I am a mature aged Chinese student. I have been in Thargomindah State School for more than half a year. When I first began to go school I almost couldn't understand the con-tent of the teacher, but after almost a se-mester of learning and the teacher and class-mates help, my English has made great pro-gress. In addition to English I go to school to study and understand a lot of interesting things in an Australian school. I think the study in Australia will enable chil-dren to learn knowledge in interesting things. Every day the teacher tells some stories to the children to improve the children's read-ing ability by telling stories. When I was learning math, I was surprised that kids could often learn it by dancing or playing some games, which I had never experienced be-fore. I think this way can make children feel that learning is not too stressful. In addition, I feel that teachers do not use the same standard to measure students from when I attended school in China. When I was young, there were always very strict exams and rigorous answers. But I find that when children write exercises, their answers are varied, and the teacher will take their an-swers as correct if they are reasonable. To my surprise, many of the questions required to be answered in the form of drawing, which I think is of great help to improve children's imagination. When I was young, the school would teach us profound math and other subjects, but the school here would have more interesting sub-jects, such as art classes for a long time, lan-guage learning, and even cooking, which is not what I expected, and it also let me know a lot about the food of other countries. In school, I not only learned English, but also learned a lot about the local culture of Aus-tralia. I learned that there is another name for the Red and Green Team. I also learned a lot of local Australian animals and idioms of local languages from the stories told by the teacher. I also knew a lot of Australian chil-dren's songs when I was with the children. Many of them are things that I have no way to touch before. I very exciting and happy to study in school with children.

HIGH SCHOOL

We are almost there team! With only two weeks left of school, we are very much on the last leg of the term, and it will take some endur-ance to reach the finish line.

I would like to give a big welcome to our two newest students at the Thargomindah Secondary Learning Facility: Clinton Matthews (Yr 9) and Toby Matthews (Yr 7). It is just great to see this centre continue to grow, as it shows how valuable this service is to the community.

Parents, please keep an eye out next week for a letter regarding Term 3’s Rockhampton camp. Once more details have been released on the exact timing of the camp, we will look to sorting out available travel needs.

With only two weeks left of the term, it is important for parents to continue supporting students well-being in these stressful times. A hearty breakfast, well packed lunch-es and maybe a chore or two less can really go a long way in ensuring students are able to focus on achieving their best results!

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR

Excellence in Education, for Everyone, Every Day

Welcome week 8! We have been work-ing like busy bees this last fortnight in preparation for our assessment and end of term activities. I am happy to say, we have made it to the finish line and the students in the P-3 class have made great progress in getting the assessments done and dusted for the term! We should have all our assess-ments finished for this term early in week 9, meaning I can write reports and the students will move forward into learning for next term, with a focus around the solar system and informative writing.

Our whole school was lucky enough to have our Town Mayor, Tractor Fergu-son come in and teach us all about bees! Thank you to Mrs L for leading up the learning on bees, their habi-tats, their predators and how they create honey, and thank you to Miss Peggy from roping Tractor into the job. The kids sure did love listening and asking questions from the town bee keeper!

Aside from assessment and learning about bees, the students in the P-3 class have had the privilege of col-lecting and learning how to use their very own laptop. This has been an ex-tremely exciting endeavour and the students are getting more and more computer literate as the days go by. Don’t be surprised if your child comes home acting like a little computer whiz, because that’s what they are training to be here at school!

We have started to warm up our ath-letics bodies this last fortnight and hung up our fitness obstacle course shoes after create two monster ob-stacle course that even got the tick of approval by Miss Peggy and Mrs L. After the students built, and quality assured them, of course!

What a great two weeks here in the K-3 class, see you next time for our last newsletter for Term Two!

K-3 CLASS

STUDENT BLOG This week we got to learn all about the amaz-ing work that our bees do, from our very own Tractor Ferguson! It was really nice of Trac-tor to come to our school and teach us the importance of bees to the environment, but we also got to taste some delicious honey as well. Yummy!

We have made it to Week 8. I am sure I speak for everyone when I say “Holy wow, where has the term gone?” This fortnight we have been working very studiously to the learn-ing necessary to complete assessment as well as beginning to check those pesky assessment off our list. I would like to acknowledge how the Year 3-6s have dealt with looming deadlines and assessment stress up until this point. They have been incredibly posi-tive and most of us have hit the ground running and just gotten stuck in to completing assessment with very little angst.

Assessment time is never easy or fun, but as we get closer to the end of the term, I hope that everyone can understand that their hard work does in fact pay off and reflect in their grades at the end of this term’s re-port cards.

In Science, students have been con-sidering how they can adapt a bee and a worm to live in a new environment – there have been some hilarious modi-fications made to these animals to survive in a new place. As long as stu-dents can justify their choices of ad-aptations, the sky is the limit. Imag-ine ‘super bees’ that have a camels hump and ‘winged worms’ that can fly to safety from floodwaters to name a few.

As we get closer to the end of the term, I would also like to remind eve-ryone to maintain that positive atti-tude and ensure you are getting enough sleep and are eating enough food. Doing these things will help your body deal with the stress of as-sessment and keep you warm in the cold weather we have been having.
