Jaydee Drive Liner
The Jaydee Drive liner is a self-propelled riding line marker. The3 5-gallon paint tank carries enough marking material for acomplete game field, or several practice fields. The 2-gallon flushtank cleans the discharge lines for work breaks, travel, orovernight. The center or side-mark spray shields are alwaysoperator-visible. A nearly zero turning radius reduces or elimi-nates back and turn maneuvers.

Have questions'? Send them to Dave at: ISU, Hort. Dept., Ames, IA 50011.
by Dr. Dave Minner
Many East Coast sports field man-agers have been expressing the samedrought-related concerns lately: "Wehave experienced severe lack of rainthis summer, and now we are underwater restrictions. Some restrictionscall for no watering of our soccerand football fields. The fields havebecome so hard that we have had tocancel games. What can we do, andwhat should we expect in terms ofgrass recovery if it ever rains again?"
First, remember that rain canbe very local. One town mayreceive no rain, while another
town only 50 miles away may haveseveral brief showers to keep thegrass growing nicely.
On the other hand, certain partsof the country can experience moreprolonged periods of dry weatherthat can lead to drought and waterrestrictions. It's difficult to predictwhich summers will be excessivelydry, so in most cases it's warrantedto treat each summer as if it's goingto be a drought.
Here are a few tips to keep grassalive during dry summers:
• Mow as tall as possible to shadethe ground and promote deep root-ing. Mow cool-season grasses, likeKentucky blue, perennial rye, andtall fescue, at 2.5 to 3.5 inches.
Warm-season grasses, likebermuda, tolerate dry conditionsquite well. Mowing at 2.0 inches willhelp them during extended dryperiods.
• Water deeply and infrequentlyduring the spring and prior to dryconditions. This will allow yourgrass to harden off and survivewithout lush conditions.
You must allow some wilting tooccur between these deep, infre-quent waterings. Slight wilting
ensures aeration of the soil, increased rooting, and a physiologi-cal hardening of the plant to mois-ture stress.
Signs that a field is beginning towilt include: lingering footprints, rolled or folded leaves, and a pur-ple/blue cast to the field. Whenthese signs begin to become evident, wet the soil to a depth of about sixto eight inches. Watch the grassrecover, and don't water until thefield has begun to wilt again.
"How will my fields recover fromthis type of severe drought?"
• Bermudagrass fields toleratedrought better than any of the cool-season grasses. They recover fasteronce water is returned to the field.
• Perennial ryegrasses receivethe most damage when fields areleft to go brown or summer dormantwithout irrigation. Many fields thatcontain a high percentage of peren-nial ryegrass from continuous over-seeding will likely experience sub-stantial turf loss.
• Kentucky bluegrass recoversfrom summer dormancy in mostcases. However, when the ground isso dry that it begins to crack open, expect some loss of Kentucky blue-grass.
• Tall fescue is the most drought-tolerant grass because of its deeproot system. However, it can becomequite clumpy as it recovers fromsevere drought.
Be prepared to interseed grassback into the field as soon as ade-quate moisture is available. Coringand drill seeding will help get thegrass started again.
Seed before, during, and after thefall season. Seed is fairly inexpen-sive, so I suggest you continue to
seed during the fall playing seasonto ensure as much coverage as pos-sible for next year.
'7s there anything we can do tomake our hard, dry fields moreplayable during the drought?"
This is a tough question. FloydPerry once reminded me that if allyou have to play on is a worn-outfield with compacted soil, then youneed to make the best dirt possible. The best way to accomplish this isto loosen the soil through aerifica-tion.
Your goal is not to get air to theroots, it's to make the field softer.Use whatever aerification equip-ment you have if it will go into thehard ground.
Shatter-core aerifiers do the bestjob of loosening fields that havebeen hardened by dry conditions.Their tines penetrate the groundand use shaking action to fractureand loosen the surface.
This type of equipment alsoworks well on hard, dry skin areasof baseball and softball fields. Youcan loosen the field and play on itthe same day.
Summer aerification is not typi-cally recommend for general turf. But if you're desperate to make thefield softer and safer, it may be youronly solution. &,
