THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH!

After enjoying a wonderful show last Tuesday we would like to thank all those who took part in the production: Thank you to all the staff members who helped with the production, organising the students and working back stage. A big thank you to all the students who took part, not only as actors, but as singers, musicians, artists, tech crew and those working back stage to make the performance what it was! CLASSES FOR NEXT YEAR

On Wednesday 18th

December, all students from Foundation to Year 5 will visit their new teachers for 2015. This event can sometimes be a little foreboding and the following advice is offered:

The children only care about friends. They are extremely nervous and insecure about the change. They do not usually want to leave their teacher and may jump into your car and declare in floods of tears that they have no friends in the new class, or that the new teacher is terrifying. Every child has had a friendship list and teachers have worked very hard to ensure that everyone has a friend. Please help your child to find friends and reassure him or her about the teacher.

Parents come in three broad categories. The first and overwhelmingly largest group help their children to adjust to the change, get to know the other children in the grades and encourage them to think logically about the challenges of the next year. The second group care specifically about getting the perceived best teacher. When they speak to me, they indicate that friends are not important, the class size is of no consequence and that their child must be in a certain class. This is not a good practice, because every child needs a variety of teachers – young, old, male, female, culturally diverse. The third group want their children not to suffer any disappointment. The children in these families are aware of their parents’ influence and try to get them to organise the classes to fit around their friendship groups. This sounds okay, except that the teachers work really hard at separating students who interfere with the learning of others. The teachers have worked tirelessly to achieve balanced academic classes, to take into account friendship lists, and to ensure that students with special needs are placed in supportive environments both physically and educationally. They have had long discussions with each other to get their loved 2014 students into the 2015 classes that they perceive are best for each child. The Principal has reviewed all the lists, reviewed all the notes about educational issues, reviewed letters from previous years about student incompatibility, chatted to parents, endeavoured to move any “at risk” children into positions which might positively change their lives. So – it is a very big task to please everyone and mostly we do a brilliant job. However, in keeping with the ‘team’ atmosphere we like to encourage here (parents and teacher working together for the students); we are happy to listen to any concerns you might have.

MUSIC AT EASTWOOD

Battle of the Bands Last weekend some of our students took part in the Battle of the Bands presented by WONNIES SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND PERFORMING ARTS. Schools from the Eastern suburbs, including ours, competed in various musical performances. The following students represented our school in the band section: Sam Coniglio (voclas), Roderick Norman (drums), Nick Pedritti (guitar), Will Suidgeest (guitar), Ruby Harrison (keyboard), Oliver Dark (Bass guitar), Matthew Schmidli (keyboard). Their talented performance earned them 5th place as a band and Sam shone in the vocals winning third place! Well done boys; we are certainly very proud of all of you.

EASTWOOD SUMMER CONCERT

Last Wednesday evening we held the second Eastwood Summer Concert at which the audience was treated to a talented performance by our students on many different musical instruments. What a many talented group this was! Students who had been learning for multiple years played alongside those that had just begun lessons. They all performed beautifully, showing lots of confidence and pride in their achievements. The following students took part, and I would like to congratulate them on a great performance:

Matthew Schmidli, Lucy Kenworthy, Abby Curtin, Xavier Edward, Archie Bailey, Will Storey, Cooper McNamara, Frank Eekhof, Alina Zhang, Sarah Sheehy, John Zhou, Kynan Curtain, Cody Kefford, Jarvis Clark, Will

Suidgeest, Isabel Kenworthy, Sharelle Norman, Ruby Harrison, Roderick Norman, Jack Aston, Charlie Aston, Pipo Chen, Oliver Dark, Chelsea Jeffery, Amelia Suidgeest, Sam Coniglio. Thank you to Mihoko Sato and Nathan McKinnon from Wonnies who have taught our students this year. Eastwood Primary School looks forward to extending this program next year and working together with Wonnies to develop a successful Performing Arts program in 2015.

Waving a farewell from Fiona

Thank you for the privilege to have taught and worked with and you all this year! It’s wonderful to see many of you signing and wanting to communicate in Auslan! I will miss you all next year, I’m going to be involved with additional studies. However, I will be involved in Auslan classes and activities in the local community. If you want private tutoring, help with Auslan or have any questions, you are welcome to contact me at these details below: Fiona Crisp email: [email protected] or sms: 0414435976 Auslan is a great way to break communication barriers. I encourage you to continue to use this beautiful language…maybe even see me around in the Deaf community someday!

Children need to move for an hour or more a day What can help children make friends, increase confidence and self-esteem, improves academic performance, improve fitness, coordination and muscle strength, build strong bones and even provide a longer healthier life? If it came in a bottle everyone would buy it, but the good news is it’s free for everyone. It’s physical activity, of course. It gives students so much ‘Brain Power’ that studies have even shown that increasing physical activity during school time can

increase student outcomes! Physical and sport education is an important part of the school curriculum and schools are required to meet time requirements each week. However, it’s important for families to know that children need more physical activity than what they receive at school each day. Australia’s physical activity recommendations for 5- 12 years olds states that children need “at least one hour (and up to several hours) of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.

Healthy Snack Ideas for the Summer Holidays!

Omelettes with grated vegetables and low-fat cheese make a great lunch, they’re high in protein, vitamins and minerals

Baked beans are a fantastic quick and easy snack, high in pro-

tein, they can be served with wholemeal rolls or combined with leftover meat, hard-boiled egg or crunchy vegetables

Adding fruits such as pineapple and apricots to salads and

coleslaws is great to add flavour and encourage kids to eat them

Frozen blueberries and strawberries are great to add to low-fat

ice cream, yoghurts and in shakes. They could be an alterna-tive to sugary syrup toppings.
