This is but the latest remarkable discovery by the Mount Zion team. Theproject is headed by Dr. James Tabor, Dr. Shimon Gibson, and Dr. Rafi Lewisand is made possible by the generous donations and hard work of manyvolunteers, including friends of United Israel Ron and Cherylee Vanderham, and United Israel leaders, David and Patty Tyler.

A Look Back - Israel's Place Amongthe Nations

By Ralph Buntyn

Israel, the Jewish State in Palestine, was born on May 14, 1948. As the sameyear was winding down, the symbolic ground breaking ceremony of theUnited Nations permanent headquarters located in the Turtle-Bay area onthe East Side of Manhattan took place. Fifty-eight sovereign state membershad equal representation in the UN General Assembly of the world’s largestintergovernmental organization. Israel was not among them.

Two gallant advocates led Israel’s battle for acceptance and membership inthe world body on the UN front.

Be sure to read the backstory leading to a key moment in the unfoldinghistory of a reborn State of Israel in Ralph Buntyn’s first article in our newseries titled “Israel’s Place among the Nations, A Look Back…”

In the early days of United Israel World Union, it was determined that theneeds of members might be best met through the establishment of what thefounder called Units. These small groups would join up for the Sabbath andbegin to develop friendships around a common love for Scripture and theHebraic way of life. Each of these units would come up with a name andattach the name of the unit to Beth (house). Generally, though not always, thename would reflect the family name of the hosting house so that forinstance a unit meeting at the Tyler home would be called Beth Tyler. At therecent UI conference several people began to discuss starting this again.

We have yet another UIWU Unit. Here is a report from Chyrl SchiedMcwilliams.

"Our unit, Bet Ahav, met to celebrate Shabbat yesterday :) For now it is AprilSmith, Torah (her fur baby), and myself. Some years ago we met and studiedthe Bible. At some point we "joined our sticks," as in Ezekiel. Due tocircumstances we stopped meeting. Pesach Sheni of this year brought usback together. Shortly after that Ross shared with us about anothermember's unit. I realized then that's what April and I had begun. Yesterdaywe chatted to find out how we could pray for each other and took time topraise Yah for all He'd done since the last time we met. Then we studiedJohn's notes on Ross' teaching "The Tablets-Take Two." Yah was speaking toboth of us. Torah threw in her "2 barks worth." We finished with a mealtogether and a hug goodbye. I left with a smile and joy in my heart. Torah hasa way of bringing people together like nothing else can! Here's to moreUnited Israel units."

The Day the War Stopped in SaintFrancisville, Louisiana

by Jon Langberg

I had the privilege of assisting my fellow Masonic brothers in setting up forthe reenactment before taking my leave of them for the UIWU Bible studywith Ross. I returned later with my wife and another member of UIWU tolisten to the perspective from the Hart Family of this story who now attendsthe reenactment every year with representatives from his Lodge of Masonsin New York.

The following is a different story about a day in the War Between theStates. I could not do a better job in explaining it than the write up providedby ExploreSouthernHistory.com See below.

Each year in June, the beautiful Louisiana town of St. Francisvilleremembers a day of peace that took place there in the midst of one ofthe bloodiest months of the Civil War. "The Day the War Stopped"features various events including reenactments and ceremonies whichremember the unusual funeral services of Lt. Commander John E. Hartof the U.S. Navy. His crew had used historic Grace Church in St.Francisville for target practice, but then humbly asked for permissionto bury him there. The events took place during the bloody Battle andSiege of Port Hudson, Louisiana. Located atop high bluffs overlookingthe Mississippi River about 12 miles south of St. Francisville, PortHudson was a major Confederate bastion established in August of 1862to prevent Union warships from reaching the confluence of theMississippi and Red Rivers. Both rivers were of vital importance to the

Mississippi and Red Rivers. Both rivers were of vital importance to theConfederacy and as long as Port Hudson stood, no major Unionexpedition could be launched up either.

