This month on SchoolTV - School Transitions

Whether it is starting school for the first time, moving up toa higher grade or embarking on a journey through secondaryschool, there is no doubt that any school transition is a veryexciting time for children and parents. It means your childrenare growing up!

However, transitioning is an ongoing process. It can continuelong after students have entered their new environment andmay encounter difficulties at a number of different stages. These stressors may appear as anxiety and frustration andresult in negative or disruptive behaviours. Such behaviourscan become problematic making the transitioning process evenmore difficult for children and parents.

If you have any concerns about your child, please contact theschool guidance officer for further information.

Junior Secondary News

YEAR 7 PARENT EVENING

THURSDAY 21 FEBRUARYProserpine State High School Resource Centre (Library) at

6:30pm.

Policies and procedures of Proserpine State High School willbe discussed and an opportunity to meet some of the Year 7teachers. Have a cuppa and a chat with your child’s teachers.

** Please bring along your child’s Student Diary and theAssessment Schedule.

Please note: Students do not need to attend.

Welcome to the new and returning families to Proserpine StateHigh School, especially those joining us in the Junior Secondaryyear levels for the first time. This year we have had a numberof new enrolments in Junior Secondary at Proserpine StateHigh School. To these new students and their families I offera particularly warm welcome as they become part of theProserpine State High School community. The majority ofstudents have settled quickly into their classes and havecommenced work on their first units of work. Many staff havecommented on the excellent start that Junior Secondarystudents have made to the school year.

THE 5 PS

This year you may hear students begin to talk about the 5Ps:

The 5Ps represent the expectations of students in JuniorSecondary classrooms and will assist in creating positivelearning environments in all classrooms.

UNIFORM

It was great to see so many Junior Secondary students arriveat school last week wearing the correct school uniform. Whenthe student group wear the correct uniform it creates a senseof belonging and pride in the school which contributes to thedevelopment of a positive school culture.

A couple of important points for new families regarding uniform-

The school diary contains a detailed outline of the PSHSUniform Policy. Parents should refer to this, in the first instance,if they have questions regarding uniform.

If there is an instance when a student is unable to wear thecorrect uniform parents should provide a written note.

ORGANISATION

Being organised is one of the keys to success and atProserpine State High School and we provide many strategiesto improve student organisation:

GOAL SETTING

All students in Junior Secondary will be asked by their teachersto set an individual learning goal for each of their subjects at thebeginning of every term. Teachers will guide students throughthe process of setting a realistic and achievable goal during thefirst weeks of this term. Individual goal setting has been shownto have the following advantages-

• Be Prepared

• Be Persistent

• Be Positive

• Be Proud

• Be a Participant

• School shoes, including sole, must be completelyblack.

• The school broad brimmed hat is the only acceptablehat for use at school. Caps are no longer to be wornat school. All new students and Year 7 studentsshould have received a complimentary hat whenpurchasing uniforms. For all other students, replacement hats can be purchased through theuniform shop.

• Timetable – Each student should have received theirTerm One timetable. It is advisable to keep thistimetable in the plastic sleeve in their diary. It is also agood idea to make an additional copy of thetimetable to keep as a reference at home.

• Diary – By now each student should have beenissued with a school diary. This diary is an invaluabletool to help students organise their school life. Itcontains many of the policies that students andparents may need to refer to throughout the year. Italso contains pages for students to record remindersabout important aspects of the school term, includinghomework, upcoming assessment and personallearning goals. This diary should be taken to everyclass and year level assemblies.

• Coloured Folders - Each student has been issuedwith a set of coloured folders. These folders assiststudents in organising the requirements for each oftheir subjects. For example the red coloured foldershould contain a student’s Mathematics notebookand any other documents related to this subject.Specific subject folders must be taken to timetabledsubjects.

• Improves academic achievement.

• Challenge students

• Builds confidence

• Establishes long term vision

• Instils self-efficacy

Goal setting for each core subject should be completed by theend of Week 3.

I would encourage parents and carers to contact Year LevelCoordinator to discuss any concerns relating to their child’sgeneral well-being throughout the year.

