Charles Lloyd’s story is a special one, and it intersects with important moments in jazz history. Lloyd grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and had early contact both to masters of an increasingly sophisticated jazz tradition and the raw voices of the blues. Booker Little was a childhood friend, Phineas Newborn a mentor. In his teens Lloyd hit the road with Howlin’ Wolf. He befriended Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry and Billy Higgins in a period when blueprints for musical freedom were redrawn, and replaced Eric Dolphy in Chico Hamilton’s band, building a reputation as an exceptional saxophonist and a composer of strikingly original melodies. His own groups drew together some of the day’s most exciting players, and his late 60s quartet with Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette made a huge impact, playing opposite Hendrix and Janis Joplin at the Fillmore Auditorium, touring Europe’s festivals to great acclaim, making a now-legendary foray into the Soviet Union, and selling a million copies of their Forest Flower album, a massive FM radio hit. Then Lloyd retreated from the limelight, preferring to play his flute in the mountain forests of Big Sur. For almost two decades sightings of him in jazz contexts were rare. A tentative return was made in the company of pianist Michel Petrucciani; the 1989 ECM recording Fish Out Of Water, with Bobo Stenson, Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen signalled a new beginning. Since then he’s led a succession of outstanding bands including the recent quartet with Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland. JAZZ/CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 28/7/2014

Jacques Loussier

My Personal Favorites: The Jacques Loussier Trio Plays Bach

TEL3531902 888072353190 CD2 TELARC £8.49 JAZZ/CLASSICAL In a career that spans more than a half century, pianist and composer Jacques

Loussier has built an enormous body of work by blurring the lines between

classical and jazz and selling more than six million albums worldwide in the process. Telarc celebrates Loussier’s 80th birthday (on 26 October 2014) with

the release of two collections that provide a cross section of his masterful fusion of classical tradition with the jazz idiom.

‘My Personal Favorites: The Jacques Loussier Trio Plays Bach’ and ‘Beyond Bach: Other Composers I Adore’ are two specially priced 2CD sets, each with tracks chosen by Loussier as personal favourites. Beginning in 1959 with his Play Bach Trio, and later with alternate lineups that explored numerous other classical artists, Loussier and his various collaborators forced musicians and audiences of both jazz and classical music to re-evaluate the boundaries - and indeed the similarities - between their respective genres. The Bach collection principally features the trio that Loussier formed in 1985. “His personal selection of pieces from his Bach repertoire looks back on the one hand to his earliest triumphs, but also shows how the trio has developed and responded to the music over time,” says jazz historian Alyn Shipton, author of the liner notes for both collections. Personnel: Jacques Loussier (piano), Vincent Charbonnier, Benoit Dunoyer de Segonzac (bass), André Arpino (drums) Disc 1: 1. Air on a G String 2. Fugue No. 5 in D major 3. Pastorale in C minor 4. Beyond Bach: Other Composers I Adore

TEL3534202 888072353428 CD2 TELARC £8.49 JAZZ/CLASSICAL In a career that spans more than a half century, pianist and composer Jacques Loussier has built an enormous body of work by blurring the lines between

classical and jazz and selling more than six million albums worldwide in the process. Telarc celebrates Loussier’s 80th birthday (on 26 October 2014) with

‘Beyond Bach’ includes Loussier’s interpretations of pieces by Vivaldi, Satie, Debussy, Mozart, Chopin and others. The Vivaldi concerto here demonstrates how successfully Loussier applied his jazz approach to a classical composer. Instead of the strong harmonic development of J.S. Bach, with its affinities to jazz structure, Vivaldi deals in songlike melodies. The Debussy album, meanwhile, remains “the masterpiece of the latter-day trio,” says jazz historian Alyn Shipton, author of the liner notes for both collections. “Listen to ‘Clair de Lune,’ and revel in its liquid beauty as you join Jacques in celebrating his 80th birthday.” Personnel: Jacques Loussier (piano), Vincent Charbonnier, Benoit Dunoyer de Segonzac (bass), André Arpino (drums) Disc 1: 1. Söndörgo Tamburocket - Hungarian Fireworks

TUGCD1084 605633008425 CD RIVERBOAT £6.70 WORLD Fast and furious, fingers flying with a fiery panache, the Hungarian group Söndörgo are one of the most exciting bands in Europe. With their signature

instrument, the tambura, the band brilliantly combines respect for tradition with a desire to innovate and a fizzing virtuosity.

Listening to the band play, you soon hear it’s nothing like traditional violin-led Hungarian music. Söndörgő’s sound is light, springy and delicately plucked. Their signature instrument is the tambura, a mandolin-like instrument, probably of Turkish origin, used by the South Slav (Serbian and Croatian) communities in Hungary. The band is made up of three brothers, Áron, Benjamin and Salamon Eredics, plus cousin Dávid Eredics and Attila Buzás, the only non-family member, on bass tambura. Áron Eredics is also part of the band Vujicsics, winners of Hungary’s most prestigious state-sponsored cultural award, the Kossuth Prize, in 2014. ‘Tamburocket’ is Söndörgő’s second international release and features revived tunes drawn from the rich Hungarian archives and annals of the countries esteemed song-collectors and musicologists of yore. Tracks:

1. Jozo 2. Marice 3. Evo Srcu 4. Hulusination 5. Drago Kolo 6. Hulusi 7. Srpski Madjarik 8. Archive Track 9. Majka Kceru 10. Natrag Dosla 11. Landing Cocek 12. Kolovodja Live dates: Jul 25 Womad, Malmesbury, Wiltshire

The Gascoyne / O'Higgins Quartet

The Real Note Vol. 2

JITCD1461 5032396014618 CD JAZZIZIT RECORDS £6.15 JAZZ Following on from the acclaimed 2012 Jazzizit release ‘Got the Real Note’ bassist Geoff Gascoyne and saxophonist Dave O’Higgins join forces again for

another collection of catchy contrafacts (new compositions based on well known standards). Once again they are joined by Graham Harvey on piano and

Sebastiaan de Krom on drums. The CD opens with the burning minor blues, “Darkness” written by Gascoyne with a sound reminiscent of the Branford Marsalis Quartet. Other songs include the O’Higgins’ composition “Shark Avenue”, a new contrafact written on the jazz standard “Green Dolphin Street” that showcases O’Higgins‘ elegant soprano playing. There is a traditional rendition of Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady” plus a lightning fast “Broadway”. Other highlights include the contrafacts “Embrace” (Embracable You) and “Autopsy” (Topsy). Gascoyne’s beautiful composition “Dedication” displays the delicate touch of pianist Graham Harvey and swinging drummer Sebastiaan de Krom flexes his jazz-chops on the O’Higgins composition “RSVP” (based on Invitation). The album was recorded totally live at Dave’s own JVG studio in Brixton, London, all in one afternoon. Personnel: Geoff Gascoyne (bass) Dave O'Higgins (saxophone), Graham Harvey (piano), Sebastiaan de Krom (drums) Tracks: Darkness / Shark Avenue / Five Moods / Vision / I Got Arrythmia / Sophisticated Lady / RSVP / Embrace / Autopsy / Dedication / Broadway Album Launch - 25th July Wigmore Hall, London

SOUL/JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 28/7/2014

Jeff Cascaro The Soul Sessions (180g Vinyl)

901043HER 4260109010430 LP2 HERZOG RECORDS £11.99 SOUL/JAZZ Compilation of the best tracks from German soul/jazz vocalist/trumpeter Jeff Cascaro, taken from the three album’s he has recorded for Herzog Records. Jeff

has been credited with helping to revitalise the Soul Jazz scene in Germany. His albums ‘Soul of a Singer’ (2006), ‘Mother and Brother’ (2008) and ‘The Other Man’ (2012) were all successful in Germany and helped change the musical scene there. Catchy songs following in the tradition of Curtis Mayfield, Wilson Pickett and Marvin Gaye are in vogue again. His music has even crossed over to the UK soul scene. In a review of ‘Mother and Brother’ SoulandJazzandFunk.com stated, “It has neat, tight beats, a warm, husky vocal and a lovely Rhodes sequence courtesy of Ulf Kleiner. Indeed much of this album’s attraction comes from the skill of the players behind the voice. Cascaro has been lucky to find a team that can perfectly deliver his musical message...it's been constructed with respectful devotion to the principles of soul and jazz.” Soul music originates in the vinyl era, so label boss Rüdiger Herzog personally compiled this double 180 gram vinyl album. Classics like “Holler”, “Roots”, “Soul of a Singer” are complemented with cover versions and ballads that show Jeff Cascaro’s creativity in all its facets. Disk 1: Holler / Waiting / Soul Of A Singer / Love Will Find A Way / The Sun Is Shining For Our Love / Follow You, Follow Me / Love Is In The Air / I'll Be Fine Disk 2: Gettin' Started / The Other Man / The Girl Who Got Away / Beale Street / You / Roots / Going Home / Let's Stay Together / Do You Believe

Tammurriata Di Scafati Bum!

FT61 8018550060711 CD FELMAY £7.99 WORLD The legendary folk group Tammurriata di Scafati perform the stories and

sounds associated with the area around Vesuvius which they immortalised in

their 1997 album ‘O Vesuvio’, eight songs of which are re-interpreted on this recording.

The basis of the tammurriata, a folk dance from Southern Italy, is the sound of the tammorra, a giant tambourine/frame drum. This provides the insistent rhythm that urges the singers on as they take turns improvising verses based on traditional songs while the dancers perform a sensual dance. The tammurriata with its music and dance is regarded by many in the region as more important than any of the religious and secular feast days. In addition to the varied repertoire of the tammurriata, this CD also features the tradition of tarantelle from other provinces and serenades from Naples. Tracks: Incenziata / Tarantella D'a Fatica / 'O 'Nnammurato Mio / Tammuriata Smurfiosa / Cilentana / Filastrocca De Sant'Angulo / All'Avvocata / Fronna 'E Limone / Alla Paisana / Tammuriata D'o Piett / Suspiro. Rocca-Benigni Duo Upset.

FT60 8018550060704 CD FELMAY £7.99 WORLD The passionate, virtuosic performance by Paolo Rocca (clarinets) and Fiore

Benigni (melodeon) combines harmonic and rhythmic complexity with diverse musical idioms.

The duo draw on Klezmer, Gypsy, Brazilian and Romanian music and even modern tango-jazz, but always with constant reference to Italian folk tradition. It ranges from Bach to a tarantella as the duo reveals how the same sound unites such apparently disparate music. Such is the creative magic of extraordinary pair of musicians.
