What is label compliance?

Literally, it means meeting or complying with the labeling guidelines set down by a customer. The customer, whether it is a retail firm, shipper, or manufacturer, has created its own labeling specifications to fulfill its transportation and logistical needs. It is up to the supplier to meet those guidelines. Failure to do so could result in return of product, fees, or contract termination.

Organizations like the UCC (Uniform Code Council), the AIAG (Automotive Industry Action Group) and HIBCC (Health Industry Business Communications Council) have developed specific industry labeling standards. Their guidelines minimize problems between trading partners by creating a basic structure all suppliers and customers can agree upon. The guidelines are implemented on a volunteer basis.

In practice, the benefits of compliance labeling are fairly obvious for the customer. A bar code labeling standard helps monitor inventory,

assists replenishment, minimizes distribution time, and allows for product traceability. The supplier's initial time and expense appears to be justified only in maintaining a business relationship with a customer requiring label compliance. But, over time, the increased accuracy, improved order picking, and streamlined inventory will be solid evidence that a bar code labeling system benefits both sides. The bottom line is to get the right product to the right place in the shortest time.

Compliance Templates

Barcode400 makes it easy to meet the compliance requirements of most companies. T.L. Ashford maintains a library of compliance templates. When a new compliance label is required, our support staff will create and test a label template to fulfill the requirements. These templates are available to all Barcode400 customers under our maintenance agreement.

Compliance Labeling

Here are some examples of compliance templates

2-Dimensional bar codes supported - (Maxicode, PDF417, MicroPDF, Datamatrix, QRCODE)

Feature

Now you can easily comply with your customers EPC / RFID requirements using the Barcode400 RFID option. Label design is a snap using the compli-ance templates available from T.L. Ashford. The Barcode400 RFID Option will print and encode RFID “Smart Labels” with data directly from your System i.

“Smart Label” templates are available for such companies as Wal-Mart, Target Stores, Department of Defense and others.

Benefits

With the Barcode400 RFID Option you can easily comply with a variety of RFID standards. There is no need to use your valuable programming resources.

Merging* Your DataStep 1... Retrieve a data definition into Barcode400

Designing your label using text, bar codes, graphics, boxes, lines, paragraphs and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is made easy with the click of a button.

The example below shows just how easy it is to add a text item to your label, simply click on the text icon and add your data using the text field properties dialog box.

Step 2... Design your label format

Barcode400 can use variable data from the following sources:

Merge Data - data that comes from a Physical File, Logical File or Data Structure.

Prompted Data - information entered by a user at print time.

System Data/Time - information retrieved from the System i at print time.

*Barcode400 defines Merge Data, as data that comes from a Physical File, Logical File or Data Structure. With Barcode400, records can be selected from a file and printed to a label without any programming. In batch mode, each record in a file can be automatically read and printed. Printing from a file using the built-in functions of Barcode400 does not require programming.

For the advanced user, printing labels from within your program requires a Data Structure. You simply define a data structure inside your program that matches the Data Definition used when you designed your label. After populating the fields of the data structure, simply call to Barcode400 and pass the data structure as a parameter. (See page 11)

While the T.L. Ashford Software is easy enough to be used by anyone, the more technically inclined will appreciate the advanced functionality offered by this package. Below are two features that add flexibility and unlimited possibilities for application development.

Calling from within an existing program.

Running in Batch Mode

Printing without operator intervention. Automate label printing by placing a single CL statement into your job.

Example of CL program

The data structure should match the DDS used when designing the label.(See page 8)

As your program processes, populate "Mrgdta" fields and then call Barcode400.

To add data base fields to your label, simply click on the Merge button and select the data definition field that contains your data.

Step 3... Using Merged Data

Once the label is complete it is now ready to print using data directly from the System i. You can print using a Barcode400 menu option, CL program or from within an existing RPG application.See examples under advanced functions on page 11.
