Milton Keynes based Willen Hospice, is

a charity that offers specialist palliative

care for people in the local community.

With a dedicated nursing and care team,

it looks after over 250 patients a year that

are suffering from life limiting illnesses.

The hospice has fifteen beds available for

patients and also provides a Well Being

Day Centre as well as home care. Provision

of this care means that the charity has to

raise 4.6 million every year and 78% of

this funding comes from the community.

With over 600 volunteers, the charity

Having the transport to deliver and collect furniture is the backbone of our retail

operations. In order to raise as much money as possible we need to keep stocking our

shops and deliver to our customers. We have a good relationship with Volkswagen

Group Leasing as they are literally across the road. However we chose to go with them

because they were able to offer us a flexible and manageable leasing contract and were

able to provide a van that is proven to be reliable and efficient. This is imperative for a

charity that needs to manage costs effectively and be confident that volunteer drivers

are safe and comfortable in the vehicle they are driving.

The van is under contract for two years and includes service and maintenance.

    The van is driven by

It is also used to deliver

    furniture to customers.

    The changing view of

    telematics

SaveOne of the main measurable benefits

of telematics systems is controlling and

reducing fuel bills. Even with todays low oil

prices, fuel is said to make up at least 30% of

a fleets running costs. With the telematics

    systems online zoomable maps, managers

get a better view of vehicles to efficiently plan

jobs at the start of the day and maximise

productivity. In addition with real time

tracking organisations can cut the number

of miles travelled and fuel consumption by

    locating nearest drivers to jobs.

of company car drivers actively changed driving behaviour to improve their fuel economy

    40%

Even though telematics has been around for over twenty years now, there is still

some hesitancy from organisations to implement this technology. Some people

still view vehicle and driver monitoring as sinister as Big Brother, but in reality

it can increase productivity, reduce costs and improve driver safety.

    10

  • MonitorTelematics systems also give you the

    capability to monitor driver behaviour

    and encourage better driving techniques.

In fact telematics may be one of the main

protagonists that is changing the way fleet

vehicles are being driven for the better. In

recent research from RAC Business*, 40% of

company car drivers actively changed driving

behaviour to improve their fuel economy,

compared to 27% of private vehicle owners.

As well as the HMRC cuts to company car

fuel allowances, the RAC attributes this

change in behaviour to in-car technology

that allows drivers to personally monitor fuel

consumption and to telematic systems that

    monitor speed and journeys.

ProtectTelematics can also support Duty of Care

obligations and can help with ascertaining

    responsibilities if incidents occur. Knowing

where your drivers are and how they are

driving can help improve driver behaviour

and reduce risk. Whats more, in one

particular case a local council used its

telematics system to protect its drivers from

false allegations given by residents who had

accused council vans of damaging their cars.

When insurance claims came in the council

checked them against the actual location and

times recorded by the telematics technology^

and it was found beyond doubt that some

claims were untrue. BenefitSo on a financial and ethical side, telematics

is a valuable tool for both the organisation

and the driver. As more systems are

being installed, we will see even greater

    measurable benefits, from reduced fuel

costs, maximising work loads through to

ensuring drivers are safer on the roads

and for public sector organisations this is

    critical to maintaining excellent community

services, whilst staying in budget. Those

that still view telematics as Big Brother

will most certainly be left on the roadside.

*RAC Business motoring survey - 20th January 2015^Case study taken from a leading telematics company

    Driving seat with sales support

In this issue we have put one of our Public

    Sector Sales Support Advisors Luke

Purnell in the driving seat and asked

    him for his thoughts.

What do you like most about working

    for Volkswagen Group Leasing /

    Volkswagen Financial Services (UK) Ltd?

The company as a whole is fantastic but

the team I work with is probably the

    highlight for me.

What was your first proper job?

After finishing school, I started working on

a building site in London doing commercial

glazing. I was leaving the house at 5.30am

and getting home at 7pm usually 6 days a

week so I thought Id take a career change

    and go to university!

If you werent a Public Sector Sales

Support Advisor, what would you do?

Growing up I wanted to be a pilot so Id

probably try joining the RAF and get into

    it that way.

What are you listening to in the car?

I tend to plug in my phone and have a

playlist on Spotify called 50 shades of

funk which is full of classics.

Whats the biggest thing on your agenda

    this year?

Trying to get on the global assignment

    scheme that Volkswagen Financial

Services provide as I would like to try

    working abroad for a year.

  • If you were Prime Minister for the day,

whats the first thing you would do?

I would ban TOWIE and all the similar type

of programmes from being shown on TV.

If you could own any vehicle what

    would you choose?

Id probably have an Aston Martin DB5.

Whats the daftest thing you have done?

Extending my overdraft after I finished my

final university exams has to be up there,

but I still had a great time though.

Where is the best place you have visited?

I went to a festival in Croatia in the summer

which was pretty special and somewhere

that I shall be visiting again.

Government funding given to local authorities who take up ultra-low emission vehicles

Local authorities are invited to bid for a share

of the 35 million Go Ultra Low City Scheme

which they can use in a range of ways to

    support ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs),

such as installing charge-points for electric

cars and introducing low emission zones.

Other measures they can use the fund for include

changing planning rules to make it easier to

    install electric vehicle charge-points, trialling

    new technology and encouraging workplace

    schemes.

