I am reminded of the work of John Currey who is the publisher at The Colony Press. John has a range of maybe 20 books and these are all handmade. This is taken from his catalogue “the text is printed on Mohawk Superfine eggshell soft white 118 gsm, made in the United States. The endpaper stock is made in France by Canson et Mongolfier. The printed sheets are collated, folded, cut, glued and bound by hand at the Old Shed Bindery. Unlike those of modern paperback books, our bindings are reinforced to make them strong and secure.” And you wonder why we sell them firm sale. And who is John Currey? This is taken from www.austlit.edu.au/ - Currey O'Neil was an off-shoot of Lansdowne Press; formed by an alliance between former editor of Lansdowne, John Currey, and Lloyd O'Neil. The two joined forces and produced nearly fifty titles; five of which were allocated to the Australian Classics Series. Their list was a broad cross-section of Australian material and embraced poetry, humour and general fiction. In 1987 Lloyd O'Neil sold his publishing companies (Lloyd O'Neil Pty Ltd and Currey) to Penguin books. What is the state of the book trade? I read about how we are all going – you read the same blowing and bleating. People do not accept change – it is either denied or people do not accept how to work with change. Certainly this business has had to accept change and evolve with how consumer purchasing determines how or where they take their content. Book “content” is certainly being delivered across as many platforms as consumers demand. Let me talk about three examples.Firstly, we distribute the “Secret Girls'” series of books and have for about 12 years, we have not had a new title for years and the number of shops we deal with since we commenced distribution has probably halved. But our unit sales for the first 9 months of this fiscal are up 11% on previous year and 12% on the year before; and these books are sold to you on a firm sale basis. Thank you for all of these repurchases. We will be announcing the new title from this publisher at the book show at ABA in May. Secondly I was thrilled to see the work of one of our publishers “Melbournestyle” used as the basis for the 2015 “Hello From Australia Catalogue” being showcased at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. When I saw for the first time one of Maree Coote’s newest titles last year I thought it good enough to be shortlisted for the Critici in erba award. Well it made it to be the lead title on the Bologna catalogue. The other highlight of that catalogue is that the following Children’s publishers who are distributed by us appear on that list; Berbay Publishing and Funkybooks; congratulations.

Last week we also received notification that Wilkins Farago had been nominated in the Oceania region for the third annual Bologna Prize for Best Children’s Publishers of the Year. Presented by the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. The other publishers were Text Publishing and A&U. Congratulations to Andrew & Anna! And Melbourne is becoming the home of the multiple outlet bookseller.Readings – Carlton, Hawthorn, Malvern, St Kilda, SLVRobinsons – Frankston, Greensborough, Highpoint, Chadstone.Avenue Bookshop – Albert Park, ElsternwickMy Bookshop by Corrie Perkin – Hawksburn, ToorakStephen Hepburn – Coventry Books, Avoca Hill.

I have to also say something about our eBooks growth. Some will want this blacked out; our largest eBook outlet has grown by over 300% year on year. The consumers are out there and they decide what and how they will buy.If you are interested have a read of this linkhttp://authorearnings.com/report/january-2015-author-earnings-report/

This month’s list provides an understanding of change as well. The new Ber Carroll will now be printed to allow sale or return trading terms on the “trade” print edition; once we sell out of the “trade” edition we will somehow drop back to the firm sale POD version. I don’t know how else this will work. If the demand continues and the shops give the book a long tail support that will help keep the sale or return edition in print. However the shops and titles inventoried is so seasonal. At this time we have sold 2500 of the digital editions of her work “Worlds Apart”. The other issue is that those guided in stocking by Bookscan won’t see this number. I am concerned at how our industry has an overview on matters like this.

Best wishesDJPS I bought the new Geoffrey Blainey the other day; smashing looking book and look forward to renewing my reading relationship with Blainey. Don’t forget it was my luck to be at a State funded High School studying Australian history that had “The Tyranny of Distance” on the set texts list that got me into this business of books some time ago!DJ

Once Lost

Are some things better left unfound?Best friends Louise and Emma grew up next door to each other in a grim inner-city suburb of Dublin. Now Louise, an art conservator, is thousands of miles away in Sydney, restoring a beautiful old painting. She meets Dan, whose family welcome her as one of their own, but she will always feel lost until she finds her mother who walked out when she was just eight years old. Back in Dublin, Emma is stuck in a job where she is under-appreciated and underpaid, but her biggest worry is her ex-partner, Jamie. Emma has lost so much because of Jamie: her innocence, her reputation, almost her life. Now she is at risk of losing Isla, her young daughter. So where is Louise's mother? Will Emma ever be free of her ex? Both women frantically search for answers, but when the truth finally emerges it is more shattering than they had ever expected.