In March of 1863, Admiral David G. Farragut tried to steam his flotillapast Port Hudson, but the U.S.S. Mississippi was destroyed and all buttwo of his ships had to turn back. Of the two that made it through, onewas his flagship the U.S.S. Hartford and the other was the U.S.S.Albatross, captained by Lt. Commander John E. Hart. The Albatrosstook part in several raids and actions in the months that followed, butby June of 1863 was back in the Mississippi River above PortHudson. The citadel was then withstanding a major siege by 30,000Union troops and the Albatross assisted by shelling positions along theriver north of the ring of Confederate fortifications. One of thesetargets was St. Francisville. Grace Episcopal Church, which servedWest Feliciana Parish, stood high atop the ridge overlooking theMississippi at St. Francisville and was used as a target for the guns ofthe Union warship, which rained shells down on the beautiful Gothicstructure and adjacent town. But then on June 12, 1863, the gunsstrangely fell silent and before long one of the most unusual stories ofthe Civil War began to play itself out.

Aboard the Albatross, delirious from high fever and before any of hisofficers or crew could stop him, Lt. Commander John E. Hart had takenhis own life. Hart was a Mason, as were several of his officers, andbefore long a boat bearing a white flag left the warship and pulled forshore. It carried a messenger who asked for permission to bury thecaptain in the cemetery of Grace Church, the same sanctuary theAlbatross had used as a target. The Union officers probably didn't knowit, but St. Francisville was also home to the oldest Masonic Lodge inLouisiana, Feliciana Lodge No. 31, F & M. Its Senior Warden, W.W.Leake, was captain of Company C, 1st Louisiana Cavalry, one of theunits harassing the Federal army besieging Port Hudson. CaptainLeake was summoned and met with the Union officers. Hearing ofHart's fate and learning that he was a fellow Mason, Leake arrangedpermission for him to be buried at Grace Church.

Accompanied by an honor guard of U.S. Marines, a delegation of Navyofficers and sailors brought Hart's coffin up the steep bluff to thechurch. With Leake and other local Masons participating, they buriedtheir captain with full Masonic honors in the cemetery. It was a briefmoment of peace and fellowship in the midst of the bloodiest war inAmerican history. The small Masonic funeral and its associated eventsare still remembered in St. Francisville as "The Day the War Stopped."

The 4th Month on the JewishCalendar-Tammuz Part One

From the Mountaintop of Sinai To the Descent of BabylonPart of an Ongoing Series entitled Hidden Sparks Beneath the Surface

By Elisheva Tavor aka Betty Tabor Givin

All of the months are interrelated each connecting to the next in thecycle of the seasons, the ‘round’ of the year…set up by the Creator fromthe beginning for our benefit to make up what we call time…each issignificant to the whole…and each carries within it a special spark thatlies hidden beneath the surface, waiting to be discovered…to connect usdeeper to Him. This month with its abominable name and its darkhistory, although challenging is no exception! We just have to digdeeper to find the sparks!

It is easy to see HaShem in the dramatic fire of Sinai, but it is a whole otherlevel of maturity to see Him in the midst of difficult circumstances when wefeel the darkness encompassing round about us. This has been theprevailing mood in the hearts and minds of many a Jew throughout historywhen it comes to this month. So let us educate ourselves and rise to meetwhatever challenges we face this coming month.

The Origin of the NameSpeaking of this 4th month Rebbetzin Zipporah Heller in an article onaish.com entitled Tammuz: Forces of Nature says this: “This month isnamed after the ancient Babylonian sun god (Ezekiel 8:14). I can’t say that if Iwere selecting names for Jewish months that this is the first one that wouldhave come to mind. In fact, it seems the opposite of what the entire conceptthe Hebrew calendar is about. Each month offers us the opportunity forgrowth and renewal. Idol worship is pagan and limiting. Invoking the nameof a central figure in a cult that worshipped the sun as the source of allenergy seems somehow retrogressive.” (Tammuz: Forces of Nature;aish.com)

