PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Next week, Week 8 brings with it timely advocacy regarding the purpose and intent of Harmony Day and National Day of Action, Take Action Together!

‘Harmony Day is celebrated annually in March in Australia. It began in 1999, coinciding with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The day was introduced to re-centralise a singular and unifying notion of Australian-ness within multicultural policy.’ The definition of harmony includes the quality forming of a pleasing and consistent whole; the statement of being in agreement or concord; and the combination of simultaneously sounded musical notes to produce a pleasing effect. When we think of harmony, it is about looking after each other, using mindful and thoughtful language when communicating, not sitting in judgement of others and being astute of our own behaviours, building positive relationships and thinking of the betterment of the community and not our personal needs, desires or power.

The interconnectedness of thinking and language use, language use and thinking has led to sharing the following from Bullying. No Way! Website. And, may shed further light on our school’s position regarding the teaching of the social and learning behaviours (for all our students) is to become intelligent citizens – democratic, creative, healthy, informed and eco through the Habits of Mind.

‘The national definition of bullying for schools states bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one of more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening. Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (eg through sharing of digital records). Single incidents and conflict of fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

Using the terms ‘bully’ and ‘victim’ to label students is not recommended in schools. Instead, clearly identifying and labeling the inappropriate behaviour is more constructive, achieving positive and lasting solutions for everyone involved. Although these terms are often used in research and the media, they can cause additional problems. These labels can imply that bullying is due to unchangeable things about the persons involved. In reality, people can change the way they behave. Unfortunately, labels can ‘stick’ and make it harder to change. Using such labels involves making a judgement about a person’s character (both those who are bullying others and those who are targeted) rather than their behaviour.

Behaviours that do not constitute bullying include –

mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance)

not liking someone or a single act of social rejection

one off acts of meanness or spite

isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence.

However, these conflicts still need to be and are addressed and resolved.

The meaningful involvement of parents, carers and other family members is essential in developing and maintaining safe and supportive learning environments. This means that at Our Beautiful Place we are collectively -

Building positive teacher parent and family relationships through regular form and informal activities – keep an eye out on the school’s Webpage, Qschools, newsletters for these opportunities; get amongst Loving Literature; join in at the Years 3 – 6 Cross Country, Under 8’s Week and book in for the exciting three way interview process to share your child’s learning, progression, efforts and achievements

Respecting the diversity of the school community and implementing proactive strategies in order to build a cohesive and culturally safe school – reference to the articles by Ezra Mabo and Sonya Wilson as examplars

Fostering and maintaining positive, caring and respectful student-peer, student-teacher, teacher-parent and teacher-teacher relations – through the explicit teaching and valuing of the Habits of Minds as the framework to grow and pracitse the skills for relationship building irrespective of position, and the understanding of the School Matrix of Acceptable Behaviours – available on our website

3

Seeking involvement of school staff, students and families in the promotion and recognition of positive behaviour – Believe, Achieve, and Succeed through taking on positive roles in our learning community, in light of our purpose, vision, practices, processes and procedures

Implementing a whole school systemic approach to wellbeing and positive behaviour with tiers of support to meet the diverse needs of staff, students and families – the school has been undertaking a review on the school’s Reponsible Behaviour Plan for Students and will continue this process with the launching of new department policy documents responsive to the 2020 Human Rights Act; also timely to express gratitude to the school’s Student Support and Date Group help meets every Wednesday morning prior to school in their tier support area

Join us at our monthly P&C meetings where your input (feedback and feedforward) is sought, make appointments with Executive Leaders and come along to next week’s Yarning Circle with Karen Boyes on Tuesday 17 March at 1:30pm.

And this fortnights’ Habit of mind is Listening with Understanding and Empathy. How apt! ‘It takes an entire village to raise a child.’ Glenyce Hadfield Principal

HABIT OF MIND - Listening with Understanding and Empathy, this is about understanding others and devoting

mental energy to another person’s thoughts and ideas. It is about making an effort to perceive another’s point of view and emotions. Listening with Understanding and Empathy is one the habits that is part of the student self assessment checklist and assists Year level teams to teach, monitor and assess the social and learning behaviours for all students specific for Prep to Year 6 -

I listen carefully to others’ ideas and respect their points of view

I initiate conversation and respond courteously

I build on others’ ideas

I am attentive (aware of others’ emotional state in oral or body language) and think before speaking

I realise the time and place for humour and laughter

LOVING LITERATURE With this Habit, we learn that listening involves not only being quiet but also making an effort to understand what the other person is saying. The online book to bring this Habit to life is “Quiet Please, Owen McPhee!” This book is read by the Social Sprouts group, which means that the reader stops constantly to ask questions. This opportunity to answer questions together can really add to the fun of this Loving Literature experience. Enjoy!

