i) Shri. V. M. Gokhale - Presidentii) Shri. V. V. Gandhe - Joint Secretaryiii) Shri. D. A. Kulkarni - Treasurer

For the post of Secretary, no nominations were received despite efforts made by the Presidentand other office bearers.

In these circumstances, in consultation with the President, Shri. Rabade suggested that thepresent Secretary should continue to work for next two years subject to the approval of the House. This was approved by the House unanimously and accordingly Shri. Rabade announced the name ofShri. R. N. Lalingkar as Secretary. The audience responded to the decision of the election officerwith loud applause.

Shri.Rabade sincerely expressed his expectation that some enterprising and self-motivatedmembers would come forward to share the burden of Shri. Lalinkar and provide him the necessaryrelief. September 2012 E SAMVADcannot do justice to his role and hence did not submit his nomination. Ours is a growing organizationwhere the number of members and the corresponding work load are increasing & naturally members'expectations from the Association are also on the increase. The need of the hour is more and morevolunteers who would take up different tasks / responsibilities voluntarily. He hoped that there would bepositive response from the members to his appeal for assistance. He also thanked all those whoregularly visit office & offer him help.Agenda Item No.7 :- Report of the Managing Committee for the year 2011 - 2012 to be read, discussed and adopted :

The aforesaid report which was published in 'Samved' of June 2012 was tabled by Shri. Lalingkarfor its adoption by the House. Shri. Dandekar pointed out a small error which was duly noted by theSecretary. The House then approved the report unanimously.

Shri. Lalingkar then read out five resolutions which he considered should be passed by theHouse. The House passed all the resolutions unanimously. These have been given in the Annexure.

Thereafter, Shri. B. G. Dandekar spoke about our case in the Supreme Court. In the beginning,he explained that fighting a case in Supreme Court is a very expensive proposition. On the day whenthe case is heard, the expenditure in the form of Counsel's and Advocates' fees is around Rs. 10Lakhs. The Federation has estimated that the Court case would cost us Rs. 50 to 70 Lakhs. If eachpensioner contributed Rs. 100/- towards the above cost, the entire cost could be easily met. While ourAssociation was asked to donate to the Federation Rs. 10 Lakhs as our share of the expenditure, wecollected Rs. 16 Lakhs for the purpose. The case was filed in April 2011, the preparation for which wasgoing on at hectic speed for over six months prior to that, and it has come up for final hearing stage inAugust 12 which in itself is no small accomplishment; of course, we had to submit to the Court that alarge number of aged pensioners leave this world every year and furnished them a statement showingthe number of pensioners who died in one year period prior to July 12. This piece of informationperhaps moved the Court and it fixed an early date for final hearing. The Court may take few months toannounce its judgment and we hope to get favourable decision.

At this stage, Shri. Dandekar became emotional and expressed that this AGM would mostly belast one he attended and if at all he attended the next meeting, he would sit in the audience and not onthe dias. Having worked in the Association for almost 25 years and having undergone operations onboth the eyes for replacement of cornea and considering the age-related health problems he is sufferingfrom, he would like to retire and look after his family, which aspect got sidetracked all these years. Heextended his heartfelt thanks and bid good-bye to all. As usual, he requested all the members todonate their eyes.

The Secretary announced the lunch break and reminded the audience to reassemble after onehour for the Pensioners Meet.

After lunch break, the Bank's Pensioners' meet was conducted. Shri. Waghmare, Desk Officer(H.R.) Zonal office, Pune invited office - bearers of the pensioners' Association and the Bank's dignitarieson the dias. Shri. Lalingkar welcomed the Bank officials and Shri. September 2012 E SAMVAD

Seeing the beautiful life around youDinesh was displeased, in fact, disappointed when he received the order of posting as Area

Manager at the Eastern Region of the bank. For the last five years he had worked at key departmentsnamely Planning, International Banking and Credit Dispersal at the head office of the bank receivimgall along good reports from his seniors. It was, therefore natural for him to expect posting at any of theeight foreign branches of the bank. Of course, he knew that a number of factors weighed with the topmanagement while awarding foreign posting.