My choice of words would be a bit stronger here. The Prophet Ezekiel callsthe worship of this idolatrous god abominable when HaShem shows him thechilling vision of the wicked abominations being committed…first of theelders of the House of Israel burning incense in the dark and saying,“HaShem sees us not; HaShem has forsaken the land; “and then thewomen sitting in the Holy Temple weeping over Tammuz followed by theaccount of more of the men with their backs toward the temple prostratingthemselves before the sun! (Ezekiel 8:11-16)

This pagan god they were worshipping was originally a Sumerian sun-god,called Dumuzu and was the husband of Ishtar who corresponds to Aphroditeof the Greeks, the Queen of Heaven and had made its way into Babylon.Considering the disgraceful and licentious rites with which the cult wascelebrated, it is no wonder that Ezekiel should have taken this vision of themen committing their abominable acts and the women weeping forTammuz in the temple as one of the greatest abominations that could defilethe Holy House!

Why a Babylonian god’s name on the Jewish Calendar? How did the name of this Babylonian god find its way into the Jewishcalendar? The Jerusalem Talmud tells us it “came up (to Israel) with (thereturnees) from Babylon, “in approximately 350 BCE. (Rosh Hashanah 1:2)

Knowing its origin the question becomes why after returning from Babylondid the Jews continue using the name of this pagan god instead of followingthe original Biblical system of the 1st month, the 2nd month, the 3rd month, the 4th month, etc.?

Rabbi Menachem Posner in an article on Chabad.org entitled, “WhyBabylonian Names for Jewish Months,” states that Nachmanides suggeststhat it is to help us remember that HaShem brought us out of Babylon. Hereferences verses from the prophet Jeremiah (Jer.16:14) which read“Therefore, behold days are coming says HaShem when it shall no morebe said, As HaShem lives that brought the children of Yisrael out ofMitzrayim, but, as HaShem lives, that brought up the children ofYisrael from the land of the north…” which he refers to as Babylon.

Page 15: Rabbi Dennis Jones! - United Israel World Union · 7/15/2019  · Rabbi Dennis Jones! The officers and Board of United Israel World are pleased to announce that Dennis Jones has officially

Yisrael from the land of the north…” which he refers to as Babylon.

It appears that this event is also a reference to a larger more widespreadfuture redemption; for the remainder of the verse includes deliverance notonly from the land of the north (Babylon), but also deliverance “from all thelands into which He had driven them…and concludes with a promise thatHe “would bring them back into their land that He gave to theirfathers.” This same passage is repeated almost word for word a fewchapters later in Jeremiah 23:7.

The article by Rabbi Posner goes on to suggest that by using the originalnumeric ordering system for the months with Nissan being the 1st monthand all of the succeeding months to follow, we are recalling how manymonths since the Exodus from Egypt but we need also to remember ourdeliverance from Babylon. When we were delivered from captivity westarted using the names that we became used to using while there. And now,he says “these names served to remind us that G-d has redeemed us fromthis second exile.”

Certainly we would need to remember the deliverance from the Babylonianexile, but do we also not need to look forward to a future redemption asspoken of in these passages in Jeremiah and all through the propheticwritings? And do we need to name a month after a pagan god in order toremember our deliverance? HaShem warns through His prophet Moshethat we should not even allow the name of a pagan god to pass our lips.“Regarding everything that I have said to you, be careful. The name ofthe gods of others you shall not mention nor shall it be heard throughyour mouth.” (Exodus 23:13) HaShem is a jealous G-d; we are to have noother gods before Him!

Why Babylonian Captivity? To see things as they really are we first need to ask why Judah was taken intoBabylonian captivity in the first place. Reading through the prophets, theanswer is clear. The people of the land were steeped in idolatry and refusedto listen to the warnings to return to G-d. Sadly all these repeated warningsfell on deaf ears…first the Northern Kingdom of Israel was taken intoAssyrian captivity and dispersed. Subsequently less than 200 years later theSouthern kingdom of Judah not having learned from her sisterIsrael’s demise, was also taken away…taken to Babylon, a place whereidolatry was rampant. In the heartbreaking words of the weeping prophetJeremiah, we read, “and yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hasnot returned unto Me with her whole heart, but in pretense, saithYHVH,” backsliding Israel hath proved herself more righteous thantreacherous Judah.”(Jer 3:10-11).

