RAA GOES BIG WITH COUNTRY MUSIC CONCERT IN BATESVILLEJohn Michael Montgomery will entertain country music fans on September 13th at The Plex ballfields in Batesville. Local folk-rock duo, Hayden Kaye, are set to open.

The Rural Alliance for the Arts wanted to do something BIG to kick-off their 2014-15 entertainment season, and what’s bigger in Southeastern Indiana than country music? So, on Saturday September 13th John Michael Montgomery will be gracing a Batesville outdoor stage at The Plex (ball field) at 8 p.m, with opening act, Hayden Kaye, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Even if you’re not immediately sure who John Michael is, or even a country music aficionado, as soon as you hear his songs you’re likely to know them. They include “Life’s A Dance,” “I Swear,” “I Can Love You Like That,” “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident),” and more recently “Letters from Home.” Since the early 90’s he has sold 18 million albums,

had 36 hit singles and 15 number one songs.

The idea of bringing John Michael to Batesville came from RAA incoming Vice-President Jeff Pawlik, “When the board said they wanted to go big, I decided to run with it. I am not only a huge country music fan, but also a big fan of John Michael Montgomery’s.

“I knew that he lived not too far from here in Kentucky, so I gave his manager a call. Sure enough John Michael had a date available and

wanted to come.” John Michael believes in the RAA cause and even made

some concessions to help make it h a p p e n . “ E v e n w i t h h i s concessions, it still meant a big commitment from the RAA,” said Paw l i k . Paw l i k spoke w i t h

incoming RAA president Regina Siefert who loved the idea. Together

they made a proposal to the RAA board early this year, it was passed, and a contract was signed.

“We are so excited to be able to bring such a big name in country music to Batesville,” says Siefert. “We see it as a great opportunity to showcase Batesville in the region and to make an economic impact on area businesses. We knew this concert was going to be a big undertaking, and there are always more details than you anticipate. That is why we are so grateful to the Batesville community. They see the value in this concert too, and everyone has really stepped up to help make this happen,” added Siefert.

WRBI and BatesvilleOnline.com are providing all of the advertising in-kind. The City of Batesville is donating Belterra funds to support technology rental for sound and lighting. Local and state police will donate their time for security detail and traffic flow. Local fireman and county Emergency Management Agency (EMA) will provide an emergency hub and weather watching. Batesville fireman will take care of the licensing and selling of beer. The Batesville soccer league and Park and Recreation board will guide parking cars around their fields and city. The baseball league will run food concessions and the City of Batesville will provide the stage and tents. After all the fun and music, the Boy Scouts will come in to clean up. Several area businesses have also donated funds in support of the John Michael concert: Batesville Tool & Die, Crum Trucking, Rockwood Foundation, and Voldico Insurance.

“The teamwork and support are amazing. So gather up your lawn chairs or picnic blanket on September 13th and come on and enjoy a great night of music and fun,” said Pawlik. “And, you’ll get to see what Batesville can do.”

“Don’t wait to buy your tickets!” Siefert said. “We expect this concert to sell out early, and you don’t want to miss it.

Thanks to many for auction success

The 24th annual RAA Art . . .Etc. Auction, “Art & Sole”, was held May 3rd in a new location: Walhill Farm. “A sincere thank you to Peter Hillenbrand and the staff of Walhill, who were incredibly generous with their facility and their time. They were a key factor in the success of our event.” notes RAA Executive Director Joan Kuhlman.

Also, special thanks to three signature sponsors – Forethought Financial Group, Hill-Rom Services, and Hillenbrand, Inc. – for their generous support of this event.

The art auction is the RAA’s major fundraiser, and crucial to the year’s programming for the schools and the community. RAA depends on the auction for nearly 60% of its budget. The rest comes from grants, memberships, memorials, ticket sales and donations.

This year’s very successful auction grossed over $51,000, with net proceeds after expenses of $39,900, allowing RAA to fund its many programs for another year.

In addition to Kuhlman, the auction was chaired by RAA board members Natasha Kellerman and Jeff Pawlik. Roger Huff once again donated his auctioneer services. Jeff Kuehl, current Chairman of the Indiana Coalition of the Arts, served as Emcee. Over 200 businesses and individuals donated items or funds. There were 172 attendees who enjoyed the evening of delicious food and wine, entertainment, and spirited bidding. Dozens of volunteers worked countless hours beginning in January with invitation design through clean up on May 4th.

