PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

This is my last President's Message and it comes at a bittersweet time. We have just witnessed two enormous tragedies in Texas, Florida, Georgia and South Caroli-na. So many puli people were affected and our hearts go out to them and hope they are safe. In light of this, as you will see reported in more detail elsewhere in this issue*, your board has made a donation to the AKC Reunite Fund. I hope each of you know that you were a part of this donation through your dues and your dona-tions to the club. So many lives have been changed by these disasters and it will be years before many are made whole again.

I have been honored to be your representative for these last two years and I have been blessed to have the support of many of you. To all of you who answered my calls, to all of you who worked for the club, to all of you who volunteered, I give you my sincerest thanks. Your new President, Jim Moen will be a wonderful advo-cate for our breed. I hope to see you all at the Specialty in October in Tennessee.

Jane Exum, President

Meet the Breeds at Orlando National Championship

Julie Schuh has the form from AKC for Meet the Breeds at the National Champion-ship. Janice Mitchell has agreed to handle this again this year. There is a $110 fee for electric service for the booth.

MOTION: I, Julie Schuh, move that $110 be approved for Meet the Breeds at the National Championship in December. The cost is to cover electrical service to the booth.

National Specialty Update

Julie Schuh informed the Board that every event for the 2017 National Specialty has been approved. More information needs to be placed on the PCA website about this year’s national specialty so that people who are interested in attending will know what kind of events are planned. People have been asking Julie for more details about what is occurring.

2017 Awards Booklet

Jane Exum told the Board that Cathy Pronzini has written to her about the awards booklet. Cathy is getting ready to start putting this year’s booklet together. She wants to confirm that the Board still wants placques for Best in Show winners and High in Trial Winners with dangles for additional awards to the same dog. PCA has never recognized a Rally Top 10 and Cathy inquired about that as well.

MOTION: I, Julie Schuh move that the Top 10 Rally winners be added for recogni-tion in the annual awards booklet starting in 2017 and authorizing club funds for pur-chase the report to keep track of rally awards.

Second: Linore Cleveland

Request From AKC

Jane Exum received a letter from AKC requesting the names of two club members in case a news agency has an inquiry regard-ing pulis. This could either be for breed information or health information. The Board discussed this issue and decided to ask Susi Szeremy and Linda Meakin if they would be willing to take on this responsi-bility. Jane will contact both of them re-garding this task.

Specialty Advisor Position

Jim Moen has written up a definition for the Specialty Advisory Committee. Patty Anspach read about the Committee in Puli News and called Jim about this concept. Patty is okay with the concept but thinks the current show chair should not be on the committee as they are working on the spe-cialty already. She feels it would be more appropriate to have the committee com-

Board Members Present: Jackie Beaudoin, Brian Brubaker, Stacy Czekaj, Jane Exum, Jim Moen, Nancy Kelly, Julie Schuh, Glen VanderHart, Maggie Witwer.

Board Members Absent: Kathy Allen, Ann Bowley, Linore Cleveland

Meeting called to order at 6:10 pm.

2017 Specialty:

• Glenn reported all was on track,

there are no issues. The specialty

is Friday, October 13th. The ban-

quet will be Friday night.

• 30 rooms are blocked for

Wednesday and Sunday, 60 for

other days.

• Sherry Gibson, judge – Do we

need a room for her or will she

have an RV? We will book what

she wants.

• Gifts for judges: Julie wants to

know how many. She is going to

get a cheese box including choco-

late cheese from Wisconsin.

Yum! This will include the agility

judge.

• The first draft of the premium has

been sent to Onofrio. More may

be added after the first draft is

returned.

• Valerie is getting rosettes from

Hungary.

• Videographer: Stacy asked about

price. With a higher price, fewer

are sold and a lower price may

bring more sales. Everyone

agreed a video record of our spe-

cialties is very important for our

club. Glenn suggested putting a

blurb in the Premium and/or cat-

alog with the price and where to

order it. We could give copies to

our judges as a thank you. Jim

said we should have a statement

in the catalog saying the show

will be recorded on video. Brian

said that the premium should

state that the show will be vide-

otaped and by entering, you will

be in the video. Brian said the

statement about price and buying

should not go in premium but on

the website and FaceBook.

• Obedience and Rally will start at

8 am but will not be done by 10

am. Julie asked Glenn to call

Mary Beth (Onofrio) and tell

them we cannot overlap with

conformation.

Website: Valerie is helping with design. The intro verbiage was discussed. Maggie will provide a suggested edit.

Volunteer recognition at banquet: All agreed Dagmar Fertl has done a great deal for the club as AKC columnist and scan-ning old PN’s for the website archive. Julie will get her a gift – cheese?

Jeff (help me with last name Julie) passed away and left a treasure trove of Puli stuff that is being offered to PCA for raffle or auction. Funds will go to rescue.

