Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee

London, 1958

JASMCD3044 604988304428 CD JASMINE RECORDS £5.55 BLUES Singer/harmonica player, Sonny Terry and singer/guitarist, Brownie McGhee first joined forces in 1942 and worked together as a duo for more than 40 years. This album brings together two of their classic LPs and one rare EP in one set. Back in the 1950s, before the 60s blues boom, they were among the very first authentic American blues musicians to visit Europe and the first to reach a wider audience in the UK. They first came to Britain in April 1958 and the following month they recorded a number of sessions for Pye Records, including two full sessions on which they were backed by Chris Barber’s Jazz Band. These recordings were issued on two LPs, ‘Sonny, Brownie and Chris’ and ‘Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee in London’, plus an EP, ‘The Bluest’ original vinyl copies of which are still highly prized (and priced!) collectors' items. These really are benchmark recordings. This material has been unavailable for more than a dozen years, which makes this a very welcome reissue. Tracks: Betty And Dupree / No Worries On My Mind / This Little Light Of Mine / Glory / Custard Pie / Key To The Highway / If I Could Only Hear My Mother Pray Again / Brownie’s Blues / Sonny’s Blues / Auto Mechanic Blues / Wholesale And Retail / Black Horse Blues / I Love You Baby / Just A Dream / Hooray (This Woman Is Killing Me) / Change The Lock On My Door / You’d Better Mind / Cornbread, Peas And Black Molasses / Climbing On Top Of The Hill / (I’ve Been) Treated Wrong / Fox Chase / Woman’S Lover Blues / Southern Train / That’s How I Feel (The Way I Feel) / Gone But Not Forgotten

JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 21/7/2014

New York Standards Quartet

The New Straight Ahead

WR4654 0799439087767 CD WHIRLWIND RECORDINGS £7.99 JAZZ ‘The New Straight Ahead’ is the debut Whirlwind Recordings release from the New York Standards Quartet and their fourth album to date. The NYSQ is made up of pianist David Berkman, drummer Gene Jackson, saxophonist Tim Armacost, and double bassist Daiki Yasukagawa. As a band the New York-based unit have developed a near telepathic relationship playing together in a variety of settings since their formation in 2006. Conceptually, the NYSQ strives to develop its own language within the tradition of performing standard jazz repertoire. The Guardian, in a glowing, four-star review of the band’s tour across the UK, asserts the NYSQ is “a group devoted to radical reinvention of famous pop songs and Broadway show tunes. Plenty of contemporary jazz artists do that, but few more divertingly than this vivacious foursome, who delightedly cherish the originals while brusquely deconstructing their harmonies and tweaking their melodies, sometimes only slipping in the original theme on the way out of the piece. This is a collective class act.” Personnel: Tim Armacost (tenor and soprano saxophones), David Berkman (piano), Daiki Yasukagawa (double bass), Gene Jackson (drums) Tracks: Intro (Polkadots) / The Maze / It Don’t Mean a Thing / When You Wish Upon a Star / Autumn Leaves / Misterioso / Ah-leu-cha / Zingaro / Remember / Outro (and Moonbeams) Reviews confirmed in The Observer, Financial Times, Jazzwise, Jazz Journal + The Jazz Rag

Sean Jones Im.pro.vise: Never Before Seen

MAC1080 673203108028 CD MACK AVENUE £8.49 JAZZ Celebrating his 10th anniversary with Mack Avenue Records, internationally acclaimed composer/trumpeter Sean Jones decided to pare his artistic viewpoint down to the basics for his seventh album. It’s his first quartet recording with his longtime bandmates, the dynamic pianist Orrin Evans, and the seamless bass/drum tandem of Luques Curtis and Obed Calvaire. “All of my previous albums were ‘productions’ with overdubs, etc,” says Jones. “This time it was just the four of us in one room, no barriers between us, playing live.” The sense of immediacy and urgency that has always been a key element of the jazz art at its highest level is front and centre throughout this entire album. Another essential tradition of looking back to look forward is also omnipresent here, and that includes the full scope of that legacy from its blues roots to its freer explorations. Personnel: Sean Jones (trumpet), Orrin Evans (piano), Luques Curtis (bass), Obed Calvaire (drums) Tracks: 60th & Broadway / Dark Times / Interior Motive / The Morning After / I Don't Give A Damn Blues / Dr. Jekyll / How High The Moon / We'll Meet Under The Stars / New Journey / Don't Fall Off The L.E.J. / Not While I'm Around

Per Monsieur Pisendel 2 - Vivaldi, Albinoni, Pisendel & Montanari

AV2308 822252230826 CD AVIE £8.49 CLASSICAL With ‘Per Monsier Pisendel 2’, Adrian Chandler and La Serenissima hark back to their debut album, performing violin sonatas by Vivaldi, Albinoni, Pisendel and Montanari with stunning virtuosity.