Raising a Nation

Raising a Nation, the third volume of Xanana Gusmao's speeches, shows the intellect, emotion, and poetry that the Prime Minister of Timor‐Leste displayed in his public speaking, and in his leadership.Xanana Gusmao's journey to become leader of his country is one of the world's great stories. From guerrilla fighter during his country's occupation, to a prisoner in exile, and finally returning to become one of the founding fathers of the Democratic Republic of Timor‐Leste, Xanana Gusmao's life has provided him with the political and visceral experiences that few other modern political leaders possess.The speeches collected here celebrate how one man has taken his small, new nation onto the international stage. To the world's established nations they stand as a reminder that leaders with honesty, humility, and clarity of vision have a place in our world. To emerging nations, following in Timor‐Leste's footsteps, these speeches will provide practical insight into nationbuilding in the twenty‐first century.There is much yet to be achieved in Timor‐Leste, but through these speeches we begin to understand where the nation has come from. This will give its people, and the rest of the world, great hope for its future. His Excellency retired as Prime Minister on 6 February 2015.

'These are the writings and speeches of a reconciler who has fought the good fight and of a nation’s founder who has given his all to the next, more difficult stage of national development and growth.'  – F r  Frank Brennan SJ AO'Unfortunately, this book cannot showcase the raw strength of commitment, passion and deep emotion that are always the foundation of an address by Xanana Gusmao where crowds in their thousands stand silently mesmerized, or are yelling at the top of their voices 'Xanana Xanana Xanana' ‐ Major General Mick Slater AO, DSC, CSC

Steve K.

In 1974 Zorlu Kaya broke up with his girlfriend, quit school and set up a plan to jump on the nearest ship from his homeland of Cyprus – and go wherever it took him. His father stumbled on the plans, and arranged for the restless 15-year-old to fly to Melbourne, Australia for a few weeks holiday. It was a decision that changed lives forever. Weeks after arriving in Melbourne armed conflict erupted in Cyprus. The boy could not return. Stranded, and alone, he became an accidental refugee.

From working as a bouncer on nightclub doors, he became known as ‘Turkish Steve’ or ‘Steve K.’ Before long he found himself debt-collecting, running one of the city’s biggest illegal casinos, breeding thoroughbred race horses, running a Turkish television channel and bringing Turkey’s biggest showbiz people to Australia.

Then, in early 2004, he received a tip-off. Gangland figures had taken out a contract to have him killed. He needed to set a plan - to survive.

Great Ocean Quarterly is a beautiful high‐quality journal of literature, art, photography, science, history and ideas, gathered around the central theme of our relationship to the oceans. It’s printed on heavy stock and it goes thump when you put it down. We think it might be the world’s first literary journal devoted entirely to the ocean.

In our next issue, on sale 2 April, we’ve got glorious feature stories from two very different artists: Fred Williams painting the islands of Bass Strait, and National Geographic’s trailblazing underwater photographer David Doubilet looking back over his distinguished career. There’s also fiction by Jack Finlay, an essay by leading British author Philip Hoare, a walk on the Margaret River coast, and the story of a sea‐going rhinoceros, along with much, much more.

Transition in Architecture

From BP House to The Domain, Transition in Architecture covers the period from 1962 to today. In that year BP decided to move from the CBD and to construct new headquarters on the corner of St Kilda Road and Albert Road. The building was completed at the end of November 1964. The building immediately became a Melbourne landmark and an archetype in its own right, breaking away from the 'glass box' style that had become prevalent in Melbourne. The National Trust also recognised its significance. Anyone over about 50 in Melbourne remembers the light displays on the front of the building each Easter and Christmas.

In 1993 BP moved out and the building was purchased by Hudson Conway. It was then converted into apartments, becoming The Domain on completion in 1995 and has become one of the prestige high‐rise apartment towers in  Melbourne.

The Big Whatever

The fourth novel in Peter Doyle's award-winning crime series, due in May 2015, takes his irresistible hero, Billy Glasheen, into new territory.

When it comes to sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll, Billy’s always been in the vanguard, but as the swinging 60s turn into the 70s, he’s living a quiet life. He has kids now, and he’s in debt to the mob, so he's keeping his head down, driving a cab, running some low-level rackets. He may as well have gone straight, it’s so boring. Then one day everything changes. He finds a trashy paperback in his cab whose plot seems weirdly familiar. Billy himself seems to be a major character in it. He can’t think who could’ve written it other than Max, his old partner in crime who double-crossed him and left him in the mess he’s in. Only Max is dead. He went up in flames, along with lots of cash, after a bank heist. But if Max is alive, Billy has a score to settle. And if he didn’t get fried to a crisp, maybe the money didn’t either. Billy has to find out, by following clues planted in that strange little book. He soon discovers he’s not the only one on Max’s trail, and has to deal with enemies old and new in his strangest adventure yet.