Up to four cities with the best proposals stand to

get a share of the money. Not only will the fund

help improve air quality across the country but it

will boost local economies by creating more jobs.

The Go Ultra Low City Scheme compliments

other schemes to support low emission vehicle

schemes, such as the 30 million

bus scheme and the 20 million taxi scheme.

It amounts to a comprehensive package of

    government support to encourage more

    environmentally friendly travel.

    Ultra-low emission vehicles

For local authorities that have submitted their

bids, think of Volkswagen Group Leasings

finance packages that give you flexible monthly

payments for all vehicle procurement. Whats

more we are able to offer a number of ultra-

low emission vehicles including the electric

    Volkswagen e-up! and e-golf.

  • Chat with a Fleet Manager

Falling oil prices help businesses cut fleet costs

Fuel expenditure is said to make up around

30% of a fleets running costs, so with petrol

prices at the lowest they have been for years,

fleet overheads have been reduced . Over the

past six months the price of a barrel of oil has

    halved in Januarys World Economic

    Forum, BPs group chief executive,

Bob Dudley, said that he expected oil

to remain at current low levels for up

    to three years.

The Financial Conduct Authority cleans up the broker sector with new rules

    Many fleet managers purchase vehicles

    through specialist fleet lending and

    insurance brokers. However, with more

than 50,000 brokers across the UK, the

market has been difficult to monitor and

police, which means the system has been left

open to misuse. Lenders have been accused

of not being transparent and forthcoming

    with commissions and allegiances and,

in addition, many have not made it clear

that there are alternatives on the market,

squeezing out competition and being unfair

    to the consumer.

    New rules and regulations

The new rules will hopefully restrict the

    activities of the unscrupulous boiler-room

    car brokerage firms, offering too-good-to-

be-true leasing deals, who then take deposit

monies and then disappear. Even though the

public sector generally has to source through

    the Crown Commercial Services framework,

the whole lending industry suffers as

reputations fall and somewhere along the

line someone has to pay for it.

New regulations mean that the FCA has to

conduct an in-depth level of due diligence on

all those seeking authority to offer a credit

service, before they are issued with a licence.

The best brokers will be the ones that offer

various funding options and have direct

    relationships with the manufacturer. And

if uncertainty is still aroused, brokers will

have to provide a robust operational history

    and testimonials. However, whatever the

situation, it is always worth doing a thorough

check yourself or using a finance company

    that you know of already.

Fleet registrations hit a seven year high in 2014

Fleet registrations rose 8.7%, up to

    1,178,416, and together with business

sales, were responsible for over 52% of

    all new registrations in 2014.

As fleets seek lower running costs, demand

for more efficient cars has grown. Forecasts

from the BVRLA expect to see average

CO2 emissions for fleets fall below 120g/

km of CO2 for the first time in 2015. The

association also predicts a continued trickle

away from diesel cars into smaller-engined

    petrol or hybrid vehicles.

    Registrations for commercial vehicles also

hit a seven-year high, with an 11% growth

on 2013. More than 320,000 vans were

registered in 2014, up 18.7% on 2013 figures.

According to the latest data from Oxford

Economics, the UK rental and leasing sector

    purchases more than 1.5million vehicles

    (including 308,000 UK-made vehicles)

per annum. The sector therefore makes

a huge contribution to UK GDP, bringing

the newest, cleanest and safest vehicles onto

    UK roads.

Its your duty to inform employees of new drug driving laws

Nearly 50 per cent of UK drivers are unaware that new

drug driving law were introduced on the 1st March 2015.

As well as illegal drugs that may affect your driving, the new law

now states that some prescriptions drugs will also be monitored

    Unlike Volkswagens other electric vehicles

(the e-up! and e-Golf) which are sold through

a network of 25 e-Retailers, the GTE will

be available through all of the companys

    franchised sales outlets.

The name of Golf GTE reflects its standing

in the line-up alongside the petrol-powered

GTI and diesel GTD, while its pricing also

reinforces this position. The new car is

driven by two engines: a 1.4-litre 150 PS TSI

electric motor. Together, they produce a

maximum power of 204 PS and a theoretical

The electric motor is integrated into the

and an electric air conditioning compressor

make for energy-efficient braking and air

    of up to 81 mph.

With the TSI engine engaged as well, the

Golf GTE can sprint from zero to 62 mph in

7.6 seconds and on to 138 mph, yet returns a

    lights (e-Golf) and aerodynamic horizontal

fins (GTI). Where the GTI features red, the

GTE has blue accents, including across the

radiator grille and into the headlights (which

as on the e-Golf are LED), while 18-inch

Serron alloy wheels are fitted as standard.

Inside too, the GTIs red highlights are turned

to blue including the stitching on the steering

wheel, gear lever gaiter and seats, and a blue

stripe in the tartan pattern on the sports seats.

    Touchscreen infotainment system with DAB

radio and Bluetooth is standard, while optional

navigation includes bespoke EV features such

as the ability to identify potential destinations

on electric range, and charging points.

The GTE also has an e-manager which allows

the driver to preset vehicle charging, as

well as interior cooling or heating and these

functions can be operated remotely using

the Car-Net app on a smartphone; a three-

year subscription is standard in the UK. The

speedometer and tachometer are familiar, and

the latter is supplemented by a power meter in

the central display, which shows the status of

the battery, whether or not power is being used

and the intensity of any regeneration.