BEHAVIOUR AND EFFORT INCENTIVE 2018 -THANK YOU

On the 12 December 2018, Junior Secondary held their annualBehaviour and Effort Incentive Day. The school organised forwater slides, jumping castles, bumper balls and a climbing wallto be on-site through the day. It was a huge success anda great reward for those students who earned at least onebehaviour and effort certificate in 2018.

On behalf of all Junior Secondary students, I would like toextend my gratitude to the Proserpine State High School P&CAssociation for their continued support of junior secondary.Without a generous contribution by the P&C Association, theday would not have been as successful.

An outline of what I do

The SBYHN works with students and school community onissues that may affect the health and wellbeing of young peopleand the school community as a whole. This includes helpingwith curriculum, teaching and learning activities, providinghealth information and referral, supporting the development ofthe environment and school culture that supports health andwellbeing, and working with the community and other services.

The SBYHN can provide health and wellbeing informationabout:

Confidentiality

Young people have a right to confidentiality when accessinghealth services. As a health service provider the SBYHNrespects this but there are some things the nurse must refer oract upon.

In most cases, it is best for young people to talk to theirparents about health and wellbeing issues. I can supportyoung people to do this.

Getting the best help for health

At times other services can provide more appropriate or furtherhelp or support for young people. The SBYHN will discuss theoptions for working with other services or linking young peoplewith the right services.

The SBYHN does not provide:

Student appointments can be made to see me before or afterschool, or during breaks.

Back to School 2019 started with staff and volunteers needingtheir “running shoes” on when the Uniform Store opened onMonday 21 January. A new system was trialed this yearhopefully improving the flow of people and ensuring customerswere served in order of arrival. Due to our extended tradingcommencing on the last week of the school holidays, we are

• healthy eating and physical activity

• feeling unhappy or stressed

• relationships

• healthy skin

• personal and family problems

• growth and development

• sexual health

• smoking, alcohol and other drugs.

able to utilise the whole of the Student Advisory Centre. Weasked families to walk around the uniform end of the buildingand enter via the back door. Here customers were greetedby volunteers who gave them a number and then asked themto proceed to the meeting room to wait (if necessary). Theywere handed a uniform order for them to complete their studentdetails to commence the order process. This was a great timesaver and preparation for when the volunteers next becameavailable. I know that on two days waiting times were up to 15minutes which is regrettable but I assure you every effort wasmade to keep this time to a minimum. Thankfully our weatherwas kind to us which allowed an easy walk on the grass aroundthe building.

Thank you to the families who visited the store last week fortheir positive and cheery attitude. It is greatly appreciated whenparents and students happily work with our wonderful teamof volunteers and I hope you found your visit to the storewelcoming, friendly and efficient.

Each day we had between 8-10 volunteers on hand and I thankthis very willing and dedicated team who show up each yearfor the BTS marathon. I have signs displayed in the store thatsay “Please respect our volunteers – they are all that standsbetween us and mayhem”. This is never truer than at thebeginning of each year!! Collectively our volunteers racked upin excess of 210 hours for the week. Two of our volunteers onhand were ex-students and only 2 of the remaining 8 ladiescurrently have children attending Proserpine State High School. We presently boast 6 volunteers who are ex Proserpine StateHigh School parents or have come from within the widercommunity. Thank you to the many families who expressedtheir appreciation of the service our volunteers offered. Manycommenting how nice it was to have a “personal shopper” and“that was easier than I thought it was going to be”. Overallapproximately 375 customers were served over the week whichequates to one transaction being processed through the tillevery 3.2 minutes.

Unfortunately, due to the heavy demand on sport polos for thePositive Cultural Day we have run out of some sizes. An orderhas been placed this week and families will be advised when ithas been received. This time of year it is usually a 3 month leadtime on orders.

A common question asked last week was “Do we have to wearthe school’s black shorts or can we purchase our own?” The 3styles of shorts embroidered with Proserpine State High Schooland sold by the store are those approved by the school and

P&C Association. We ask all families to support the school’sUniform Policy and purchase only school uniform items.

Now that the store has returned to normal hours of operation(Monday and Wednesday 8.30am to 10.30am), I remindeveryone that access to the Uniform Store will revert back tothe Ruge Street entry. If students need to visit the store fromwithin the grounds, they are asked to walk across the grass atthe front of the Student Advisory Centre and enter via the frontdoor.

Keeping things uniform,