Rally as part of Versatile Puli: Nancy will walk Julie through how to get the stats from AKC and work out how to assign rally points to Versatility.

Health: Dr Linda Meakin would be a great candidate as a health expert referral per-son.

Media: Susi Szeremy would be a great media contact.

The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.

Minutes by Maggie Witwer in Kathy Al-len's absence.

“JAKE”

2000-June 11 2017

Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over…

It became a butterfly.

English Proverb

My “caterpillar” was my little Jake, so sweet, so gentle, so handsome! Wrapped in a world of darkness, my Jake, a rescue, instead of remaining in a dark place, the “cocoon” burst and the caterpillar turned into a butterfly, free to escape the dark-ness and fly into the light… just like humans we are to remember that often in our darkest hours thing happen we don’t

understand, but with faith and hope we can burst through like the butterfly into the light

Earth has one gentle soul less,

Heaven has one special angel more.

Reunited with his beloved “BIG BROTHER” Sammy.

Puli News— September 2017, Page 10

President: JIM MOEN

We first brought (rescued) Pulik into our home in 1974, and Pulik have run the place ever since. We subscribed to Puli News for years, but in 1993 we got Pulik from PCA breeders, joined the club and got completely hooked on Conformation, Agility, Obedience and Herd-ing. I enjoy the training sessions, and I still love that feeling of moving around the ring with my Puli. I previously served in various positions on the PCA Board for eight years. Professionally, I worked over 31 years in Infor-mation Technology, initially as a developer and later as Software Engineering Manager in the IT department of a major corporation. My career helped me to work with others, often with divergent opinions, to get complicated things done. Since retirement in 1999, I did IT Con-sulting for another 10 years. I've managed the PCA website, that of my son's Language School business in Germany, and several websites of my own. As successful as PCA has been, I think we need to improve our efforts to bring in and mentor new Puli owners, with hopes some will want to learn to become serious breeders. We are a small breed, and it's important that we contin-

ue and improve the best qualities in our lines. Vice Pressident: BRIAN BRUBAKER

Brian Brubaker has had a lifelong obsession with dogs for as long as he can remem-ber. (The library books on dogs at the Rouses Point elementary school with his name written

all over the check out cards can attest to this.). He first became involved with dog training and showing through his local 4-H club and its lead-ers who breed and show Alaskan Mala-mutes. Through 4-H Brian did extensive work training his family dog through a CDX equiva-lent and in junior showmanship. Brian's relent-less pursuit of pulik began by stalking Ann Bowley and Kermit at dog shows around the northeast circa 1989. He finally acquired his first puli, Mac, along with his wife, Alece, in 1997 from Dr. Mary Wakeman. Since that time Brian has owned/co-owned 5 pulik finish-ing their American and Canadian championships and participating in herding testing and agility training. In his professional life Brian works in interna-tional education managing customized interna-tional education projects as an Asst Vice Presi-dent for IES Abroad in Chicago. In this role he manages a national sales team and client rela-tions for his division yielding about $6.5M in annual revenue. Brian is continuing as Vice President. He is also a member of the Elgin Kennel Club (IL), Har-risburg Kennel Club (PA), and Morris and Es-sex Kennel Club (NJ). When he's not working, doing puli stuff, or serving as a practice goalie for his hockey-fanatic nephew, Brian loves traveling, garden-ing with Alece, riding his bike, and enjoying good food with friends and family. Recording Secretary: ANN BOWLEY

I have been a member of PCA for over 40 years. I have been involved with Pulik, show-ing in conformation, obedience, herding, and breeding with our fantastic breed. I have been involved with health issues having had my Pulik used for the pioneering of the Penn Hip program, I started doing eye exams on my Pulik since the 1970's back when I was in-volved with my collies and eye testing.

I have bred over 75 champions, had top 10 and #1 Pulik on several levels. Wallbang-

er Pulik have won several BB at nationals as well as WD-WB wins. and as producers have been influential to the breed. Wallbanger Pulik have won numerous BIS for me as well as their owner/handlers . Ch.Wallbanger Kermit J.Bounce,H.T. was the first GROUP 1st Puli at Westmin-ster and also was SHOW DOG OF THE YEAR Kennel Review Tournament of Chs. As a Recording Secretary I hope to continue to listen and act upon what is im-portant to our membership and to our fantas-tic breed!