Adrian Chandler returns to where it all began. Per Monsieur Pisendel (AV0018) was the debut album by the Vivaldi enthusiast released on AVIE in 2003, launching a recording career that has earned international plaudits, awards, chart-topping albums and recognition as one of the world’s leading authorities on the music of Vivaldi and his Italian baroque contemporaries. Per Monsieur Pisendel 2 brings together works by the dazzling German violinist’s teachers Antonio Montanari and the Red Priest, the last “Pisendel” sonata by Albinoni, and two sonatas by the Saxon himself, including the fiendish unaccompanied sonata which inspired Bach to compose his six similarly-scored works. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 21/7/2014

Ton Koopman & Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra

Buxtehude: Opera Omnia XIX - Vocal Works Volume 9

CC72258 608917225822 CD CHALLENGE CLASSICS £8.49 CLASSICAL This is the 19th and penultimate volume in a highly acclaimed survey of the complete works of Dieterich Buxtehude by the renowned early music director Ton Koopman and the musicians and singers of Amsterdam Baroque. It is the ninth release devoted to the composer’s vocal works, and features compositions which are not linked to the liturgical service and are consequently extremely free and innovative in form and content. The annual series of “Abendmusiken” were evening concerts that followed the afternoon vespers service. They were presented at St. Mary’s Church in Lübeck on the five Sundays after St. Martin’s Day (November 11). The programmes of the Abendmusiken were not restricted to any liturgical requirements and could add a new dimension to the spiritual function of sacred music. Consequently Buxtehude chose a selection of arias, concertos, and cantatas with texts taken from a variety of origins including biblical texts, mediaeval lyrics, church hymns, and modern poetry in both German and Latin languages. Of particular prominence are devotional and mystic poetic texts that relate to the Pietist movement of the later 17th century. Ton Koopman is one of the world’s foremost early music specialists and directors. His recording of the complete Bach Cantatas on Challenge Classics received worldwide acclaim. In recent years he has undertaken the daunting task of recording all of the music of his compatriot, the early baroque composer Dieterich Buxtehude. As president of the International Dieterich Buxtehude Society Ton Koopman is considered to be one of the world’s leading authorities on his music. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 21/7/2014

Netherlands Symphony Orchestra & Jan Willem de Vriend

Mendelssohn: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3

CC72641 608917264128 Hybrid SACD CHALLENGE CLASSICS £9.99 CLASSICAL This is the second volume in a series of SACD releases by Jan Willem de Vriend and the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra of the complete symphonies of Felix Mendelssohn. Volume 1 (CC72543) was released in January 2013 and featured the Symphony No. 2 ‘Lobgesang’, whilst this disc couples his first mature work in the genre, the opus 11 Symphony No. 1 in C minor, with one of his acknowledged masterpieces, the Symphony No. 3 in A minor known as the ‘Scottish’. Mendelssohn’s mature symphonies are numbered approximately in the order that they were published rather than the order in which they were composed, the order of actual composition being 1, 5, 4, 2, 3. The Symphony No. 1 in C minor was written in 1824, when Mendelssohn was aged 15. The composer conducted the work on his first visit to London in 1829 with the orchestra of the Royal Philharmonic Society. The ‘Scottish’ Symphony, No. 3 in A minor, was written and revised intermittently between 1829 (when Mendelssohn noted down the opening theme during a visit to Holyrood Palace) and 1842, when it was given its premiere in Leipzig. Jan Willem de Vriend has been the chief conductor and artistic director of The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra since 2006. Over the last eight years this musical collaboration has developed a formidable reputation on the Dutch and International music scene. It has become particularly notable for its use of period instruments in the brass section, and has consequently developed its own distinctive sound as regards the 18th and 19th century repertoire. Jan Willem de Vriend has also been a guest conductor with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, The Hague Philharmonic, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Personnel: Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, Jan Willem de Vriend (conductor) Tracks: Symphony No. 1 in C minor, opus 11 1. Allegro di molto 2. Aandante 3. Menuetto: allegro molto 4. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 21/7/2014

Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi & John Axelrod

Brahms Beloved – Brahms: Symphonies 1 & 3 / Clara Schumann: Lieder

TEL3465902 888072346598 CD2 TELARC £8.49 CLASSICAL John Axelrod returns to the podium and the piano to complete his much-admired cycle of Brahms symphonies and Clara Schumann songs – joined for this volume by celebrated soprano Dame Felicity Lott and distinguished Lieder specialist Wolfgang Holzmair. This is the second and final volume of Brahms Beloved, in which conductor John Axelrod pairs the Brahms Symphonies (in this set, the First and the Third) with songs by his muse, Clara Schumann. Volume 1 stimulated healthy debate among Brahmsians as to how deeply enmeshed the presence of Clara is in the songs of the man who always had a love for her, and this volume takes the discussion further with an insightful booklet essay by Jan Swafford, author of a standard-reference Brahms biography. Keeping with the idea of using different voice-types for each ‘set’ of Clara’s songs, the better to explore the notion of different sides of their composer’s character, this volume introduces the two final “Claras,” the great Lieder singers Dame Felicity Lott and Wolfgang Holzmair (for the more masculine side of Clara). The orchestra is again the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, of which John Axelrod is Principal Conductor, and Axelrod once more does double duty as conductor and pianist.

John Axelrod is Principal Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, as well as Music Director of the Orchestre National des Pays et des Loire. A former pupil of Leonard Bernstein, he is one of today’s most in-demand conductors. Recent recordings have included a much-praised Berlioz and Ravel disc with Veronique Gens and the ONPL for Ondine Classics, the album American Serenade also with the ONPL and violinist Rachel Kolly d’Alba for Warner Classics, and Gorecki’s Third Symphony with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra for Sony Classical.