With its ingenious novel-within-a-novel structure, The Big Whatever is a grab-you-by-the throat crime story, an original take on the early 70s in Australia, and a shrewd reflection on a defining moment in modern Australian life. And in the modern tradition of crime storytelling that includes the novels of Elmore Leonard and Charles Willeford, the films of Quentin Tarantino, and TV series such as Breaking Bad and The Sopranos, The Big Whatever is at once darkly funny and deadly serious.

Fabulous But Broke

When Alice fell down the rabbit hole she found a magic drink and a magic cake. Today many of us are still searching for the magic formula when it comes to finances but sadly it doesn’t exist. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you knew that it was up to you, right? There are no unicorns, fairy godmothers or magical shoes coming to save you but you do have something very important which fairytale characters often don’t have. Choice.

The problem is many of us are carrying such twisted money messages around with us that we aren’t exercising choice. That’s why I wrote this book – t o  challenge your mindset in a cheeky, fun way and to show you where you could be heading but, just as importantly, what an alternative ending might look like. That way we can be our own fairy godmothers and prince charmings and financially save ourselves.

Fabulous But Broke is a collection of financial fairytales which highlight money messages we carry with us and suggest an alternative, happy ending. From these stories I hope you will be inspired to write your own financial fairytale to make the right decisions for financial freedom, opportunity and happiness for today and the rest of your life.

Vegetarian Vampires

Have you ever read a self‐improvement book and wondered how on earth the sage advice can be put to practical use? If yes, then Vegetarian Vampires and What We Can Learn From Them is the book for you. Each of the laws in Deepak Chopra’s The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success is examined in a series of essays by Jennifer McDonald, a run‐of‐the‐mill person, small business owner and working mother. She’s certainly no guru but drawing from her own ordinary life experience Jennifer takes these laws out for a spin, and then imparts her sometimes surprising, usually off‐centre yet always authentic conclusions.

“The use of metaphor and popular culture bring these spiritual laws alive for me. Highly recommended.” Richard Laansma, Brisbane, Australia

“Jen McDonald is a truth seeker of the first order. Vivid, discerning, full of humanity, Vegetarian Vampires tackles enormous, life‐shaping ideas with humour, humility and effortless nuance.” Liz Beatty, award‐winning travel journalist and communicator, Ontario, Canada

“All of this is possible. Of course we’ll stuff it up  and make a mess of it and try to fight against that rip instead of letting go. But that’s when we need a book like this, to remind ourselves that this glorious mess of a journey is life, our own, one life.”  ‐ Sarah Peters, PhD Theatre Student, University of Southern Queensland

Love Letters from Transylvania

‘Hugh Kiernan’s memoir cycles, tantalisingly but purposefully, among different modes—expository, dramatic, narrative, and descriptive—and sometimes blurs the boundary between fiction and nonfiction. But the effect of the whole is perhaps best described as lyrical, as the prose has the compression and metaphorical openness characteristic of poetry. The result is a narrative that powerfully communicates the disorientation and even self‐estrangement attendant on a life‐changing, and life‐threatening, condition. An achievement rare in my experience of illness narrative.’G Thomas Couser ‐ Author of Memoir: An introduction and Recovering Bodies: Illness, disability and life writing

‘Hugh Kiernan’s writing inhabits liminal spaces between health and illness. His carefully crafted stories differ from the usual first‐person memoir tradition adopted by authors making sense of their illness experiences. He uses experiences of other ill people or his experience with a context or with inanimate objects or a trying situation to structure stories that provide compelling insights into the world of health care.’ Emeritus Professor Annette Street ‐ Author of Inside Nursing, Nursing Replay and Thinking, Acting, Reflecting

‘An extraordinary memoir: a journey into a netherworld where both the surreal and the achingly real, pain and morphine‐induced euphoria, are seamlessly interwoven. Hugh Kiernan is a participant‐observer, a witness to his experience of cancer, unflinching in his attention to detail, yet transcendent in capturing the flow of the journey.’Arnold Zable ‐ Author of Violin Lessons and Café Scheherazade

I Should be Happy but I’m Not

On the outside, Heidi Di Santo looked like she had it all together. As a successful business person, her life seemed perfect. But looks can be deceiving. Heidi wore a mask that hid her truth from the world. Inside she was stressed, overwhelmed, depressed and not coping with life. This book shares Heidi’s personal journey into emotional fitness and provides a structure for others to thrive and not just survive in life.