Corresponding Secretary: PAULA VAN LAANEN

I look forward to serving in the role of Corre-sponding Secretary for our club. I became interested in pulik back in the 1970's when I was starting out in junior showmanship and met Dee Rummel with Fifi. I always knew I would have a puli when the right time came. Nearly 15 years later, and after completing nursing school, I acquired my first puli - Josha from Dee. Since then, my husband Peter and I have enjoyed many delightful pulis in our household. Two of the most endearing pulis that we have been honored to have in our lives were Ch. Moonshadow's Busy Body (Ninabean) and Lulu. Ninabean and Lulu lived nearly 18 years. Boomer and his cardigan sidekick "Bonnie" have added youth and great fun to our house-hold again. I recently retired from my role as an RN Quality Analyst in Cardiovascular Medi-cine. I am looking forward to my time off and hopefully enjoying more time doing perfor-mance events (agility, obedience, rally) with our dogs.

Treasurer: LINORE CLEVELAND

I am looking forward to continuing as PCA Treasurer for another term. I hope to keep all our members in the loop in terms of how PCA is handling its funds. I am also excited to serve with the fabulous board that your nominating committee has put together. I have been (and continue to be) Puli News Editor. I also have my own dog training busi-ness — exclusively doing “Clicker Training”. I lost my beloved training companion, Kerge, in 2016. He provided me with opportunities to participate in Obedience, Rally, Agility, Dance, and Herding plus dabbling in scent work and treiball. I now have a new Puli, Tess, and we are working hard to be able to partici-pate in many venues. I also serve as Trial Secre-tary for my local obedience/rally club (and have done so for many years. I have a wonder-ful husband (of 50+ years) who supports me in all that I do. Board Member: KATHY ALLEN It's gratifying to have been selected by the Nominating Committee to serve as a Board Member after having served as Recording Sec-retary. I acquired my first puli in 1988 and have had at least one in our home ever since. We currently have a household of 8 pulis ranging in age from a little over 1 year to a nearly 13 year old. I have been a member of PCA since 1989. In my professional career I work as a land use planner for a local city. I have been involved in showing in confor-mation since we acquired our very first pu-li. For about the past 10 years we have dabbled in also competing in both obedience and ral-ly. Our pulis have earned various titles over the years but I am most proud of our two pulis who have earned PCA's Versatile Puli award.

These are hard times for breeders and owners of purebred dogs. The "Adopt Don't Shop" movement has gained momentum and for many in the general public owning a non-rescue or purebred dog is no longer considered political-ly correct. I wholeheartedly support breed rescue and especially the efforts of our own rescue group but think it is critical in these times to try to get out a positive message about the importance of preserving our purebred dogs for future generations to enjoy! Board Member: STACY GAIL CZEKAJ Stacy Gail Czekaj loves animals. Born and raised on a farm in Tawas City, Michigan, much of Stacy’s early life was spent raising and caring for llamas, sheep, livestock, dogs, horses and more. Her passion for horses led her to compete successfully in major Midwest eques-trian and rodeo events and exhibitions over the years, including dressage and barrel riding. Today however, Stacy is most passionate about dogs, particularly the Puli. Stacy has been a member of the American and Canadian National Puli Clubs for over 10 years. However, her fondness for the breed began years earlier as she would drive 200 miles each way to see and talk to Puli owners at the De-troit Kennel Club show in downtown Detroit each year. As an AKC owner/handler, she has successfully competed and earned awards at every level with her dogs, Marley and now Gyula. Stacy represented the American Puli Club at the National Canine Health Convention in St. Louis a short time back. Her report on health related issues, breakthroughs and future concerns was reported in the Puli News. Since becoming a member, Stacy has learned a great deal and has developed many new friendships with Puli owners across North America and the world. She is very proud of her appointment to the group’s board of directors. Outside the ring, Stacy currently works in the “people” healthcare industry, Beaumont Hospi-tal in Royal Oak, Michigan. She is a surgical technician and has successfully served in many professional capacities at major hospitals over the past 25 years. Board Member: NANCY GUAGENTI I began as a member of PCA in the early 70's when we acquired our first Puli. I began show-ing then in both conformation and obedience. My first litter was bred in the early 1970's as well. We took a break from showing and breeding while our children were young and then began again in the 1980's. I have been active since that time. For PCA I have served on multiple commit-tees, including the health committee, herding description, Show Chair for multiple special-ties, member's education, and nominating committee. I particularly enjoy being a mentor for those who want to know more about the puli. I have a strong desire to protect this breed that has given me such joy. I live with 2 Pulik, Ivy and Bryzzo, and my husband Andy.

Board Member: NANCY KELLY

I have had Pulik since the early 1980s. It was-n’t until the mid- 1990s that they became more than just pets and companions. I have been active in Obedience with my Puli since that time. As time has gone on, I have also involved them in Conformation, Herding and Agility. I find the breed to be extremely smart and versa-tile. I have also done limited breeding. That is probably the most challenging thing I have done with the breed. It is not an easy task to find the right mates and beyond the basics of

health concerns, whelping a litter, raising them with appropriate stimulation and then finding the right homes for each one has been scary and rewarding. I am now retired and have enjoyed being able to spend more time with Pulik and getting involved in even more with them. They have thrived on activity and challenges and I can imagine my life without a Puli. As a Board Member, I hope to see the club be involved in all aspects of our breed and continue to have a breed that is “one of a kind” as the Dr. Pepper ad said. It is important to educate members and the public about not only dog ownership but also Puli ownership.

