Josh Rouse - The Embers Of Time CDYEP2416 634457241626 CD YEP ROC ROCK £7.99 LPYEP2416 634457241619 LP YEP ROC ROCK £10.99 Hailed for his "sharp wit" by Rolling Stone and as "a talent to outrank Ryan Adams or Conor Oberst" by Uncut, Rouse has long since solidified his status as a songwriter of the highest caliber over his ten preceding studio releases, but as he navigated the unfamiliar terrain of his forties while writing ‘The Embers of Time’, he found himself facing difficult questions.

Album opener "Some Days I'm Golden All Night" finds comfort in accepting that there are no easy answers. The album's laidback, countrypolitan vibe - captured in part in Rouse's studio in Valencia and in part in his former American home base of Nashville with producer Brad Jones - continues on "Too Many Things On My Mind," which was inspired by economist E.F. Schumacher's book Small Is Beautiful.

Simplification is a recurring theme on the album, as the pedal steel and harmonica drenched "New Young" finds Rouse "making plans to move out to the country," and "Crystal Falls" is propelled by uncomplicated rhythm from an unexpected source. "I didn't want the record to come off as overly serious, so it was important to me that songs like this have a sense of humor to them." That sense of humour sustains Rouse as he faces down some of life's biggest questions on this record with grace and humility. "Am I a hunter or a fox?" he sings on "Pheasant Feather". 'The Embers Of Time' suggests that Rouse has discovered he may never know the answer, and that's just fine.

Craig Nicholls (The Vines) new solo project White Shadows. The album has been produced by Nick Littlemore from Empire of the Sun and his brother Sam Littlemore. It was engineered and mixed by Nick Launay (Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). It features a

cast of great musicians including the boys Jagwar Ma, Stella from Warpaint, Boy and Bear, Touch Sensitive, Jonti, Jim Mogine, Kirin J Callinan, and Tom from Papa v Pretty.

White Shadows formed thanks to a chance comment. Nick Littlemore - member of Empire of the Sun, Pnau, and producer to many - had read an interview with The Vines' Craig Nicholls, in which the frontman said he'd one day like to make an "electronic Fantasia" record. An unnatural concept to a public familiar with The Vine's raw rock, Littlemore was instantly attracted to the idea. "I thought it would be so cool to make an electronic record with someone with such a wild, colourful voice," says Littlemore. "We got in touch and it turned out he had this collection of songs he'd written. The music was very strong, very simplistic. So we talked about it a fair bit - what he wanted to do with it and where it could go." Nicholls and Littlemore decided to reinvent the songs by blowing them up widescreen. "We wanted to make a transcendental experience," says Littlemore, "something that takes you out of the norm, which to me is what his voice does - make music to match that oversaturated feeling." Gathering an all-star cast of over 40 musicians inside Sydney's 301 studios, legendary British post-punk producer Nick Launay was brought on board to attempt the near-impossible - record every musician in the room jamming to Nicholls' songs at the same time. Benita and Scottish drummer Seb Rochford, Andy Sheppard adds the Norwegian guitarist and electronics wizard Eivind Aarset to his band for ‘Surrounded by Sea’.

With Aarset’s ambient drones and electronic textures as a backdrop, Sheppard and co seem to have even more space to explore than on the saxophonist’s acclaimed Trio Libero recording (2786630). The music embraced here includes new compositions by Sheppard, Benita and Rochford, open improvisations, the Elvis Costello tune “I Want To Vanish”, and the Gaelic traditional ballad “Aoidh, Na Dean Cadal Idir” which appears in three variations, a thematic thread through the album. ‘Surrounded by Sea’ was recorded at Lugano in August-September 2014 with Manfred Eicher producing. The prodigiously gifted Andy Sheppard famously took up the saxophone at 19, inspired by Coltrane, and played his first gig with it three weeks later. After a period in Paris, he returned to the UK in the mid-80s, recording the album ‘Andy Sheppard’ with Steve Swallow as producer, the beginning of a long musical association. Since then he’s recorded extensively and written trans-idiomatic music for ensembles of every size (his Saxophone Massive project has included 200 sax players) as well as for theatre, film, dance and mixed media. Sheppard’s collaborators over the years have ranged from Han Bennink and Joanna MacGregor to Keith Tippett, L. Shankar and Kathryn Tickell. He has played with numerous key jazz artists, including the exceptional composers George Russell, Gil Evans and Carla Bley, and recorded many times with the latter for her ECM-distributed WATT label. Elina Duni Quartet - Dallendyshe £9.49 4709282 602547092823 CD ECM JAZZ On ‘Dallёndyshe’ (“The Swallow”), her second ECM album, Elina Duni sings songs of love and exile. The troubled history of the Balkan regions has inspired many such songs and

