strong start for the 1st qatar optimist cup in dohaThe Inaugural Qatar Optimist Cup started today, in warm and hospitable Doha on the north eastern Arabian peninsular. Qatar hit the headlines when it won the bid to host the football world cup in 2022. Hosting top level sporting events, including the Asian Games in 2006, are all helping to put this Gulf state on the map.

At this time of year, sunshine, temperatures in the 20s, and good wind fore-casts attracted some of the top optimist sailors from three continents, to make use of the blue waters of the Gulf and to challenge for the Qatar Optimist Cup.Three races were scheduled for the first day, so the 50 sailors from 15 countries set out early for the course area, a colourful spectacle of keen young sailors. After waiting for the sea breeze to kick in, racing finally got underway.

The wide mix of abilities makes this event perfect for the local Qatari Opti-mist sailors. They’re a new team and part of a growing awareness in the Gulf that water and sailing are natural assets on their doorstep for youngsters to take up.The light conditions called for more tactical racing since the pace of the race was slow, allowing the young sailors time to think about their choices. But the thermal breeze was stable enough to make boat speed a key factor.

In the first of the two races of the day Rasim Yasar, TUR 1281, had a great upwind leg to then overtake Fares Abdelfettah, ALG 2015, on the first reach and to then keep his lead.Singaporean Marsha Shahrin, SIN 4475, made great efforts gaining ground on Yasar but the young Turk had a safe enough lead to give him the bullet in the first race of the event.14 Qatari sailors are taking part in the championship and the Qataris aim to develop a strong and competitive squad towards Optimist worlds levels. This mixed fleet – with sailors from Algeria, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, Spain, Finland, Britain, Germany, India, Singapore, Switzerland, Turkey and the UAE – will help the local youngsters up their game.

RACES DAY 1Turkey is leading on the second day of the Qatar Optimist CupThe 2nd day of Qatar Optimist Cup 2013 again witnessed the light winds. However 2 races were completed. The leaders of first day main-tained their positions. Master Rasim Yasar from Turkey is leading fol-lowed by Marsha Shahrin of Singapore & Nicolas Rolaz of Switzerland.

With 4 races scheduled, the race committee kicked off race 1 as early as they could today, and set a more even start line.The fleet crossed the line in around 8 knots of breeze and the majority headed to the more favoured right hand side of the course.After rounding the top mark first, Algerian sailor ZAKARI MOKHATARI led the fleet on the reach, and then a group of four spit away at the front on the downwind leg battling for top spot.

ZAKARI MOKHATARI, Marsha Shahrin from Singapore, RASIM YAS-AR from Turkey and Nicolas Rolaz from Switerland fought down the run, but it was Rolaz who managed to round the leeward mark first.

On the upwind leg RASIM YASAR from Turkey managed to break free from the rest to finish in first place with Nicolas Rolaz not far behind.Unfortunately the wind did not last long, and after all the boats crossed the finish line it died completely. That was the bad news. The good news was that it made some time for swimming and enjoying the warm weather.

After long postponement the breeze finally filled in and race 3 was com-pleted.

THE MUSEUM OF ISLAMIC ART

The museum building has rapidly become an iconic feature of the Doha landscape. Standing alone on reclaimed land, the building draws much in-fluence from ancient Islamic architecture, notably the Ibn Tulun Mosque of Cairo.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M. Pei, the Museum is com-prises of a main building with an adjacent education wing connected by a large central courtyard. The main building rises five-storeys, topped by a high domed atrium within a central tower.

The cream-coloured limestone captures the changes in light and shade during the day.

The interior is no less spectacular. The centerpiece of the Atrium is a curved double staircase leading up to the first floor. Above it floats an ornate circu-lar metal chandelier echoing the curve of the staircase.

An oculus, at the top of the atrium, captures and reflects patterned light within the faceted dome. The five-story 45-metre tall window on the north side gives spectacular panoramic views across the bay.

The geometric patterns of the Islamic world adorn the spaces, and including the ceilings of the elevators. A variety of textures and materials from wood and stone have created a unique environment for the museum’s stunning collections.

team racing timeTurkish Team dominates in Team Racing DayTeam racing was scheduled for day 3 of the inaugural Qatar Opti-mist Cup in Doha. After tuning and preparing their boats, the sailors went to the skippers briefing to establish that 6 teams would be rac-ing for podium glory. Since not every country had the required number of athletes to form a national team, the organisers created some mixed teams to be able to compete – a real test for their communication skills.