The RAA would like to thank everyone who donated, volunteered, assisted, attended, or in any way added to the success of this event.

‘Doodle’ delights audience “Yankee Doodle” was a patriotic familiar musical offered this summer by the Rural

Alliance for the Arts. Every other summer the RAA offers an opportunity for the community to experience musical theater, whether it’s to be a cast member or to enjoy it as an audience member. The 1950s set musical was directed by Tara Tuttle and produced by Pam Cope.

One of the long-standing programs the RAA sponsors is the Young Artist S h o w c a s e , a p r o g r a m t h a t recognizes students

in 6th through 12th grade who excel in the

areas of art, music, writing, dance and drama.

Professional judges are enlisted to judge the entries in each discipline, and trophies and ribbons are awarded to the winners at each school’s end of the year awards program along with the sports and academic awards that are traditionally given by the schools. This program fills a gap in local awards programs, showing students that they can be rewarded for excellence in the arts and creates an incentive for students to achieve excellence. This year, the program was chaired by Vonni Williamson. The program chair assists coordinators for each discipline, as they line up judges, venues and set calendars for each event. She also makes sure there is good communication with the schools and local art educators to allow as many young artists as possible to participate in the program. “This program is a great way to recognize a student's creative excellence. We want to encourage them in these disciplines, and for some, a little recognition goes a long way, giving them confidence to pursue the arts,” she said.

Artists judged for their workThe Rural Alliance for the Arts annual

Community Art Show was held as part of the three day Batesville Music and Arts Festival June 18-20.

Seventeen local adul t ar t is ts submitted original work in three categories for judging and the chance to win cash prizes. Art work could be viewed from the picture window of the downtown Batesvil le Community Church building on George Street. Art was on display for the month of June.

First place winners received $100, 2nd place $75, third place, $50 and best of show $100. Carmen Nunlist won the best of show category for her quilt entitled “Enchanted Cottage,” and

she also won the People’s Choice award, which was voted on by the public during the reception. Over 120 people voted on their favorite.

Participants in the art show besides those in the photo were: Sandy Zeigler, Kerri Kase, Sara Mustaine, Rose Meyer, Thomas Geis, all of Batesville, Susan Singh of Osgood and Debi Black of Milan.

The RAA offers the art show as a way to encourage art expression as well as get feedback, and has been hosting the show for many years. The show was chaired by Connie Rozman. For next year, a survey of past participants is being considered.

Rockwood Memorial Due to the generosity of donors honoring the memory of Fred. W. Rockwood, the RAA has received a total of $8,635 in memorial gifts. These gifts will allow our organization to continue enrichment instruction in visual art, music, drama, dance and creative writing in our area schools; as well as provide opportunities for community members to participate in and enjoy quality arts programing.

Fred Rockwood was a true champion for The Arts. He will be missed by our organization and community. We are sincerely thankful to all who choose to honor him with a gift to the RAA.

41st Batesville Music and Arts Festival

The mayor wasn’t the vocalist (as it may seem from the picture at left!), but Rick Fledderman welcomed the crowd for the annual Batesville Music and Arts Festival on the first day of the festival at L iber ty Park . Weather appeared threatening an hour or so before the concert, but fortunately, the storm and rain passed over Batesville so all remained dry at the outdoor show.

The crowd was a little down for the concert in the park this year, but those who attended enjoyed the atmosphere of sitting outside, dining on pies from the Daughters of Isabella and listening to mus ic by the Ind ianapo l i s Jazz Orchestra.

On Thursday, the second day of the Batesville Music and arts Festival, just after the RAA Community Art Show and reception, many enjoyed a downtown concert by the the band “Mother Grove,” a 5-piece Celtic rock band from Indianapolis (below). The threatening dark clouds that evening may have deterred some concert-goers for the second night of the festival. WRBI put on the Colgate Country Music Showdown Friday night and 15 year old Samantha Voegele of Noblesville, granddaughter of Batesville’s Louella Voegele won the contest. She advances to the state finals at the state fair in August. Kent Hiltz of New Point finished second in the competition. Other singers that took part in the showdown was Megan Hoffman, Guilford; Christopher Bischoff, West Harrison; Alyssa Williams, Connersville; Marissa Fullenkamp, Batesville; and Jessie Strassell of Dillsboro.

