Queen of All Saints Elevated to the Dignity of a Basilica

March 26, 1962

The Dignity of a Basilica

Join us Sunday, March 25 at 3:00 p.m. as we kick off our golden anniversary year of Queen of All Saints’ elevation to a Basilica by

Pope John XXIII with a special presentation on the beautiful and magnificent structure that is Queen of All Saints Basilica.

Dr. Denis McNamara of the Liturgical Institute of Mundelein Seminary offers a fascinating look at the spirituality and theology of the architecture and artifacts of

the Basilica.

The afternoon will also include a presentation by Dr. Ken Sotak on the Basilica Organ, as well as time to tour the Basilica.

The Dignity of a Basilica promises to be an enriching and fulfilling afternoon for the entire family.

Dr. Denis McNamara, an architectural historian who specializes in American Church Architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries, holds a BA in History of Art from Yale University and a PhD. in Architectural History from the University of Virginia. He has written and lectured widely on the history and theology of ecclesiastical architecture, and is the author of the book Heavenly City: The Architectural Tradition of Catholic Chicago and Catholic Church Architecture and the Spirit of the Liturgy. He is currently assistant director and faculty member at the Liturgical Institute of the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

Religious Education News At the start of the RE year, our 6th grade students planted tulip bulbs as part of their study of creation. Due to the mild winter, these bulbs are now sprouting in front of the Benedict Center, hoping they remain a living reminder of the faith shared this year is taking on deeper roots. Classes will meet this week studying Holy Week and the Triduum. This is setting a foundation for our students’ understanding of our highest holy days. This week’s “Drop in the Bucket” action will follow the RCIA gospel readings, i.e. the cure of the blind man. Students are asked conserve water by taking shorter showers or shallower baths. Each time they do this they are asked to make a drop in the bucket donation for a well in the Philippines. 6th Grade Family Mass Our 6th grade families will be leading us at the 9:30 Mass. This is the annual “Shoe Box” Mass. Toiletries are collected and distributed to various venues who are in need of these items. Let us all be reminded of what we take these simple things for granted.

Rice & Broth Program

In partnership with QASPA and the Family Service Ministry, Queen of All Saints students marked the beginning of Lent with the annual Rice and Broth

Lunch and fundraising program. In addition to partaking in a modest

lunch of rice and broth on Ash Wednesday, the

children raised money for the Albany Park

Food Pantry. Designed to teach humanity through

sacrifice, the effort raised $1,500.

The program is one of many QAS offers throughout the year to reinforce the school’s commitment to community service. If you are interested in learning more about Queen of All Saints, please call the school at 773.736.0567.