Board Member: HELEN LAWSON

Our family has been blessed with a Puli since 1978. I must say, during many years of mar-riage, Ted and I discussed many things, but adding this four legged friend never surfaced. However, things changed after meeting Dr. Mary Wakeman at our first dog show in New England. Not being savvy about different Breeds, for some reason, this particular Breed demanded that we take notice at first glance. Dr. Wake-man gave us a brief overview, then the research began. Wow! Pat Coleman, one who I consider to be 'the gospel on this Breed' got us started in 1978, and I could write a book about trying to acquire our first. Years later, Joe Merchant, gave us a real boost by selling us two litter ma-tes. Joe and Jackie Beaudoin, cheered us on through the years, and many of you have been in our corner as well, thank you. I have learned so much about the Breed over the years with your helping hands along the way. Therefore, it was an honor to have been asked to join the Board. An open mind and genuine interest in being an advocate for the Breed will be my goals. Thank you for your vote of confidence. Board Member: GLEN VAN DER HART

(picture at end of writeup) It is an honor to have been asked to continue as a nominee for a Board position. Over the years past, I have been on many Boards, holding a

range of positions. It is my endeavor to hold this position with continued grace and dignity. Both Les and I have been the daddies of Pulik for the past 9 years. Simply put, we have had an absolute blast of a time, with my only regret of not having a Puli sooner. Like the unique and rareness of our dogs, so are the lifetime friends we have made through our Pulik. AKC Delegate: MAGGIE WITWER

I have been owned by Pulik since 1969 and started showing them in the mid-1970’s, about the same time I became a member of PCA. I am a retired librarian and live on a working Hereford ranch east of Greeley, Colorado. My Pulis enjoy the wide-open spaces and I spend a fair amount of time picking large and small bits of tumbleweed out of their cords. I have served 3 terms as AKC Delegate for PCA. Additionally, I have served on the board and as recording secretary in the last 25 years as well as chairing the ethics committee that wrote the current Guidelines that appear in the back of Puli News and brought to completion with Linda Hall the official AKC Puli Breed Club Flier. I have served in every capacity on the board and show committee for the Greeley Kennel Club and am currently secretary and liaison to specialty clubs. The American Kennel Club faces many chal-lenges today including declining registrations, anti-dog and anti-breeding legislation as well as the aging of dog fanciers and drawing younger people into the sport. To support the dog fancy and purebred dogs, AKC must:

· Improve its image and public visibility

and become a more inclusive organi-zation.

· Create a pro-active strategy and be a leader in combating anti-dog and anti-breeding legislation currently being introduced across the nation by ani-mal rights groups.

· Be the champion of purebred dogs and present the cause of purebred dogs and purebred breeders to the public.

· Provide incentives to encourage the registration of all eligible AKC dogs.

· Help and support the welfare of its clubs.

· Support youth participation and Jun-ior Showmanship.

· Eliminate bureaucracy and use cur-rent technology to speed up Events operations.

· Do not cut positions that provide direct communication with clubs such as Field Representatives at events and staff at Delegate committee meetings.

AKC is the key organization in defending the sport of dogs and the cause of purebred dogs. As AKC delegate, I communicate to the PCA board and club members AKC’s plans and pro-posals and present PCA’s responses to AKC on these matters. I would be honored to continue to support and represent PCA and our unique and beloved breed in this capacity.

◊ HERDING TESTS—Monday October 16

PCA is offering two different Herding Tests this year — a Herding Instinct Test and a new AKC test called Farm Dog Certified (FDC). If you pass (and both tests are pass/fail) two tests for each discipline you will earn an AKC Herding Instinct Test Cetificate or a FDC Title. You do not need any specialized training or exposure to sheep for the Herding Instinct Test. The Instinct Test and FDC will be run simultaneously so you will be able to earn the needed Q’s in one day. Entry fee is $40 per Test. Each Instinct Test is only offered to Pulik, with 25 Pulis maximum for each test. The FDC is open to all breeds, with Pulik given preference. Each test will be limited to 25 dogs. There will be “day of entry” entries. However, it would be advantageous to pre-enter due to the limits on participants. The premium list is available on the Pu-liclub website in the section on the National Specialty. Entries close on September 29 at 5 pm. If you do not have access to the inter-net, you can contact Patty Anspach for a hard copy of the premium list — Patty Anspach 2367 E 100 N, Winamac, IN.

Judges will be Doyle Ivie and Claire A Hamilton; our judges are familiar with the Puli as at least one of our members trains with them.