Events Associated with This Month - Five Destructive ElementsThere are many events recorded in Jewish tradition and history thatoccurred during this month, but there are five major ones that stand out.

Page 16: Rabbi Dennis Jones! - United Israel World Union · 7/15/2019  · Rabbi Dennis Jones! The officers and Board of United Israel World are pleased to announce that Dennis Jones has officially

occurred during this month, but there are five major ones that stand out.(1) 1st Tablets were broken as a result of the Golden Calf Incident(2) Jerusalem Walls were breached on17th Tammuz (3) Romans placed an idol in the Holy Temple(4) Daily offerings could no longer continue(5)The Romans burned a Torah scroll

Given these horrific events, Rebbetzin Heller referenced in her article aboveasks a question, “Does this mean that the month of Tammuz is a “badmonth? “ She says no but refers to it as “a month of challenge andconfrontation. Without challenge, there is no growth. Withoutconfrontation, there is no way to see things as they are.”

Is it possible that part of the reason for all these tragic events associated withthis 4th month down through history is due to the fact that instead of puttingBabylon behind them when they were freed and allowed to return to theirown land, that the people took the name of the Babylonian god with them…and the repercussions of this have been far reaching…even up to thepresent? We may never know, but it is certainly a question to consider andthen to confront whatever challenges may arise.

Meeting the Challenge of the MonthI propose that we concentrate on the present for that is really all that we inactuality have; but as we start here with the present let us keep in mind thehistory of the tragic events of this month so that we can learn from them; butlet us also look ahead to the promise of the future and all the while be awareof just Who is in charge.

Each person on our planet was created with a uniqueness all his or her own,a thumbprint so to speak unlike any other. Each was created in the image ofHaShem our G-d and Creator, YHVH, the One and Only G-d above all gods!We each have a ‘spark’ a little ‘piece’ of the Divine within that connects usto our Creator, our Source.

I would also like to propose a challenge, one that will help to fortify us for thecoming month so that we can stand strong and resolute…Nitzavim!

Nitzavim – a Personal Story Nitzavim – from Devarim/Deuteronomy 29 describes how the Children ofIsrael stood before HaShem at Mt. Sinai. The meaning of this word wasvividly demonstrated to me personally by 6’4” Uri Ben Ari, a secular Jew andhead of the American sector of a large Israeli cosmetic and skincare company that I worked for a number of years ago. When I told Mr. BenAri that Nitzavim was the Torah portion being read in synagogues the weekof my conversion, he abruptly arose from his casual sitting position andstood upright, straight and tall…all 6’4” inches of him, and said, “Nitzavim!Nitzavim! Stand tall, stand firm!!! That is the message to you, Betty…toall of us… that is what we must do!”

Page 17: Rabbi Dennis Jones! - United Israel World Union · 7/15/2019  · Rabbi Dennis Jones! The officers and Board of United Israel World are pleased to announce that Dennis Jones has officially

Yes, stand firm! Know Before Whom We Stand! These words are ofteninscribed above the Ark containing the Torah in the synagogues. These arebeautiful words, but how do we practically live them out day by day?

The First Step- Coming Home!Come home…come home to yourself, come home to who you are, to yourtrue essence, your authentic self…not the self you perceive or desire othersto see, but the self that HaShem sees, the self that He created you to be…

In the words of Devarim 4:39, we find the riveting words, “Know today andreturn it to your hearts that HaShem He is G-d!” If we are instructed to“return it to our hearts,” the implication is that it was once in our hearts, correct? So was it in utero as the sages suggest? We know that whenHaShem created us, He placed a pure soul within us, a spirit that will one dayreturn to Him. (Ecclesiastes 12:7)

One of the long established tenets of Judaism is that we answer a questionwith a question, so let’s ask. How do we “come home” to the pure soul thatHaShem created us to be? How do we “return “that concept to our hearts? What does it entail?

