Bees – HoneyBy Barbara R. Schmitz
Honeybees are social insects with bumblebees being the largest. The honeybee family
consists of the queen, workers and drones.
The queen, with a stinger, develops from fertilized eggs, and matures in 16 days. She is only fed royal jelly for her lifespan which is up to 5 years in the wild. In managed hives she is replaced every 1 or 2 years with a younger queen. The younger queen then lays better eggs and maintains improved control of the hive which helps to prevent swarming. The queen lays about one egg per minute 24 hours a day producing 200,000 eggs per year. If she quits this pace of egg laying, the workers will move a recently laid egg into a queen cell as her replacement. Eggs develop into different kinds of bees depending on what they are fed, the size of their cell in which they develop, and if the egg was fertilized.
Workers, the infertile females with stingers, develop from fertilized eggs who mature in 21 days. They are fed royal jelly for 3 days then a mixture of pollen and nectar called beebread. Tasks include cleaning cells, removing dead bees, building honeycombs, storing pollen and nectar, guarding the hive, ventilating the hive, making honey, and foraging for water and pollen. After she stings, the stinger and venom gland remain in the victim where the venom sac continues to pump and inject venom. The bee eventually dies.
Drones develop from unfertilized eggs and mature in 24 days. They
are fed royal jelly for 3 days then beebread. These guys have no sting-er. Lifespan is up to 56 days. Their job is to mate with the queen.
Generally, bees nest in hollow trees in forests; some in caves; seldom on the ground and nearly always near a water source, a necessity for their survival. The structure usually conforms to the tree’s shape with entrance hole/holes close to the bottom.
Bees see ultraviolet light, color vision except red, and have a superior sense of smell. Bees communicate with each other by pheromones.
Africanized bees (AHB) are nearly pure African and not a new race of honeybee. There are no native honeybees. They have a higher reproductive potential, and they are more aggressive and swarm more frequently than European bees. AHB bees are more nervous when disturbed and will fly and attack everything in their path. They sting more often and will pursue an intruder longer distances. However, the AHB sting isn’t any more dangerous than the domesticated honeybee.
Bees are suffering greatly. Mites and hive beetles can devastate the colony. Foul brood (brood is where the bees raise young) is a long- living bacteria that forms a spore killing the young. Other problems for bees are skunks who will scratch at a hive entrance causing the bees to come out and then the skunks eat them. Birds, wasps, dragonflies, moths, also prey upon the honeybee. Starvation is a great menace. All weed killing products containing neonicotinoids are killing bees.
Without bees our food supply is threatened. Please do what you can to protect them.

Save the Date! October 14, 2020. Meet at the Voigt Center at 9:00 am to caravan to Confluence Park at 310 W. Mitchell St. We will tour the park with Sara Ramirez, of the San Antonio River Foundation.
Lunch will be on your own. Questions? Contact Shirley Fox, Program Leader.
Add compost to your yard and flowerbeds for a little extra kick that tired flowers need. Feed all landscape plants. Prune back roses 1/3, and feed. Prune salvia greggii by 1/3. Cut back perennials for fall blooming. Flowering annuals can be transplanted now: alyssum, calendula, dianthus (pinks), flowering cabbage and kale, marimums, pansies, petunias, phlox, shasta daisies, snapdragons, and stock. Plant broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. Begin planting wildflower seed. Plant bluebonnet seeds about ½ inch deep now to allow them to germinate in the fall. Water thoroughly.
You can plant trees and shrubs this month, but, next month would be even better. Check out the requirements for trees and do your planning before planting. Consider planting native trees. Remember, if you are cutting your OAK TREES:
CUT, PAINT, CUT, PAINT. It is very important to paint all cuts. And DON’T FORGET TO GET A PERMIT!!
Keep birdbaths full and clean. Clean water is in short supply and is essential to the birds and butterflies. Continue to keep Hummingbird feeders full and clean. They are still around, and migration is starting.
Monarch butterflies are also migrating and will want to rest, eat, and lay their eggs. Butterfly weed is their favorite plant, so you might want to plant one or more. Put out water for the deer and other wildlife.
Drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, and work in your yard/garden early in the morning or late in the evening. And remember to add mosquito repellant to your outdoor activities. Get rid of all standing water, and use mosquito dunks if necessary.
Come “grow” with us.

Bala Krishna “Beekay” Srinivas (born Bindiganavale Krishnaiyengar Srinivas) died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes on the morning of Monday, July 20th, 2020 at his home in San Francisco, CA.
The 2nd of 8 children of BR Krishna Iyengar and BS Lakshamma, Beekay was born on April 13, 1930 in
Bangalore (now Bengaluru), India. After spending his childhood in Hyderabad—and seeing the country of his birth win its independence when he was just 17 years old—he left to earn his B.Sc. at Loyola College in Madras (now Chennai), India in 1948. In 1950, he returned to Hyderabad to earn his B.E. at Osmania University, where he was named captain of the university’s tennis team.
In February 1956, Beekay first achieved his dream of moving to the United States when he began a Master’s program at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, graduating with an M.E. in 1957. Having returned to India after graduation, he married Dr. Sanyogita “Geeta” Srinivas (née Rao) on Sept 10, 1958. On September 8th, 1959, the couple gave birth to their only child, Vinita. Seven years later, Beekay moved back to the United States with his family, this time to Mayfield Heights, OH.
After working at The Warner & Swasey Co. in Cleveland, OH as a Mechanical Engineer for 13 years, Beekay and Geeta moved to Hollywood Park, TX in 1979, where he was first elected to the city council in 1985. Three years later, he was then elected as Hollywood Park’s first Indian-American mayor, going on to serve three terms.
In 1997, two years after Geeta’s sudden passing, Beekay decided to leave Texas and move to San Francisco to live with his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren.
A life-long member of the Lions Club and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Beekay will be remembered for how much he loved to travel, take pictures, play tennis, read Urdu poetry, have red wine with dinner, tell jokes, and spend time with his grandchildren.
Beekay is survived by his daughter, Vinita, son-in-law, Benoît, and two grandchildren, Maxim and Gita, in San Francisco, CA; by his brother, BK Harinath, in Mysuru, India; and by his sister, Bharathi Anantharam, in Bengaluru, India.
His last words were: “Thank you.”
“Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, Or what's a heaven for?” — Robert Browning