You deserve more from your life. If you want to find inner peace and happiness, Heidi has synthesised all of her experience into this book to help you achieve this sooner rather than later. Your life doesn’t need to be so hard. If you are struggling emotionally, just know there is real help out there, help that treats the cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.

Thailand: Deadly Destination

The daily robbing, bashing, drugging, extortion and murder of foreign tourists on Thai soil, along with numerous scandals involving unsafe facilities and well established scams, has led to frequent predictions that Thailand's multi‐billion dollar tourist industry will self‐destruct. Instead tourist numbers more than doubled in the decade to 2014. The world might not have come to the hometowns of the many visitors fascinated by Thailand, but it certainly came to the Land of Smiles. While the Thai media is heavily censored, and bad news stories about tourists suppressed, nonetheless there is more than enough evidence to demonstrate that something has gone seriously awry with the nation's tourist industry. In 2014, just as in the years preceding it, there were train, bus, ferry, speedboat, motorbike and car accidents, murders, knifings, unexplained deaths, numerous suicides, diving accidents, robberies gone wrong, anonymous bodies washing up on the shores and a string of alcohol and drug related incidents. Thailand had a dying king and serious succession problems, weak democratic institutions, an economy slipping into recession, faced issues of corruption across many of its key services and was host to international crime syndicates, awash with despised foreigners and drifting perilously towards civil war. Tourists choose one destination over another for a number of reasons, most of which Thailand scores highly on. But on the core issue of tourist safety, Thailand scores very badly indeed.

The Right Way, the Wrong Way and the Railway takes a real 'warts and all' look at the Victorian Railways. Eight years in the making, this book abounds in history, humour, railway stuff-ups and the typical stupidity which often went with The Job.

From the mysteries of safeworking to suburban shenanigans, from close shaves to the downright bizarre, this book has it all - right across the state - from the 1920s through to the 1980s. From the memories of 50 railwaymen and women, this book is 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' of the VR!

Rails To Old Walhalla

Nestled deep in the hills of the Great Dividing Range, 140 km east of Melbourne, lies the romantic gold town of Walhalla. Situated in a narrow twisting valley, Walhalla is the very image of a ghost town, with cabins clinging precariously to high cliff walls, and a cascading stream tumbling past immense mullock heaps which tell of past glory days, when the town contained some of the richest gold mines in Victoria, and its population soured into the thousands.   The book includes the story of Walhalla ‐ from Stringers Creek shanty town to  modern day tourist favourite; the history of the Moe to Walhalla narrow gauge railway, one of Victoria's most ambitious engineering feats, from construction right through to closure of the line in 1954, with fascinating memories from railwaymen who worked the line.

The Narrow Gauge

The Victorian Railways narrow gauge lines portrayed the very essence of the Australian pioneering spirit, with their ingeniously constructed routes traversing picturesque, forested and rugged country. Built in the era of the horse and cart, when railways had a monopoly over the conveyance of freight and passenger alike, the narrow gauge lines served their purpose, before being rapidly overtaken by road transport.  With their toy‐like appearance, the little trains were beloved by children, and this factor was to bring about their salvation. Through the valiant actions of a few spirited individuals, Victoria's narrow gauge heritage lives on, with the re‐born Gembrook and Walhalla lines among the most revered and admired railways in Australia.    The Narrow Gauge is a comprehensive coffee table style book, a fitting salute to a fascinating chapter in Victoria's history ‐  the story of four character‐filled railways, from their inception, through to present day operations and relics.

A Railway to Cudgewa

The spectacular mountain railway from Wodonga to Cudgewa in north eastern Victoria was one of Australia's truly fascinating branch lines, and the most challenging to operate on the Victorian Railways. It was a railway of scenic splendour, famous for its towering wooden bridges, notoriously steep grades, Hereford cattle and K class steam locomotives.   This lavishly illustrated publication includes over 100 colour and B&W photographs, and tells the story of the railway through the memories of Cudgewa railway enginemen, station masters, bridge gangers, cattle drovers and local residents. Crucial aspects of the line's history are also covered, including 'Tallangatta ‐ The Town that Moved', the Bonegilla Migrant Reception Centre, the Snowy Mountains Hydro‐Electric Scheme, and harrowing accounts of the two 1964 runaway train wrecks.