One of my longtime favorite concepts that HaShem placed in my head longbefore I knew anything about Torah is the term G-d Consciousness. I trulybelieve that this is the key to not only knowing HaShem, but to knowingourselves…to becoming transparent before Him. But how to we get to thatplace where we have that Divine Consciousness, where we bring Him intoevery aspect of our lives and are transparent before HaShem? Bringing itdown a level, how do we get to know another human being? If I wanted to getto know you, what would you suggest that I do?

Spend time with you, listen to you, and learn what is important to you…what makes you happy, what hurts you, what you like to do, etc. Yes, thisis communication, right? And communication goes both ways. So how do wecarry on this communication with our Creator?

First, we have to get to Know Him and in knowing Him, acknowledge HisOneness. One way is through reading His Word and letting it penetrate ourhearts, our minds, our souls…and then taking these words with usthroughout the day and praying with King David, “Open my eyes HaShemthat I may behold wondrous things in your Torah.” (Psa. 119:18) When westudy Torah, HaShem talks to us

When we meditate and pray, we talk to HaShem. Rav Dror says that when wepray, we need to talk to HaShem like we talk to our best friend…we openourselves up…we become transparent…we bare our souls so to speak beforeHim, but He already knows us through and through…so what is the purposereally of prayer, of meditation? It is to draw us out of ourselves and ourperception of who we are and to help us come to grips with our true selves,

Page 18: Rabbi Dennis Jones! - United Israel World Union · 7/15/2019  · Rabbi Dennis Jones! The officers and Board of United Israel World are pleased to announce that Dennis Jones has officially

perception of who we are and to help us come to grips with our true selves,so that we can be honest and humble as we walk before Him. (Micah 6:8)

It is to bring us to that “Secret Place,” under the Wings of the Almighty, theplace described so eloquently in Psalm 91, where in the midst of darknessand distress, we can know with full assurance that He is there with becausewe have given ourselves to Him and are devekut (stuck like glue), bondedto Him. He is our Protector, but He is also our Assurance and our Mainstay(from the Weekday Amidah or Standing Prayer found in the siddur, theJewish prayer book).

We each have our own “secret place,” not a physical place, but a spiritualplace deep inside ourselves, a place where Rabbi Jonathan Sacks calls theplace “ where Heaven and Earth touch, ”that special place where we cancommunicate with our Creator, the place where our spark is once againreignited, rekindled as we connect with Him. My secret place is not thesame as yours, nor yours the same as mine. But when we are there, we arehome. The world around us may be in turmoil, but we are at peace.

But how do we maintain this when the storms hit? We stay in Torah andwrap our days in prayer…as if we are wrapping ourselves in a giant prayershawl, a tallit… His tallit, His covering… where we receive protectionbeneath the Shadow of His Wings! We invite Him into our lives…beginningin the morning light and continuing through the day, ending with theBedtime Shema at night. As the darkness encompasses us we are not afraidfor we know He is with us.

Seeing in the Dark –Transforming the Darkness into Light In Beresheit 1:1 we read, “ In the beginning Elokim created the heavensand the earth. And the earth was void and without form and darkness/chochech was on the face of the deep. And a wind from Elokim movedover the surface of the waters. And Elokim said, Let there be light andthere was light. And Elokim saw the light that it was good, and Elokimseparated the light from the darkness. And Elokim called the light Day,and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and therewas morning, one day.” The light always follows the darkness!

In the poetic words of King David beginning in Psalm 6:7 and continuingthrough verse 10 we read, “I am weary with groaning all the night. Imake my bed to swim. I water my couch with my tears”…”yet HaShemhas heard my weeping, He receives my prayers!” King David had foundthe “secret place” to meet with His Creator. We must learn to SEE in theDARK…past the darkness! The question is how? How do we do that? We dothat by maintaining that G-d Consciousness which helps us to keep in mindthat in the midst of the darkest night there is the promise of the coming ofeach new morning; and with the morning, the light will reappear!