In the last fifteen years the bank has rapidly expanded businesswise as also added to the branchnetwork. Basically it had better presence at Eastern, Central and Western regions of Western andCentral states of the country. In the same period it had opened eight foreign branches. Displeasedthough he was, Dinesh knew that there was no way to represent about his not getting foreign posting.

Before leaving for the regional office of the Eastern region, Dinesh called upon the GeneralManager-in-charge of the Eastern region. He had earlier worked under him (the GM). The GeneralManager was well mannered, suave and knowledgeable. Besides, he had worked as RegionalManager of the Eastern Region. He assured Dinesh that the Eastern Region was important region forthe bank. It covered agriculture, industry, forest and mining. The regional office was located at majorurban centre of the country. Dinesh would have no difficulty about housing, good colleges and schoolsand the sports facilities at the regional centre. A stint at the regional centre away from the head officewas necessary for greater exposure and experience. Besides wishing Dinesh good luck, he suggestedto Dinesh that for greater exposure he need visit as many branches under his charge. That will givehim necessary feedback about customers, staff attitudes and behavior pattern, working conditions atbranches and in general topography of the area.

In his earlier career Dinesh had worked at medium and large size branches only. His school andcollege education was only at metropolitan centre. Dinesh was very comfortable playing cricket andtable tennis. These attributes helped him to easily get along with people.

Like a good scholar Dinesh carefully scanned each and every branch covered by his area, theindustrial and agricultural scenario of the area and also the political sensitivity of the area. With hishomework done methodically and studiously Dinesh found it easy to get along with the staff at theregional office and interact with customers and the staff at the branches. He soon realized that hisknowledge (somewhat bookish though) of the customers and the staff limited. The staff whether clericalor officers and the branch managers were not all out for promotion or increase in pay packects. Thecustomers too did not have only profit motive. They all had other interests such as music, sports, yogaand service to poorer layer of the society. These things Dinesh realized gradually but with an openmind.

At one of a medium sized branch a clerk who had put in fifteen years of service and had missedpromotional ladder was quite happy with his life. In interaction with the clerk, Dinesh found out thatclerk taught yoga and physical fitness exercises to a group of senior citizens. Sensing the interestgiven by Dinesh the clerk invited him to attend the evening session that day being the Annual Day ofthe class. That day the gathering would be large. The citizens around sixty years of age were veryhappy at Dinesh's visit. They lavishly praised the clerk; his knowledge of yoga and physical fitness. They gave full credit to the clerk about the positive outlook on life imbibed through him. Dinesh not onlyfelt happy with the senior citizens' interest in life. Moreover he felt proud about the contributions theclerk and his colleagues made to the society. During an hour and a half the clerk spent with Dinesh henever said anything about missing promotion or any further chances of promotion.

Another pleasant experience for Dinesh. The branch had closed earlier and Dinesh had somemore time to spend before he could leave for the Customer's Meet at the centre. The branch tookDinesh for tea at his place not far off from the branch. When they reached the residence (of the BranchManager), Dinesh saw a middle aged woman, (perhaps wife of the Branch Manager) narrating some

story to children, twelve or fifteen in number, of the age group of ten. The children looked from verypoor background and were sitting on the floor of the verandah of the residence. On seeing Dinesh andthe Branch Manager, the lady went inside asking one of her friends, maybe her regular colleague atthe assembly, to continue the story narration. As Dinesh and the Branch Manager took seats in themodest but well kept sitting room, the Manager told Dinesh that they had no issue. His wife spent theafternoon after the school hours narrating the children from the nearby poor families stories from goodepics and fairy tales. Two elder girls also from the poor families began the assembly with prayers. Thesession ended with a light devotional song. The Brach Manager was initially skeptic about the wife'sactivity. After sensing the response of the children in the activity of his wife, he too started takinginterest in her work. He presented the children with cricket kit and some story books.

Way back Dinesh was thinking over again and again. The Branch Manager was quite handsomeand his wife was also good looking. They seemed to be very happy with the life they were leading.Being issueless did not seem to make their life dull or sad.