Life on the Victorian Railways

The Victorian Railways of old was far more than just a transport business ‐ it was a great railway family, where employees were treated as valued members of the organisation.  Life on the Victorian Railways explores a bygone era, through the recollections and humorous stories of a selection of railwaymen who performed a variety of roles, such as Lad Labourer, Junior Clerk, Engine Cleaner, Steam Fitter, Train Guard, Passenger Train Conductor, Ticket Examiner, Station Master, Train Controller and District Superintendent. From the grimy North Melbourne Locomotive Depot to the glamorous Southern Aurora express train, dedicated railwaymen and women across the state carried out their often unseen duties, and contributed to the day‐to‐day operations of the grand, traditional old 'VR' ‐ that proud institution now consigned to the pages of history.

A Spacious Life

'Meditation and mindfulness are tools for working with the mind, but where they have led me is to a blossoming of the heart.'

What does a spiritual seeker look like? Could you pick one in a lineup? If you said yes, chances are you weren’t imagining this meditating model.

Born in Sydney, Australia, Narissa Doumani grew up well loved, well educated, and (reasonably) well dressed, but for years grappled with what she admits is 'the ultimate first world problem': how to be truly, deeply happy in any lasting way. In this intimate memoir, she explores the creative process, traverses the heights of romantic love and the despair of self‐doubt, and comes face to face with her own fragile mortality. But it’s in a cave in a Thai forest, where she meets the Buddhist yogi who will become her spiritual guide, that she learns to unravel the messy states of mind and heart that had kept her from living a spacious life ‐ and thereby begins to uncover the happiness, meaning, and connection for which she always yearned.

A Spacious Life is a heart‐warming, honest, and at times surprisingly humorous look into the quest for meaning beyond materialism ‐ and its relevance as an essential condition for well‐ being and fulfillment within modern‐day life.

Little Bit Different

This story is an inspirational account of a young boy growing up in Melbourne during the 1950s…It tells how he escaped from a traumatic home life with a limited education, how he rode a bicycle 33 km a day to and from his first job and how he eventually married and set up a successful business working from home with the world at his feet.Be with him as he takes to bushwalking, not for the exercise or the challenge but to escape, to find solace and maybe friends away from his toxic home environment. Despite the best efforts of a caring and loving mother, see how his tyrannical father transforms an innocent, sensitive and artistic little boy into a rampantly cynical and screwed up adult with serious personal issues.Be amazed as Rick manages to overcome it all without taking to drink or drugs, get married, have children, set up a successful business and achieve what he thought was the perfect lifestyle.Follow the journey as he loses it all; his wife and family, his business and his dignity. And at age 43, how he found himself in the dole queue living his worst nightmare away from family and without friends or money.Watch as Rick against the odds slowly climbs from the abyss to finally succeed in ticking off most of the items currently on his bucket list. Rick hopes his experiences will inspire fellow baby‐boomers and remind them that there but for the grace of God go all of us.This story includes historical photographs, the author’s original watercolour painting and his hand drawn map.

This memoir could easily be compared to a modern version of ‘A Fortunate Life’ by Albert Facey. Rick Anderson caught me unawares with his prosaic and matter of fact style of writing about an ordinary bloke’s life story…entertaining, funny, sad and typically Aussie.—John Morrow’s Pick of the Week

A Migrant’s Hopeful Dawn

Sotirios ‘Sam’ Manolopoulos migrated to Australia in 1955 after a childhood in western Greece marred by poverty and war. Though Sam arrived in his adopted nation Australia with little more than the clothes on his back, he began his odyssey possessing something far more valuable. Sam left Greece with unyielding determination and faith, with great hope for his future and with his father’s advice in mind: ‘The tastiest bread is that which is made from the sweat of honourable toil.’

In pursuing his dreams, Sam travelled across Australia, from the often hostile terrain of the Outback to the lonely hills of the Dividing Range, and came to know his new home country intimately.

Sam is one of Australia’s dedicated but anonymous pioneers. He has helped build Australia, and in doing so has forged the sort of connections that last a lifetime. His story, full of hard-earned wisdom and laconic humour, mirrors the story of any migrant yet is his own. You will find his tale engaging, inspiring and thought‐provoking.

About the AuthorSotirios ‘Sam’ Manolopoulos was born and raised in a small village in Greece. He migrated to Australia in 1955 and embarked on a road that brought success and ultimately the opportunity to contribute back to his beloved Australia.