HaShem said that “it is not good for man to be alone.” He placed us infamilies and provides us with friends and communities for a reason. By

Page 19: Rabbi Dennis Jones! - United Israel World Union · 7/15/2019  · Rabbi Dennis Jones! The officers and Board of United Israel World are pleased to announce that Dennis Jones has officially

acknowledging that His light is there, we can let it light up the darknessaround us. With just one little spark coming from one little candle we canlight up a whole room! When my world is dark you can bring in your lightand it will shine and light up my darkness; and when your world is dark, Ican do the same for you…and together with the help of HaShem we can lightup the entire world!

It is easy to see HaShem in the dramatic fire of Sinai, but it is a wholeother level of maturity to see Him in the darkness! This is our challengefor the upcoming months…the 4th month and the 5th month…the saddesttwo months in Jewish history…

So let us rise to meet that challenge. Let us hold hands, stand strong,Nitzavim and encourage one another to learn to see in the dark, to delvedeep and discover those “hidden sparks beneath the surface” so that eventhe slightest sliver of good becomes visible to us in the midst of thedarkness; and we through the help of HaShem can lean on one another andhave the strength to rise and shine and transform the darkness that hascharacterized this month through the ages into Glorious Light! BaruchHaShem!

In the next couple of weeks we should havethe registration site available so that we can start getting an idea of howmany people will be attending. When it is populated by you all, theregistration site should let us know how many people and on what days youwill be attending. This will help us develop other plans i.e. meal alternatives, different functions and schedules.

I have already secured a block of 10 rooms at the Francis Hotel which canaccommodate individuals or doubles to share room cost. The highest pricewith taxes per night is $120. The hotel is a little dated but the advantage istwo people can split the cost. The phone number for the Francis Hotel is 225-635-3821.

We have a block of 15 rooms at the relatively new Best Western hear intown. Their cost is also $120/night but they only have King Rooms whichonly accommodate singles or married couples. Both Hotels providebreakfast. The phone number for the Best Western is 225-635-5851.

****Important things to note. The Hotel Francis block of rooms is reservedunder my name, Jon Langberg. The Best Western block of rooms is reservedunder United Israel World Union. Reservations for the rooms must be madeby September 27th at the latest or the rooms become open for others. Theweekend of Sukkot is also a rodeo weekend here and all the rooms in townlast year for the event were booked, so if you’re coming don’t be shy aboutsecuring the rooms.

For additional accommodations for small groups or families, there are a fewreasonably priced Air B and Bs in town as well as RV Parks and CampGrounds in the area. All of those can be found on your search engines.

Stay in touch on the UIWU webpage, register as soon as you are able andsecure your accommodations as soon thereafter as you can. We will beproviding more information about meal alternatives, different functions andschedules as time goes by. I am looking forward to seeing as many of you aspossible in October.

Shalom

Prof. James D. Tabor and Biblical teacher Ross Nichols are teaming up againfor an exclusive tour of the Holy Land February 28 – March 10, 2020. This istheir sixth tour together. Even if you have traveled to Israel before, orspecifically traveled with Tabor or Nichols, this is the tour for you.

We will take you behind the scenes, exploring new archaeological and textualdiscoveries as they are related to the key Biblical sites we will visit. No tourcan cover everything, but we will take you, quite literally, from Dan toBeersheba – and even 60 miles south, deep into the Arava, locating one ofthe biblical “camps” of the ancient Israelites in the time of Moses.

Anyone interested in biblical history and literature will find this tour refreshingand educational from beginning to end. We have no expectations regardingbelief systems, politics, or faith orientations. All that is required to go on thistour is a strong orientation toward learning more about the Bible andits history and archaeology.

The tour will transform the way you read and understand the Bible.Throughout the tour, we will share the stories that you know well from thetexts, in the very places where the events actually took place. We are limitingthe number of registrants to 40–one busload—because we want each personto have time to interact directly with Dr. Tabor and Ross Nichols.