the pieces here, primarily from Albanian traditional sources, are interpreted with intensity and insight by Elina and her band.

The Tirana-born and Swiss-raised singer has become an exceptional musical storyteller embodying the songs’ narratives, in a way that transcends genre definitions and language limitations. “This time there is a sense of lightness to the feeling and energy of the album,” says Duni. “Even though we are dealing with tragic themes of exile it is not as dark as ‘Matanё Malit’ [her ECM debut]. One of the fascinating things about music of the Balkans, in a lot of the folk music, is the idea that the pain has to be sung. And in singing you go beyond it. That’s what the blues is about, of course, and you find a similar sensibility in these Albanian songs about exile and lost love.” Duni’s journey to the emotional centre of Albanian song began a decade ago, when she and pianist Colin Vallon were students at Berne’s Hochschule der Kunste. Looking at Albanian folk music rather than jazz standards as an improvisational resource led them to a whole range of discoveries. Elina found her own voice in the old songs, and in reclaiming them could also free them: the quartet’s experimental yet pure acoustic versions have been received with gratitude in Albania where folk themes were once harnessed for propaganda purposes. ‘Dallёndyshe’ was recorded in July 2014 at Studios La Buissonne in Pernes-les-Fontaines in the South of France, and produced by Manfred Eicher. name change in 1968 to The Main Ingredient. Their first album, ‘L.T.D.’ (from the initials of each member), was released in 1970 and consisted of six original songs penned by the group along with a medley of two songs written by Jimmy Webb, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Wichita Lineman," and a cover of The Beatles' "Get Back." Production was primarily by renowned arranger Bert DeCoteaux with one track produced by acclaimed New York conductor/arranger Horace Ott. After a follow-up album, ‘Tasteful Soul’, the group self-produced their third Seeds, which boasted two singles with "Black Seeds Keep On Growing," a black empowerment anthem release, 1971's Black penned by McPherson, reaching No. 15 on the U.S. R&B charts. England, then departed the label and left an 9 songs recorded with Barry in the can. They stayed there until Rhino issued one track, "Faithful" (in mono), as a bonus track on the 1990s CD release of Dusty's 1970 Atlantic album ‘A Brand New Me’. The other tracks didn't surface until a subsequent deluxe reissue of Dusty's landmark 1969 album ‘Dusty in Memphis’ included them as bonus cuts. Now, reissue producer Jim Pierson—who tracked down the missing masters after being lost for over two decades —has assembled all of Dusty's Barry--produced masters and put them together in a single package for the first time to create the third Dusty Springfield Atlantic Records album as planned in 1971. Real Gone Music's release of Faithful presents these historic Barry-Springfield collaborations exactly as they were originally intended to be heard, with the 12 tracks intended for the album release and one intended for single-only release. All tracks are in stereo, while the liner notes, penned by The Second Disc's Joe Marchese. for the label, a double-LP from 1979. Unlike many of his other solo records, Rhapsodies consists of short, largely improvisational pieces (17 in all for a 2-LP set—that's practically Ramones-style for this composer!) that are brimming with the whimsy and prodigious chops we've come to expect from the erstwhile Yes keyboardist. On the lighter side are the opening track, "Pedra da Gavea," which sets keyboard licks and processed vocals to none other than a Bo Diddley beat, and "Swan Lager," which arranges one of the main themes from "Swan Lake" as a reggae number! But Wakeman's closing solo piano take on "Summertime" is nothing short of gorgeous, and reminds us that, lurking behind the prog rock god/clown façade, was a sensitive and fully mature artist…when he wanted to be.