Letter To My Loved Ones

This collection of poems and letters was written to give hope to those struggling with life and to those who personally or professionally care for them. Together they tell the short story of one woman underpinned by the fierce faith of her strong willed child, who humbly followed her Sovereign God to climb her mountain of adversity. The summit reached the view now enjoyed with Him. From this vantage point her life with God has become like fallen autumn leaves littering the path. Rather than ruing the need to clean up, again! She can now relax in Him; let it be; give thanks for the gift of the messy and marvel at the beauty in it.

This book would appeal to those interested in the story of honest struggle. Neither sensationalising nor avoiding the reality of violence toward the child it outlines the profound affect this violence can then have; as the person goes on to live their life. Be it in the context of work; married life; community or accessing medical care, the life challenges for the adult recovering from childhood trauma can be great. Though a process to be worked over the lifetime hope for this woman was found in the Triune God of the Christian faith in whom she has found her freedom.

What a beautiful work ‐ a work of love and grace and forgiveness ‐ full of faith. It would be trite to commend Cathie's  courage and honesty in writing ‐ but in doing so she is true to herself. Her profound experiences of suffering, however, are offered to all of us as a gift ‐ one which enriches and inspires. - Ruth Redpath.

Thank you Cathie for your courage in sharing. I do pray it will give me more sensitivity as it has given me some understanding of the trauma and the results of the trauma. - Barbara Martin. Retired Doctor.

James Pascoe Fawkner arrived in Port Phillip more than thirty years before he was to become one of the founders of the city of Melbourne.In April 1803, aged ten, he sailed from England  with his parents on a British government expedition to establish a colony on Bass Strait.Fawkner's father was one of 300 convicts who were transported on HMS Calcutta and landed at Sullivan Bay near present‐day Sorrento in October that year.The settlement was short‐lived, and the colonists, led by Lieutenant governor David Collins, moved to Van Diemen's Land, where Collins founded Hobart Town and where Fawkner remained until 1835 when he returned to Port Phillip and settled on the Yarra.Fawkner's reminiscences of the Sullivan Bay camp were written in his final years. Sometimes gossipy and judgemental, they nevertheless form a unique account of the beginnings of European settlement in Victoria and Tasmania.

The Crocodile Hotel

The Crocodile Hotel is the first novel by celebrated Aboriginal playwright Juile Janson.

This story strikes deep into Australia's heart. An epic story of a young Aboriginal single mother's awakening of identity and compassion in a remote Northern Territory community in 1976. This land holds a terrible secret of immense proportions, the earth is red with the memory. The old people are living witnesses to the past with all its misery and need for survival.

Jane Reynolds is swept up in a year of wonders, as she negotiates her place between the black and white societies. She finds love with two charismatic men and meets traditional Aboriginal elders who change her life forever. Jane fights alongside the Lanniwah for land rights and finds respect and redemption for herself.

The great granddaughter of a Darug Hawkesbury river Aboriginal woman, Jane takes a journey to recognise her identity and is drawn into the world of race relations in the face of 1970s prejudice and discrimination. She is a teacher from Sydney, and begins a position on the remote cattle property, Harrison Station, south of Arnhem Land. Jane arrives with her five-year-old son Aaron, but she is unmarried and this is a problem amongst conservative rural folk. There are confrontations with the racist cattle station boss, Hubert Barkley and his wife Edie, but Jane is entangled in their lives.

The caravan school has fifty-two traditional Aboriginal children and no one can read or write. Another teacher arrives and Jane is swept up in a love affair with the charismatic Orlando. The relationship crashes as sex and jealousy and other women impact on their love. As time passes Jane is drawn to the handsome David Yaniwuy, a young Aboriginal Teaching Assistant.

Harrison Station is a lonely place, and Jane is sustained by her friendship with the Lanniwah children and grows in Aboriginal spiritual awareness through her relationships with Old Lucy and the headman, Old Pelican.

The predominant theme is the negotiation of identity and social status for a woman, born between cultures, who wants to overcome her 'double stain, double shame', and claim a legitimate place for herself and establish a sense of belonging. There is grim humour powerful understatement. Jane is sexual, courageous and passionate and she is swept up in a tempestuous story of the Northern Territory that reveals the bloody history of the country and the Lanniwah people's spiritual magic realism in their cultural landscape. This story may challenge the way you think about Australia's history.

How far would you go to protect a secret? How far would you go to expose a lie? Will Fletcher seems to have it all - perfect job, perfect life. Then in one act of extreme violence, his world is turned upside down. A bungled assassination attempt on a London street uncovers a disturbing conspiracy fuelled by organised crime and political ambition. Now, Will finds himself on the run, pursued by a dangerous enemy who will stop at nothing to protect his employer's past. The only way to stop the chain of events is to follow a trail of clues that lead to the heart of British politics. With the date for the UK General Election only days away and the killers closing in, Will is running out of time to deliver his own version of vigilante justice and expose the corruption. As the web of lies and deceit unravels, Will knows the answer's out there. All he has to do is look closer. Everyone has secrets. Everyone lies.