For those of you who plan to be at the herding venue there is a KOA Campground about 16 miles from the venue. The campground welcomes Pulik (and other dogs). They even have a fenced exercise yard for dogs. RVs may park at the herding venue the day of the event but not overnight. We suggest you might want to camp at the campground on Sunday evening so you can get to the herding venue early on the day of the tests.

◊ CONFORMATION PREMIUM LISTS

There is a separate premium list for Conformation at the National Specialty. It can be found on the Onofrio website (www.onofrio.com). Look at upcoming events—closing on September 27,2017. PCA HERDING IN 2016

Unfortunately, there were no Pulik who participated successfully in AKC Herding Trials in 2016 so there is no Herding Champion for 2016.

However, there were Pulis active in Herding Tests.

Earning the Herding Tested title (HT) was:

CH Mezok Ramanok CD BN RE NAJ NAP OJP NFP CGC, owned by Julie Schuh and Ian Schuh

Earning Herding Instinct Certification were:

CH Lambak Etched ‘N Wool NA NAJ, owned by Sandra Schickedanz CH Lambak Here Comes Trouble, owned by Sandra Schickedanz Vadrozsa Back to the Future, owned by Laurel & Marc & Christian Denk and Vera Cain CH Vadrozsa Gomboc, owned by Kathy & Ross Allen Country Walk Mister Parker, owned by Janice Mitchell

Earning their first leg towards a Herding Instinct Certification were:

Lambak I Spy d’Winner, owned by Sandra Shickedanz Lambak Woz Meant To Be, owned by Sandra Shickedanz Loncsosi-Bator Mecsek, owned by Ross & Kathy Allen Vadrozsa Hotter Than A Habanero, owned by Ross & Kathy Allen

Hopefully, some of these Pulis will go on to compete in AKC Herding Trials. Finding a trainer with sheep and/or ducks who is willing to work with a Puli can be a difficult task. Check with our Herding committee (Patty Anspach and Sabrina Prim). They might be able to give you a lead on how to find a trainer. Talk to your “doggie” friends, they may know someone who is taking lessons and can refer you. Check out Herding Clubs in your area.

HERDING PERPETUAL TROPHY

A new Perpetual Trophy has been added to the PCA Perpetual Trophies. It was displayed at the 2015 National Specialty. PCA developed a formula for selecting the Herding Top Puli (effective 1991). The trophy lists these Herding Top Pulik and also shows the years in which there was no Herding Top Puli. At the time the Trophy was displayed at the Specialty, research was still being done on these winners. The research has now been completed and the Trophy bears plates showing these dogs. ANOTHER “ROOSTER” TALE By Jacki Evans

Hello Puli friends, Rooster here. Such excitement at our place this week! One morning, a few days ago, Dad let us outside, first thing in the morning and we went charging out as usual, only to be pulled up short by the sight of a sheep, a BIG sheep, in 'our' field! Just the other side of the fence! Wilma and I raced up to him, barking loudly and bouncing up and down. None of the others seemed too bothered but we were amazed. We had never seen a sheep so close be-fore. Wilma made a spirited attempt to get over the fence but it was just a bit too high. Mum came out to see what all the noise was about and called to Dad that there was a Ram in the field. She then took us both back inside as Wilma was making so much noise you couldn't hear yourself think! Dad was on the phone telling someone about it and when he put the phone down he told Mum that the farmer knew who the Ram belonged to and someone would be down to fetch him soon. Well, Wilma and I positioned ourselves on the back of the sofa, so we could watch the sheep through the win-dow, boy he was big and he had huge horns on top of his head that curled right down the side of his face. An-yway, quite soon a man we didn't recognize appeared from over the hill with a sheepdog by his side. What a performance! That old sheepdog ran to one side, then the other, then he lay down, then crept forward a bit. Then he ran again, round and round and up and down. For goodness sake, if someone had just let Wilma and I into the field we would have had that old sheep up and over the hill, out of the field and back to his own farm in half the time it took that show-off sheepdog. Still, we cheered through the window until he was out of site. Anyway, we thought that was the end of it, but no! The very next day, I was just coming back up to the house after having a bit of a patrol around the garden, when, would you believe it? There he was again! This time he was laying down right up against the fence, happily chewing the grass. I ran to the fence, barking for all I was worth, “Go away, go away” I shouted “this is OUR field, you are not allowed here, go away” Well, he just turned his head and looked at me. I barked again, but I was beginning to feel a bit silly actually. I stopped barking and sat down; he went back to his chewing. “Um, hello” I said, after a while, he took no no-tice, just went on chewing. “My name is Rooster” I tried again, this time politely offering a paw. He stopped chewing for a moment but didn't look at me. “You are not a Rooster” he said “You are a wolf” I was aston-ished. “I am NOT a wolf” I spluttered “and I didn't say I WAS a Rooster, I said my name was Rooster” He turned his head and looked at me again “Well, if you are not a wolf or a Rooster, what are you?” I thought about it. “I am a Puli” he snorted “So what's a Puli when it's at home?” I thought some more “Well....it's a Pu-li” “Ha, intelligent too” he said, sarcastically. “I AM intelligent” I said crossly, “All Pulis are intelligent, we are highly prized all over the world. We were bred to take care of and protect sheep like you from danger and to show them the way to go when the farmer wants them moved from one place to another” He looked me up and down for a minute “Well, in the first place, I am not a sheep, I am a Ram, that is FAR more important and in the second place, young pip squeak Puli, if there were any danger around, I think I would be far more equipped to deal with it than you! You don't even have any horns!” I thought about that, “No, but I have teeth” “Ha, I knew it, you ARE a wolf, a wolf in Puli clothing, funny, funny” he chuckled to himself. Oh dear this was getting ridicules. “I am NOT a wolf, I promise you I am not. Wolves are big and fierce, I am just Rooster, the Puli” He chewed some more. “Okay, okay, keep your curls on, young Rooster the Puli, I be-lieve you” We sat in silence for a while, until “So what is it like then, being Rooster the Puli?” “Oh it’s wonderful” I said “I have such a fun life, I live here with my family and my Mum and Dad and we go on outings and stuff and I go and watch sport with my Dad and I am the mascot at the Bowls club and we went on holiday to the seaside and we went to Crufts and……….” “Okay, okay, I get the picture” he said “A wonderful life, I am happy for you” I thought for a minute “So what’s it like being a sheep, sorry a Ram?” I asked “It’s okay” he said “a bit boring at the moment, they have taken my ladies away again, so it’s a bit lone-ly. Generally, I like being on my own but I found a gap in the hedge and thought I might just take a wander

