Welcome to Business Continuity Training

A message from the Director of Training Charlie Maclean-Bristol FBCI

The Business Continuity Institute (BCI) was founded in 1994 to enable individuals working within the Business

Continuity Management (BCM) industry to gain guidance and support from fellow practitioners. Business Continuity

Training Ltd (BCT) is a training partner of the BCI. We offer the BCI Licensed Good Practice Guidelines entry level training

course, based upon the BCI’s Good Practice Guidelines 2013, as preparation for the BCI Certificate Examination – the

fundamental building block for individuals to gain professional competence to fulfil BCM roles. During 2014/15 we have

seen pass rates of nearly 97% which is a credit to our outstanding team of trainers and delivery of our courses.

In recent years we have expanded our training portfolio to offer a wide range of courses across the globe, both

publically-run and in-house. Together with the most experienced trainers in the industry, BCT have been successfully

delivering these courses since 2008. We are proud to have been shortlisted for the BCI Continuity and Resilience Provider of the Year (Service/Product) Award 2015.

Charlie Maclean-Bristol FBCI

Business Continuity (BC) is about managing the risks that may threaten your organisation. Putting a business continuity process in place ensures that vital activities can continue in the face of unforeseen events.

Risks to business disruption include traditional emergencies like fires, floods, earthquakes and tornadoes. You also need to consider the

potential risks from physical and cyber terrorism, cybercrime, computer and telecom failures, theft, employee sabotage and strikes.

Put simply, the Business Continuity process identifies activities that are critical to an organisation and ensures that they are able to function

at a minimum level. It is also about ensuring that the organisation’s assets are resilient and can be recovered in an emergency.

Once activities and assets are identified, a strategy is developed and plans are written and exercised to ensure the organisation’s key

activities can be restored in a timely fashion, while limiting organisational disruption.

Why take the exam?

Professional membership of the BCI provides

internationally recognised status and this valued

certification demonstrates your competence to carry out

Business Continuity Management to a consistently high

standard. If you pass the BCI Certificate you are entitled

to use the post-nominal credential of CBCI and your

name will be placed on a BCI register of those holding

this credential.

Those looking to achieve professional membership

grades within the BCI need to pass the examination and

have at least one year’s industry experience to achieve

AMBCI. MBCI requires a pass with merit and at least three

years industry experience.

What does the exam consist of?

The examination consists of 120 multiple choice

questions which the candidate will have 2 hours

to complete and is based on the BCI Good Practice

Guidelines 2013.

20 of the 120 questions are designated “pre-test”

questions which are randomly distributed throughout

the exam. Pre-test questions are not counted in scoring.

They are, however, essential in building the BCI Certificate

question bank and are on the exam to statistically assess

their difficulty level and effectiveness at discriminating

between candidates who meet the passing standard

and those who do not. The information gathered in the

pre-test process determines whether the question will be

included on a future exam.

The questions are weighted and the examination is

marked out of a total of 500. A score of 425 is required to

pass the exam with merit.

The majority of BCT students pass the exam, even those

who have little or no previous experience of Business

Continuity. The BCT pass mark is well above the 68%

average pass mark worldwide.

When can I take the exam?

1. On the Friday morning of any BCI Licensed Good

Practice Guidelines Course.

2. Arrange to take the online examination. A webcam

and microphone are essential.

8

The BCI Certificate Examination (CBCI) £375 2 Hours/Multiple Choice

This exam is generally taken in conjunction with the BCI Licensed Good Practice Guidelines Course (GPG CBCI) or the BCI ELearning course. However, it is also open for experienced business continuity practitioners to take without training. Once you have passed, you can gain membership of the Business Continuity Institute.

Successful incident management comes from a

coordinated set of team responses following a set of

prepared and rehearsed plans. At the top of the structure

is the top management (often called the Incident

Management Team during an incident) who need to

deal with the strategic issues - communication, serious

welfare issues and the direction of recovery; whilst

keeping a close eye on their reputation, regulatory and

legal obligations.

What is covered:

• What is an incident - how does it affect an

organisation?

• What are its characteristics and how do they develop?

• What distinguishes an effective from an ineffective

response?

• How can we develop a structure that gives us the best

chance of success?

• How do individuals react to incidents and how can we

prepare them to react better?

• What are the responsibilities of the top team? How

should the media be handled?

• What resources and facilities do the team require?

What does an incident management plan contain?

• How do you train and exercise the team? How do you

make IM exercises effective and involving?

• What are the quick wins? How are you going to

implement what you have learned?

BCT offers this two day course in several locations

throughout the UK and it is run on a Thursday and Friday.