Year 6 Students Matthew, Manu and Lily outlining the Habit of Mind – Persisting, on a recent assembly

‘During our performance we demonstrated how we sounded when we didn’t practice, then practising together making mistakes. But instead of asking us directly what was wrong, the narrator inquired about our emotions in our heads – three of our four attempts were experiencing failure and we all responded differently – irritated, frustrated and annoyed. Then our fourth go we worked together

persisted, ignoring and blocking out our negative emotions to be successful, and we were! Matthew 6BS A School Priority session in action with a paraprofessional - Guided reading building the skills for learning to read (eg decoding) and reading to learn (thinking skills for comprehension) and practising the dispositions of Persisting, Listening and Striving for Accuracy. LIBRARY BUZZ Firstly, thank you Caden in Year 2, who bolted into the library this week to share a ‘Freaky Fact’ with library staff. ‘We all know babies suck their thumbs,’ he said, but apparently, baby elephants like to suck their trunks! This latest book in our collection is extremely popular and some of our students shared some riveting and simply astonishing facts. Here are some to ponder this week:

It is impossible to hum while holding your nose. Go ahead and try it!

That apple you buy at the supermarket could be over a year old!

All swans in England belong to the Queen.

No piece of square paper can be folded more than 7 times in half. Give that one a go! Recycling one glass jar saves enough energy to operate a television for three hours.

It is physically impossible for you to lick your elbow. Go ahead and try this one!

One for our older readers: Sean Connery wore a toupee in all his James Bond movies.

M&M’s actually stands for “Mars & Murrie’s,” the last names of the candy’s founders.

ON THE SHELF… The Library Team are always busy preparing new books for display on the orange bookshelf, situated on the right as you enter the library. All new books have a distinctive star adhered to their front covers. Check out these titles…

Finally, with St Patrick’s looming next week, I have set students a challenge to locate all the lucky four leaf clovers scattered throughout the newsletter. Put your skimming and scanning skills to work and then come to

the library with the correct number of clovers found and let us know! Mrs Sutton

3 WAY (STUDENT + FAMILY + TEACHER) INTERVIEWS Each term, families are given an opportunity to receive specific information regarding student progress and achievement. In Terms Two and Four, this takes the form of a Semester report card. In Terms One and Three, this occurs via face to face interviews. At Wynnum State School, we value and encourage student voice through 3 Way Interviews where students, teachers and parents/caregivers conference and share learning celebrations and challenges together.

This is great opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher, and experience the Wonderment and Awe of what your child is learning, through his/her own voice. You can ask about goal setting in reading, number and social and learning behaviours. The celebrations and challenges will include –

‘the work I am struggling and persevering with’

‘the work I am learning to do’

work I can do with ease’ 3 Way Interviews for Preps to Year 3 will take place over the last two weeks of this term. 3 Way Interviews for Years 4-6 will take place over the first two weeks of Term Two (this takes into account the Years 4, 5 and 6 exciting school camp programs over the last two weeks of this term). All bookings become open this Wednesday afternoon. Use SOBS, our online booking system, to book in for a 20 minute interview for each Wynnum Warrior in the family. All bookings are made online via the same link https://eq.sobs.com.au/pt3/parent.php?schoolid=70389. If you do not have internet access at home or if you have any problems using the system, please drop

in to the Library and a staff member will happily assist you to make a booking. Every student is the centre of this process, and we look forward to every student bringing parents to his/her place of learning

(working).

YEAR 6 NEWS Think U Know – Sargent Sharyn McAnualty - Last Friday, Year 6 students were fortunate to have Sargent Sharyn McAnualty come to talk to us about cyber safety. She taught us about having safe, strong passwords for online accounts, being safe online, reporting cyber bullying and to not share personal photos of yourself or others. This will help us to stay safe online when interacting with other people. On behalf of Year 6, we would like to say a big thanks to Sargent Sharyn for giving us knowledge on how to stay cyber safe. She is a wonderful role model for our Year 6 Giving Culture. Zanthia and Alyr

SCIENCE NEWS There have been so many fantastic predictions, extended discussions and exploration of new vocabulary these past two weeks in the Science Lab for all P-3 classes!

Did you know the Preps are investigating materials and their properties? Each Prep class have now made their own class ‘What’s It Made of? Book’ to have in their class reading corner so they can revisit, and read, all about their chosen material! There are lots of great describing words, and writing attempts, from each of the Preps on their own page in their class book. Happy Reading Preps!