and see what the rest of the world is like” he chewed some more. “I like this field, it’s got good grass and I like being here where I can see your house and all you wolves, sorry Pulis, running in and out, it’s interesting” I was about to ask him some more about being a Ram, when we both saw the man with the sheepdog coming down the field “Oh well, time to go again” he said, standing up. The sheepdog came running down the hill “Okay Rambo” he called “Time to go home, I really have got better things to do than to keep fetching you, you know” Rambo sighed “Listen to that stupid wolf; he pretends he is in charge, when we both know I could tumble him over in the mud if I chose to do so. Oh well, I had better go, nice to meet you, young Rooster the Puli, now I know my way, I’ll be back again soon” and with that he turned and walked off up the hill, with that silly, show off sheep dog running this way and that, laying down, creeping forward, running round again. I watched them go and almost cheered to see Rambo stop just once, lower his head and stamp his foot. Ha! That sheepdog stopped and backed off a bit. Yes I could see who was really in charge there. I went happily back indoors, looking forward to his next visit. THE END. Many thanks to Jacki for sharing another of “Rooster’s” tales with us. Jacki now has two published books of Rooster Tales. Her first book is listed on Amazon, although out of stock at the moment. Jacki is a member of PCA—you might check with her to see where else you might be able to purchase the books.

AKC Gazette Column June 2017

Puli as Therapy Dogs

I asked Renee Beymer to join me in writing this column, since she has the first Pulik to title in the new AKC Thera-py Pet Program. Renee remains active in therapy pet work in her local community, and she is very proud of how her Pulik have provided an important service.

Scientific research shows that people benefit from positive interactions with dogs, with a decrease in ‘stress hormone’ (cortisol) levels along with an increase in the ‘cuddle hormone’ (oxytocin). Puli owners know that when we pet and/or hug our Pulik, we feel great. Some Puli people have chosen to share the love and compan-ionship of their Puli with others by becoming a therapy dog team.

Therapy dogs are dogs that go with their owners to volunteer in settings such as schools, hospitals, and nursing homes bringing hearty doses of joy. When a corded Puli enters a facility, heads turn. The flowing coat and hap-py face bring smiles to most faces followed by questions starting with “What kind of dog is that?” It is never hard to start a conversation when you have a Puli at your side (whether your Puli is corded or sports a more anonymous shaved-down appearance). From working with a child who is learning to read to visiting a senior in assisted living, therapy dogs and their owners work together as a team to improve the lives of other people. Therapy dogs also provide cheer and entertainment for the ill and injured in hospitals. Sometimes animals heal mental wounds more easily and faster than traditional medicine, by providing a non-judgmental presence for those in need. In addition, they might sit with patients during chemotherapy infusions and visit at airports.

The AKC Therapy Dog Program was initiated to recognize AKC dogs and their owners who have given their time and helped people by volunteering as a therapy dog and owner team. There are titles for as few as 10 and as many as 400 visits. AKC does not certify therapy dogs; the certification and training is done by qualified ther-apy dog organizations. Further information on the Therapy Dog Program can be found at http://www.akc.org/dog-owners/training/akc-therapy-dog-program/.