The Eden EffectIf you want to find out, come to the small Victorian town of Eden. Here you will meet Martin Brophy, who carries with him the scars of a horrific emotional trauma suffered in childhood.As a consequence of his experience, Martin has shielded himself from the media and has come to the conclusion that overexposure to the news, mostly bad news, may be doing people generally,more harm than good. Martin comes in to an unexpected inheritance which provides him with the financial means to test out his theory.Martin is joined by Arthur Fromm, a disgraced former accountant, down on his luck and sent to Eden as part of the Work for the Dole Scheme.The two men form a close bond and with Martin's money and Arthur's expertise, they set up a social experiment in Eden to test Martin's hypothesis.The result of this experiment becomes known as 'The Eden Effect'. Its ramifications reverberate around the world and put Martin against the might of global media, with devastating results.One man can change the world.

Gold StandardDr Andrew Marshall returns to Melbourne's prestigious Prince Charles Hospital after three years in London.

While Andrew was away,Dr Jeffrey Harris, Head of Department and Andrew's mentor, had made a ground breaking discovery. He had found a cure for a deadly form of brain cancer. This discovery has put the department and the hospital on the world map.

Andrew is excited to take up his new position. He is also apprehensive as he will be working along side his former partner, Lisa Wallace, whom he abandoned to further his career in London.

Soon after starting work, Andrew discovers anomalies in some of the patients' medical records. Dismissing these at first, he eventually becomes concerned that Dr Harris' actions in his quest for the cancer cure may have been unethical and even illegal.

Andrew finds himself compelled to search for the truth, even if the consequences could be disastrous for the department and ruin his mentor.

Signs of Flight

The stories in this collection are funny, charming and yet poignant at the same time.

Set in 1940s Melbourne our intermediary, Connie, a socially marginal and observant little girl, takes in events both every day and sensational without full understanding.

The lack of communication between adult and child, except to reprimand, renders the adult world bemusing and untrustworthy. When Connie is innocent of wrongdoing, when she is bullied or even touched inappropriately she knows the futility of defending herself. She tries at times to defend others equally powerless in the prevailing narrow social structure.

At the same time, without iPad or iPod, or undue adult protection or interest in her private world, she is free to explore her neighbourhood and to develop her own imaginative world. Her chivalrous adventures as Lady Fuchsia sit oddly with the glowing neon girls of her dreams, who awaken in her a desire for a less insular, more glamorous life.

Easy to read and easy to dip into, Signs of Flight evokes a past when Australian suburban society pictures itself as a stable self‐contained world, but at the same time the signs of its permeability are clearly visible.

About the AuthorOn retirement, Catherine Skipper returned to university to pursue cinema studies. She reinvented herself as a reviewer of film, drama and most recently, of dance, as well as occasional curator of art exhibitions. Although she moved to Sydney to live with her daughter four years ago, Melbourne remains the city of her dreams.

We All Have Secrets

Six women, all over fifty, have met each month for eight years to discuss books they’ve read. Now they’ve had enough of chick lit and fantasy and are writing their own book. When Lucy, the first to say “Ten Years Ago I...” reveals previously hidden secrets, the others feel free to be as honest when they tell their own stories: of lovers, swingers, death and divorce.The reactions to the sexual adventures revealed by some of the group illustrate the personalities of the members, and events during the year change the fixed ideas of some of the characters.As problems arise during the year of the stories, the closeness that develops because of the revelations helps the women to deal with these challenges, and become strong. Without formal planning, they are there for each other, to provide whatever is needed…

About the AuthorElsie Bradley started writing when she stopped working full time.During the four years she spent studying for the Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing she wrote a number of pieces, until We All Have Secrets took over.She never obtained her Diploma, although the knowledge she gained has proven invaluable, and she still workshops with several of her former classmates.She has a variety of unusual friends, and has woven together their experiences and her own imagination to produce We All Have Secrets.Elsie lives in Melbourne and is working on her second novel.