Somewhat similar experiences and feedback Dinesh was receiving at almost every branch visitthrough Customer Visit and general talk with staff members, always about their outside the branch lifeand activities.

It was mid-day of the week and not much business activity. During the general conversation withthe staff members, it transpired to the staff that Dinesh was interested in music and that his son wastaking regular music lessons. The staff immediately requested Dinesh to spend a few more hours atthe branch during which they would arrange a small music programme at which five or six of the staffmembers would render musical compositions and also play guitar. When Dinesh agreed to theirrequest, in fifteen minutes the staff members arranged the necessary musical instruments likeharmonium, tabla, sitar, etc. and phoned their wives to join them. Dinesh was almost surprised to findthe musical talent of the staff members and the interest taken by them. It was a really a lively eveningfollowed by sumptuous eats. There was no doubt delay in Dinesh's leaving for the headquarters butDinesh had no regrets about that. The evening was really rewarding for him. He felt rather shamefulabout his limited knowledge about his own staff.

Visit to customer's industry or visit to farmer's field was a different experience. Although Dinesh'svisit provided opportunity to customers to convey their problems and difficulties and the assistancethey expected from the bank. They at times told him about the contribution the group of industriesmade to the society.

At few places it was a different experience altogether. It was a medium sized branch in theagricultural sector. The Branch Manager arranged visit to the farm partly because the farmer concernedwas a progressive one and placed good deposit with the bank. A unique feature of his farm holdingwas a five acre well irrigated piece and a little distance away a two acre and a half totally arid andunproductive land. It was mid winter the five acre piece was lush green with winter crops and wintervegetables. The farmer was all proud to present Dinesh with a basket of freshly cut vegetables. WhileDinesh was not exactly keen, the farmer persuaded him to visit the totally fallow and unproductivepiece. On the way he told Dinesh that he had made every effort to find out what cereals or fruit trees orany commercially useful tree could grow at that land. He regularly listened to the TV program addressedto farmers. He met several authorities at Tahsil and district place who could possibly advice him howhe best he could commercially deploy the fallow land. Seeing TV programs, he had thought ofsandalwood cultivation and bee keeping. Unfortunately other that wild flowers there were no honeyholding flowers which could attract the bees. He told Dinesh that his idea was not to narrate his problemsbut to see whether with the bank's help he could arrange for expert technical knowledge in the matterof productive use of the land. Dinesh did feel tired or bored after listening to the plight of the farmer. Herealized that he was a progressive farmer who made every effort in a positive to make the barrenpiece of land a productive one. Dinesh had so far not much experience about agriculture other than

timely supply of fertilizers and bank credit. He was very much moved by the farmer's story. Somethingneed to be done must do in the matter. He assured the farmer that at the earliest and in consultationwith his higher authorities he would find a way out. If necessary the bank could get technical expertsfrom countries like Israel to guide the farmer, all at bank's cost. The farmer and the Branch Managerfelt really very happy at Dinesh's response. Dinesh indeed realized that what he was talking from wellwithin his heart and that had the necessary impact.

Most of these visits to branches proved very rewarding to Dinesh. It was a stark revelation to himnow that career progression, good school or college for children or vacation once in two years at a hillstation or a sea resort did matter but not having them need not affect fulfillment and joy of life. It wasnow revelation to him that life is very rich and multicolored one with varied colors and shades. Oneshould discover for oneself the proper colour and shade that would take them to fulfillment of life. Nonpromotion of the clerk or the issueless life of the Branch Manager and his wife or the unique problemfaced by the small sized farmer did not make their life negative and morose. Dinesh looked inward atthe life he had lead so far. Career progression, good posting and good education for his childrenmattered to him all along. Anything that affected these would bring moment of unhappiness to him. Nomore was this to be the case. The enlightened perspective now part of his made Dinesh see howbeautiful and rich life was and how a closer look at the people around you can tell you what you coulddo for them. Dinesh now blessed all the authorities at the Head Office for providing him with anopportunity to work at the Regional Office and understand the beautiful world around him.