We are aware that many Pulik have provided therapy-related services to many adults and children over the years, oftentimes becoming local celebrities in their own right. One particularly heartwarming story is of “Pulioosha” who was rescued from the rubble at the World Trade Center after 9-11 and later became a therapy dog. Many Puli owners have not recorded all the details of their visits, and cannot be officially recognized with a title(s), but nonetheless have given selflessly of time and effort to share their compassion and love of the Puli to help others. In some cases, they are Puli Club of America members who have been able to use therapy dog visits to help meet some of the requirements needed to earn a Versatile Puli title from the Club.

Five Pulik (three female and two male) have applied for and received AKC therapy dog titles. And as noted ear-lier for other Pulik, these five have likely participated in many, many more visits than those recorded. Three of the titled Pulik have completed 100 visits and received the Therapy Advanced (THDA) title, while the other Puli logged 50 visits for the Therapy Dog (THD) title. The five therapy dog-titled Pulik are:

• Superfly Cascade of Black THDA CGC – “Anika” (F) owned by Renee Beymer. “Anika” was the very first

Puli to receive AKC recognition as a THD and THDA (December 2014).

• Sinergi Strawberry Beret ACT1 THDA CGC – “Sari” (F) owned by Renee Beymer

• Mezok Oltes-Rosea Emelt THDA CGC – “Noe Sophia” (F) owned by Judith K Roush

What makes a good therapy dog? In order to perform safely and comfortably in a variety of settings, a therapy dog should be friendly, patient, confident, gentle and at ease in all situations. Working as a therapy dog seems to come naturally to some Pulik. Put their therapy-dog-identifying-scarf or -vest on, and the most animated Pu-li settles down to spend time with their human spreading calmness and encouragement to those they visit. Each type of therapy dog visit has different requirements and expectations for the Puli team, and it is the job of the handler to determine which visits work best for the team. As a partner of a therapy dog team, the handler is the Puli’s advocate. It is the handler’s responsibility to make sure their Puli does not get stressed, while it is work-ing.

Obviously, every dog needs training, without which they cannot do therapy work. There are programs specifi-cally to certify pets and their handlers to qualify to perform pet-assisted therapy. Registering organizations for therapy dog teams differ, so it is important to do your research to determine the proper fit for you and your Pu-li. A list of therapy dog organizations is found at the AKC website at http://www.akc.org/events/title-recognition-program/therapy/organizations/.

While a registered therapy dog team can go into any number of facilities, the team must have prior approval from the specific facility they plan to visit and the team is covered with liability insurance by the therapy dog organization who certified their skills. A therapy dog is not to be confused with a service dog, which actually provides a “service” to a person with exceptionality (i.e., seeing eye dog for the blind, seizure alert dog, etc.). Service dogs stay with their person and have special access privileges in public places such as on planes, at restaurants, etc.

It is also important to note that not every dog is meant to be a therapy dog – it take a special dog and owner to become a therapy dog team. It’s up to us to help our dogs discover what they’re best at.

Hurricane Harvey

As I write this, Hurricane Harvey has just left in its wake, a path of destruction throughout south Texas and Louisiana, and in particular, extensive flooding of my hometown Houston. It is staggering how many people have lost their homes and their pets. Many pets were displaced and lost as a result of the storm and its after-math, the total number of affected pets likely will never be known.

Two AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailers were deployed in Dallas and Fort Worth, to help evacuees from the storm, and AKC Reunite is helping shelters caring for pets displaced by the storm. The deployment of these trailers allows people to safely evacuate with their pets instead of risking their lives because they do not have a safe, pet-friendly place to go. Quite recently, in addition to a monetary donation to the city of Houston, the AKC Hu-mane Fund donated an AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer to the city of Houston (can you believe that the fourth largest city in the nation didn’t have its own trailer prior to this event?). Efforts currently are underway by Texas dog clubs to pay for an additional trailer to service the Houston/Galveston area, as well as have other pet disas-ter relief trailers in Texas.

Many lessons were learned post- Hurricane Katrina (2005). The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS) was a bi-partisan initiative in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006 to require states seeking Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance to accommodate pets and service animals in their plans for evacuating residents facing disasters. Many shelters in the Houston area accepted pets when their evacuated owners had them in crates close by. Most hotels, I believe, also loosened or waived pet policies to ac-commodate evacuees.