Feet of Wax

1914‐1918: The Eastern FrontInspired by true events, its action moving from the idyllic countryside ot Lithuania to St Petersburg, Warsaw, Berlin and New York, Feet of Wax depicts the separation and trials of two young people and their families during World War 1.Entrusted with the care of her frail father and taking refuge with a wealthy uncle in St Petersberg, Wanda falls in love with George, a radical student from Warsaw. Conscripted into the tsarist infantry, George is caught up in revolutionary currents at the front, while Wanda witnesses a city turning from fashionable glitter to peaceful protest, then revolution, as the effects of war and hunger set in.When the German front advances through Polish and Lithuanian lands, Russia's Empire is in meltdown. Lenin, the leader of the Bolsheviks, and Pilsudski, the leader of the Poles, are poised to make their mark on history. Wanda and George are forced to decide: become Bolsheviks, or flee through a landscape ravaged by war.

About the AuthorJoanna Hempel ‐ formerly one of Australia's leading playwrights for young people ‐ brings her skills as a dramatist to Feet of Wax, a novel informed by family journals. Based on her grandparents' lives during the disintergration of the Russian Empire and the re‐birth of Poland, it reveals Eastern Europe as it changes forever.

The characters peopling Hempel's narrative are dear to her and become real for us in a different way to those in other fiction. Knowing they are based on her own family history gives added meaning to the passionate engagement (she) puts into bringing them back to life. - Alison Richards, writer, theatre lecturer, Melbourne

Our Australian Gardens

The Southern Highlands in New South Wales is renowned for superb gardens, and three of the best are featured ‐filmed in early autumn. Presenter Eamonn Katter joins the owners and others who've contributed to the gardens' success, and reveals what makes each garden so special.

RED COW FARM embraces cultural diversity displayed in several distinct garden rooms including Abbess' and Monastery gardens. Romantic and spiritual, formal areas lead to wilderness ‐ all with touches of whimsy.

PRITTLEWELL is an elegant garden resulting from two decades of devotion from a botanical artist and her husband. Areas of wide‐open spaces are a foil for intimate, detailed pockets such as a Japanese garden and pavilion studio.

LEYLANDAGREEN has the hallmarks of professional design, which the current owners sought when they wished to add major features such as a swimming pool and tennis court while retaining some pleasing elements they'd inherited.

What does it mean to be a great cook?  What does it take to be an owner & chef?   Scott Pickett, owner‐chef of two celebrated Melbourne restaurants, began his career at the age of 14 in a winery restaurant and did his apprenticeship with two notable Adelaide chefs. He has learnt his craft with some of the greats ‐ Phil Howard of The Square in London, Philippe Mouchel in Melbourne.   A Cook's Story tells of a life that combines a passion for food with the art and crafts of cooking. It's an open and sometimes confronting account of dramas in the kitchen, the roller‐coaster of opening one restaurant, the demands of opening a second, the pleasures and challenges of competition and success.   Noted chef and owner Scott Pickett worked with respected food writer Rita Erlich to tell his story.

All in the context of being carefully analysed and clinically appropriate. No compromise on taste or safety. Australia's leading aged care chef, Peter Morgan-Jones, has prepared innovative recipes which draw on his extensive international experience, with one recipe even inspired by cooking for a 'young prince' at Highgrove House. The Road to QV

This book is the celebration of three distinctive characters, thrown together by fate to create a restaurant nobody believed in. Together with a collection of recipes collated from the kitchens of both Red Spice Road restaurants and the team of talent therein, this book shares the highs and lows of operating a restaurant in a city that loves its restaurants - Melbourne. The book is edited by someone who could only be described as Melbourne food press royalty Rita Erlich, who effortlessly brings a sense of order to the words. Rita's long experience includes longterm co-editing of The Age Good Food Guide, editing magazines, writing columns, demonstrating and lecturing, and writing books, most recently Melbourne by Menu: the story of Melbourne's restaurant revolution. The photographs are beautifully shot by Juanita McCleary - a very dear friend of the restaurants and a very patient lady. Her eye for detail and her ability to shoot some sixteen recipes in a short day has made her contribution to this book extremelywelcome, and tantamount to its success. We hope you find this story as enjoyable to read as it was for us to write and share.

Blending the Cultures

Tanya Bartolini grew up in the lushness of Australia's tropical north Queensland. Childhood memories are of simple times: swimming and fishing with her brothers in the Great Barrier Reef and coastal estuaries; of family gatherings full of stories and food...and of arguments with friends over whose Nonna made the best pasta sauce.  Tanya represents a generation of Italo‐Australians who, despite living 15000 kilometres from the home country of grandparents, have embraced the culinary traditions of their heritage with gusto. Family and food are part of her DNA; as essential to her being as oxygen. The blending of cultures is more than a family history. It's a sharing of precious family recipes that add to Australia's gastronomic mix and encourage families and friends to gather, cook and share a meal together, creating memorable moments along the way.