Year Two’s thoroughly stepped up to their Science challenge to make a ‘Spaghetti and Marshmallow Towers’ (not as easy as it sounds! Emotions were experienced and resilience was certainly called for!). Even if our partner-made tower did not eventually stand up we learnt that persistence is so important for success! Working interdependently was also very important for our tower to work which made us feel so proud and accomplished!

We also explored emulsions, density and viscosity through our hands on investigations using detergent, water, oil and milk. The students are very keen to wash your dishes now (heehee!) Science is actually happening in your sink

every day!

SPORT NEWS Cross Country - This term our annual Cross Country carnival will be held on campus on Friday 20 March during first session. Years 3 -6 will be involved in the 1km circuit in Year levels, with the option of finishing for a point after a lap of the oval. Students performing well may be invited to attend the District Trial on Thursday 7 May at Capalaba. The distances at Districts will be 2km – 3km. Be sure to keep training!

Schools With Pools - 40 students from across Years 2 to 6 have been selected to represent Wynnum State School at the annual ‘Schools With Pools’ carnival held at Moreton Bay College on Friday 13 March. Students from as young as 8yrs old will be swimming all strokes and a relay against Wondall Heights, Manly West State School, Moreton Bay College and Moreton Bay Boys College. Good luck Wynnum Warriors!

Interschool Sport - During PE lessons students in Years 4 to 6 have discussed and nominated which sporting team they would like to play in Term 2. The sports on offer are Rugby League, Netball, Volleyball and Football (Soccer). Students will meet their coaches after Precinct Assembly on Friday and permission letters will follow. Please return permission notes to Homeroom teachers as soon as possible to confirm teams and numbers.

District Basketball Champions - Congratulations to Alyr and Brianna in making the Bayside District basketball team. They will compete at the Metropolitan East Regional trials later this month. Well done girls and go for gold!

Full Clothed Swim for PE - This term during PE the focus has been on safety and safe procedures for ourselves and others in aquatic environments. As part of our program students in Years 4 to 6 have been asked to bring cotton or water absorbing 'normal' clothes (t-shirt, shorts/pants, and socks) to wear over their swimmers during Week 8 in order to experience the impact clothes make to movement in the water. Students will then explore techniques to safely remove excess water logged clothing and discuss scenarios and reasons this might be applicable. Swim wear must be worn under the task clothing. Please name all items and provide a spare bag in order to reduce lost items during this activity.

Please come to see the

display outside the

Science Lab (just near

Library). The recipe for

‘Magic Milk’ is there if you

want to try it at home and

enjoy amazing learning

while extending your

child’s vocabulary and

knowledge at the same

time! Science is Life!

COMMUNITY GATHERING Yura! On Thursday 5 March 2020, a morning sausage sizzle was held for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and carers at Wynnum State School with 10 families attending, which I believe was a positive turn out. The intention was to inform parents of the K-2 Project Embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, ask how the parents and carers feel the school could support the parents and students while maintaining their cultural safety and identity whilst positively engaging in their learning journey. Community organisation’s such as Yulu- Burri-Ba, Deadly Choices and BABI Youth and Family Service attended and was well received by the parents and school Leadership. Moving forward, a parent consultation committee will hopefully be re-established to continue the conversation and support for families on how best to embed the above mentioned perspectives. School Leadership has approved to have a Native Bush Tucker garden on school grounds and will commence the building in Term 3, post K-2 Project. This garden will hopefully have signage identifying the Quandamooka seasons, Quandamooka name, scientific name and common name. Deadly Choices have also been welcomed into the school once again to facilitate Traditional Games during breaks twice a week. With much more work to do, I strongly feel that once the K-2 Project has ceased, Wynnum State School and the community will come together to continue to consider ways on how to embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. Ezra Mabo

HEALTH CHECKS FOR ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER STUDENTS National Close the Gap Day is scheduled for March 19, when Community health groups, educators, medical professionals, and policy makers organise outreach drives, conferences, and workshops to bring attention to the problem of low life expectancy among indigenous groups. Yulu-BurriBa is again this year supporting our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students by organising health checks for students at Wynnum State School. Parent consent forms have been sent home with students and should be returned by Friday 20 March.

CELEBRATING CULTURE It was an exciting privilege to be present at the Bayside Multicultural Centre on Sunday 8 March to witness the Welcome Ceremony for new students joining the Kapa Haka Group which includes past Wynnum State School students. The group teaches Mori students traditional dance, song and customs. How fitting with Harmony Day scheduled for March 21 that the group acknowledged traditional custodians and Uncle Johnny Huggin a traditional Bigera Man from Carnarvon Gorge shared a poem he had written.
