Food“We’re increasingly relying on Waters’ SFE instruments to extract food oils from solid matrices such as olives and sunflower seeds. Using CO2 means our compounds emerge cleaner with no residual toxic solvents – resulting in higher purity and yield with lower overall operating costs. Plus, the remaining product is physiologically safe, which allows us to re-sell the solid waste to local farms for cattle feed. So we save time, get a higher quality extracted sample, and have a strong secondary market. Total resource utilization is certainly better for the environment as well.”

Waters is demonstrating that SFE is not only “more green,”

but that it’s nearly as easy to use as basic LC.

Environmental“We need to seek out the most effective methods in detection, identification, and characterization of chemical contaminants in our environment. Our biggest reason for choosing Waters is their full suite of purification technology. The complementary nature of LC, SFC, and SFE means that I have the selectivity and sensitivity required, no matter the challenge. And these methodologies can easily scale to meet EPA and other environmental standards worldwide.”

Waters understands the workflow demands of environmental

analysts. Our easy-to-use instruments can readily translate their

methodology to EPA or other strict governmental requirements.

Chemical“Because impurity identification is an essential part of the manufacture of fine chemicals, I have to rely on instruments that can process samples with the highest purity and highest yield. An uncharacterized impurity can affect the properties of my final product, so I need solutions that can be counted on throughout my process.”

Waters provides the chemical industry with the full spectrum of solutions:

This creates exceptional analytical capabilities

within your lab with the added operational

advantage of Waters support throughout

your workflow.

The heart of the matterWaters’ robust purification solutions are flexible, scalable, and easily integrated. From high-throughput fraction collection of hundreds of samples, to purifying just a handful of samples a day, Waters enhances the speed and reliability of your lab’s workflow.

There are significant benefits of having multiple Waters instruments in your lab. Each of the three techniques for purifying samples can complement the others, and this orthogonal perspective gained by purifying with more than one technique allows for greater ability to discover and identify compounds in a sample.

LCAnalytical to Semi-Preparative to Preparative-Scale Purification

Proven PerformanceWaters’ market-leading LC technologies make purification more accessible.

Analytical to Semi-Preparative solutions enable quick response to occasional or on-demand purification requirements and are well-suited for situations where you only have a limited number of samples to purify.

Semi-preparative to preparative-scale solutions offer more advanced features and are designed for labs where purification is a dedicated function. They offer fully automated UV- or mass-directed purification with an operating ease of use that satisfies situations with diverse staffing needs.

SFEEnvironmentally Friendly Sample Extraction

The cleanest step in your workflowSupercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is a highly selective extraction technique, often used as a pre-purification sample preparation method, capable of extracting compounds from solid matrices to isolate compounds of interest.

Waters’ supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) systems use supercritical C02 in place of toxic organic solvents. It has become the technique of choice for decaffeinating coffee, extracting natural oils, extraction of fat from food products, fractionating polymeric materials, and photo-resist and precision part cleaning. Waters’ SFE offers better selectivity, increased speed, and lower operating costs compared to traditional extraction systems.

SFCSemi-Preparative to Preparative-Scale Purification

The green alternativeQuality purification meets quality of life. Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) is a beneficial alternative that replaces toxic solvents – expensive to purchase and dispose of – with naturally occurring CO2.

The principles of SFC are similar to those of liquid chromatography. SFC is essentially a normal phase chromatographic technique with inherent high speed and efficiency that uses environmentally friendly liquid CO2 as the main mobile phase component.

Considered a leading “green” purification technology, SFC is a beneficial alternative that also delivers faster and more cost-efficient lab operations.