Former Prairie Fire actor now founder of theater

“RAA gave theater founder his start” was the headline in the July 11 issue of The Herald Tribune. The article featured John Leo Muething, the youngest of Dr. Steve and Meg Muething’s children, formerly of Batesville, attributing his start in theater to the RAA’s Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre. He was just a kid when he appeared in “Annie Get Your Gun,” but he continued with more local productions, and many other plays once his family moved to Cincinnati. The Muethings were active in RAA productions and strong supporters.

Today, the 22 year old is founder and artistic director of Stone on a Walk Theatre (www.stoneonawalk.com) in Over-the-Rhine in Cincinnati. He graduated in

2013 from Durham University in England with a degree in physics, but returned to the states to pursue directing plays. He found few wanted to give him experience, so he created his own opportunity, and founded this new theater in Cincinnati.

This summer his newly found theater is producing one hour, enjoyable shows, for a $10 ticket, as a way to entice a different audience to become theater-goers, he said in the article. The former St. Louis student also wants to create a p la t fo rm fo r young a r t i s ts to get experience, possibly to go on to bigger things.

Their next play is called “Repertory Theatre”, which he says is one of the funniest plays he has ever seen. Muething says his biggest challenge with his new a r ts bus iness i s fundra is ing , and encou rages anyone to dona te to

AROUND TOWN Plan to attend annual meeting on August 26

RAA members and the public are invited to the annual meeting of the Rural Alliance for the Arts. It will be held at the Batesville Memorial Public Library beginning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

The board of directors slate is voted on by those attending the meeting, and members will be introduced. Also, Barb Greene will present the treasurer’s report for the past year, followed by the announcement of the 2014-15 RAA programming by Vice President Regina Siefert.

TJ Greene, president, will also give an overview of the year for RAA. A highlight of the program will be the awards, recognizing the Volunteer of the Year, President’s Award, Business of the Year, and Arts in Education recipients.

Make sure you mark the date on your calendar, and be the first to renew your membership!

Nothing like show business!"There's no business like show business," and the RAA

couldn't agree more. However, the RAA Theater Committee is looking to reorganize and grow theater in Batesville.

If you have building and design experience, would like to do some acting, have organizational skills, or just want to meet some new people, this is the group for you.

The group will meet a couple of times a year to discuss plays and scripts, to staff shows, and to discuss how to expand community theater in Batesville.

If you are interested contact Chris Ault, the RAA theater chairperson at 934 5028 or [email protected], or RAA executive director Joan Kuhlman at 933 0355.

Dance Studio Becomes Non-ProfitLydia Woodward, owner of The Dance Studio, is pleased

to announce a new name and status for the school. Southeastern Indiana Dance, Inc. is a non-profit corporation. “We draw students from all over southeastern Indiana, so the name change seemed appropriate. Being a non-profit will open more doors to help us grow even more,” Woodward stated.

The five member board of directors includes Barney Sing, President, Michelle Voss, Vice President, Kristen Obermeyer, Secretary, Temple Hite-Gordon, and Charlie Zimmerman. Sing remarked, “The studio has done very well so far, and the board will be very active in taking it to the next level. We’re all very excited about the new name and status!”

Southeastern Indiana Dance, located in downtown Batesville, will begin its fall session the week of August 11, 2014 offering several new classes. For more information, please contact Lydia Woodward at 812-932-2046.

Decorations dealPaper lanterns used at the 2014 art auction are for sale.

The pink, yellow, and peach lanterns have wire inserts and are group priced at $120.  There are 15 large, 30 medium and 55 small. (See photo of decorations on page 4).   Contact Joan Kuhlman at 812-933-0355 or [email protected] for more information.

Theater Workshop visited Batesville. After studying under two professional theater directors for a week in July, a cast of 75 local children presented “Beauty and the Beast”. Funding from the Indiana Arts Commissions and the Columbus Area Arts Council made this production possible.

Plans are already underway to bring Prairie Fire Children’s Theater back to Batesville in July 2015 for a production of “Jack and the Beanstalk.”