Sadly, there is still at least one significant flaw relating to the lack of strategies and precise plans to find animals separated from their owners. Specifically, there is no unified tracking system. The lack of a centralized database for pets lost and found during Harvey and its aftermath makes it extremely challenging to reconnect animals to their rightful owners, most notably when they are not microchipped. At this writing, there are dozens of Face-book pages and websites attempting to do just this, but with no centralization. It cannot be emphasized enough to keep ID on your pets. Have your dog micro-chipped for more reliable identification should you become sepa-rated from each other (AKC Reunite is a great program).

This is a good time to consider the preparation of a disaster survival kit for all of your pets, especially if you live in an area affected by tropical storm activity. The kit for dogs should include: crate; collars (with ID and rabies tags) and leashes; medical records (e.g., vaccination history and microchip information); 2-week supply of food, water, treats, and medication; food/water dishes; poop bags; grooming supplies; toys; and a first aid kit geared towards dogs. Set aside some good pictures of your pet with simple, uncluttered backgrounds, so if you need to make "lost pet" posters, you can. Put this material with the rest of your important papers in a place safe from fire or flood.

To learn more about how to get involved in AKC Pet Disaster Relief at www.akcreunite.org/relief and to donate securely online, go to www.akcreunite.org/donate. To donate to the AKC Humane Fund’s Sandy Fund or any other programs, visit www.akchumanefund.org. The Houston Kennel Club and other local area kennel clubs are advocating for monetary donations to be made to AKC Reunite when asked for where to send money to help

our canine friends. The Puli Club of America Board voted to donate $1,000 to the AKC Reunite Program after Hurricane Harvey, and this donation was matched by Barbara and Bob Amen from the Greater St. Louis Train-ing Club and also WalMart to become a $3,000 donation.

I’m happy to report that, as far as I’m aware, all Pulik and their people in this region are safe after the storm, though some are still having difficulty in making their way back home. We now wait to hear about our Puli and human friends in Florida and other areas who are about to be hit by Hurricane Irma.

· Appropriate food, water, health care and shelter. · Emotional requirements of attention, affection and appropriate training.

B. A PULI BREEDER WILL: · Be well-informed about the Standard of our breed. · Be aware that the purpose of breeding is to maintain or improve the quality of

the breed in accordance with the standard. · Use all available means such as knowledge of ancestors, and CHIC testing to

determine that breeding stock is free of inheritable disease. PCA required CHIC testing includes:

1. OFA or Penn Hip for hips 2. OFA for patella 3. OFA Degenerative Myelopathy (DNA test) 4. CERF (Canine Eye Registry)/OFA Eye Registry to be updated

· Enter into all breeding arrangements with written contracts. · Keep accurate and thorough breeding records in full accordance with AKC

requirements. · Prevent all breedings that are not carefully planned and provide adequate

kenneling to prevent accidental or unplanned matings. · Insist that a visiting bitch be in the stud owner’s care and/or supervision

· Not substitute one stud for another without the knowledge and agreement of all parties.

· Pay careful attention to physical and emotional needs of puppies produced.

· Keep all puppies in the litter until they are a minimum of eight (8) weeks of age.

· Be aware at all times that producing puppies is a commitment and they remain responsible for puppies they produce throughout the lifetime of those dogs.

· Breeders are required to provide assistance to dogs of their breeding in need of re-homing, including taking the dogs back and fostering them until they can relocate them to a new home.

LITTER LISTINGS

Breeder Litter listings are accepted from Puli Club of America members in good standing. Litter listings here will also be listed on PCA's web site at www.Puliclub.org/pcabreeders.htm. “In order for a Litter to be listed on the Breeders page in Puli News and Puliclub.org, a breeder must be a general member of PCA in good standing. They must also pay whatever the current fee is for the listing. Proof of the required CHIC health tests for hips, patellas, DM and CERF/OFA Eye Reg-istry for sire and dam must be provided. CERF/OFA Eye Registry testing on sire and dam must have occurred within the last 3 years”

Zeal to produce champions or perpetuate a bloodline must never compromise a breeder's sensitivity to the quality of life that every Puli bred will experience. Breeders must consider the welfare of the Puli above personal gain or profit. Breeders have the responsibility to insure the welfare of all puppies they produce and remain responsible for those Pulik throughout their entire lifetime. Should the situation arise, breeders are required to provide assistance to dogs of their breeding in need of re-homing, including taking the dogs back and fostering them until they can relocate them to a new home.

This wording has been added to insure that breeder's own the ultimate responsibility for the dogs they produce throughout their lifetime. The Puli Club of America Rescue Trust is not responsible for placing dogs bred by known people in the breed, and the Board felt that clear lines need to be established to advise everyone of their responsibility in the future. Should Rescue be advised of a Puli in need of re-homing their first obligation is to try to determine who the breeder is, and then contact that person in order that they can make the necessary

arrangements for their dog.

Note: If the kennel name of the breeder is underlined, it indicates they have a website. Go to puliclub.org and then to the breeder listing. The kennel name is a link to the web-site.