For team 5 and team 6, made up of sailors from Qatar, the UAE and Algeria, this kind of racing was new and challenging. Abdullah Al Raeesi from the UAE and Ganim Al Sewaidi from Qatar fought hard with their team mates, but they went home early, having gained valuable experience.4 strong teams qualified for the semi-finals and the battle to reach the final was intense.

Rasim Yasar from Turkey led from the front to try to get his team through. Algerian Zakari Mokhtari from Team 3 did everything he could to stop Yasar right up to the finish line, but Team 4 from Turkey went through.The team from Algeria had to face Team 2 in the petite final to decide 3rd place over-all. The two stand out athletes were Marsha Shahrin from Singapore for team 2 and Mohammed Kebaili from Algeria for team 3. Right from the start line they clashed around the course, but the Algerians showed better unity and performance to snatch the bronze medal at the very end.The grand Final was between Teams 1 & 4. The strong Turks against a Euro-pean mixed team from Switzerland, Britain and Germany. The Turks led from early on and showed their intentions to take the title. Team 1 was trying to fight back and was hoping for some mistakes from the Turks. But team 4 were unstoppable and very well prepared for this race. They followed the in-structions from their coach with Rasim Yasar protecting the two young girls on his squad from attack. The 6 knots of wind helped the girls to break free due to their light weight and they managed to finish first and second which gave them a strong advantage as the rest of the sailors battled for the line… And it was enough. Victory to the sailors from Turkey and smiles all round.

The race officers will use tomorrow’s lay day to catch up on lost races, so we’ll have more action coming soon.

RACES DAY 3New Year’s Eve brings the best conditions so far at the Qatar Optimist CupSailors enjoyed the good winds and Race Officers managed to complete 4 more races today. According to schedule 4th day was a spare day; however Race Officers made it racing day to complete the pending races because of low wind on day 1 & 2 looking at the prevailing condition.Excellent sailing conditions made competition very interesting. Good starts & upward speed made some of the leading sailors of previous days more comfortable in their lead position. Over all a very satisfactory schedule of racing.The local sailors from Qatar, after the experience of close battling during yesterday’s team racing, tuned their boats while waiting for the launch flag. This team is looking forward to the upcoming 2014 events in Qatar.Sail the Gulf, which takes place in February, is the biggest international sailing event in Qatar. Also the first Continental Kite surfing competition will take place in November, which should attract some of the world’s top kiters.Meanwhile, the weather was more promising today with four races scheduled and the athletes set off right after the launch signal to test their speeds against rivals.The first signal was at 10.20 with the majority of the fleet heading to the port side of the course. Okyanus Arikan from Turkey had a great start and headed to the right hand side. At the first mark she managed to lead over second placed Walter Wahlroos from Finland a few meters behind. On the reach Arikan kept her lead but the Finn made up distance looking for any mistake from her to attack.The boat to boat battle continued on the downwind leg with Wahlroos taking the advantage half-way down and then leading around the downwind mark.Meanwhile Rasim Yasar from Turkey and Marsha Shahrin from Singapore had their own private battle. After a slow start, they hauled in several boats on the reach and the downwind leg.But Okyanus Arikan did her best and covered the lost meters from Walter Wahlroos with good tactics and great speed on the final upwind. Finally she won the race…Yasar and Shahrin fought their way around the course and finally dissev-ered their place in the top ten.3-4 races are scheduled for the first day of 2014 depending on the weath-er, at the penultimate day of racing of the Qatar Optimist Cup. Souq Waqif

Souq Waqif is an important souq in Doha. Literally translated to “the stand-ing market,” this shopping destination is renowned for selling tradition-al garments, spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs. It is also home to dozens of restaurants serving cuisines from all over the world, as well as Shisha lounges. Although this market dates back at least a hundred years, it has been recently restored back to its original glory. It is now considered one of the top tourist destinations within Doha.

Thousands of people from across the region frequent this market to pur-chase traditional goods.

Lately Souq Wakif became a hotspot for art galleries and workshops, host-ing several art galleries and events. It also hosts local concerts during the holiday seasons.

At any time of day, Souq Waqif is always bustling with people walking around the alleys window-shopping or enjoying their shisha with friends and family at restaurants.
