Issue 10 - 27 October 2017 Hello Neerigen Brook Families and Community Members Welcome back to a busy Term 4. MS Readathon – Top public school in WA!! Our children have continued this year to show their love of reading and their support for others in the community through the MS Readathon. Through the leadership of our amazing Library Officer, Mrs Fearns, our children have raised $1,822.00 This means that we are in the top 20 fundraisers Australia-wide and the highest public-school fundraiser in WA!! This is a fantastic achievement that everyone in our community should be very proud of. Congratulations to everyone involved for supporting our children to love reading. Attendance Regular attendance is vital for children to experience connection, belonging and success at school. Currently we have a number of children having 1, 2, 3 and even 4 days away from school a fortnight which places them at academic risk. The reasons most often given for these absences are sleeping in, looking after younger children or in-term holidays. Unless children are sick or are infectious parents/guardians must send their children to school. If you are having any difficulties with getting your children to school please come and have a chat with their teacher or the Deputy Principals so that we can work together to develop regular attendance habits. Kindy Induction I’m really looking forward to meeting our 2018 Kindy children on Wednesday 22 November at 11:15am for their Induction. If you have a child who is turning four before 30 June next year and you haven’t yet enrolled them in Kindy please come to the office as soon as possible as our places are filling up quickly. Enrolments for 2018 To help us with our planning for next year we’d really appreciate families letting us know if they will be leaving or enrolling more children in our school for 2018. If you’re not sure about your plans for 2018 and you would like to have a chat, please pop into the office. Board open meeting A great way of learning more about our school and the role of the Board is be to come along to public Board meeting on Monday 4 December at 3pm. All parents and family members are welcome to attend. Please let the office know if you are planning on coming along to the meeting Principal’s Pen

Permanent staff Congratulations to Mrs Deb Hill and Mrs Heidi McClure for achieving permanency at our school. We’re thrilled that such excellent teachers will be staying with us at Neerigen Brook PS.

Brilliant Kids Morning Tea On Wednesday20 September we held our Brilliant Kids Morning Tea for Term Three. The students enjoyed a wonderful feast of delicious morning tea treats whilst they shared with Mrs Instance and Mrs Barrett what they enjoyed most about our school and how we could make NBPS even better. Some of the things our students have enjoyed this term included warm ups, lots of learning, Mathletics and the range of incursions this year including the Police Pipe Band, World of Maths and NAIDOC celebrations. The students also enjoyed Book Week, and they love that we have so many students from different cultures at our school. Our Brilliant Kids suggested that to make our school even better the school should have more incursions, introduce a language, build a nature playground for Year 1 – 6 students and increase the amount of visits for the Year 6 students to the local high schools as part of their transition program. Thank you to our wonderful Brilliant Kids, not only for their feedback but also for being role models by demonstrating consistent positive behaviour throughout the term.

MS Readathon

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year’s MS Readathon. You have made us very proud of your commitment to helping others and by demonstrating your wonderful reading abilities. We have now raised an amazing $1 822. Donations will be accepted until Tuesday 31st October. Certificates and an appreciation gift will be given to all of our fabulous fundraisers at the next assembly on Friday 3rd November. “Brook” Worms Our Neerigen “Brook” Worms are currently reading “I Am Malala – Young Readers Edition”. The students are enjoying reading about her life. She fights with her brothers, reads Twilight novels, watches the same tv shows and has a messy bedroom. Many were surprised that girls were not able to go to school in Pakistan. We are going to explore the concept that one person can make a difference.

Room 6 have started to turn their classroom into an underwater grotto in anticipation of the long summer holidays and maybe some lazy days on the beach. We are learning about some of the amazing creatures we share our oceans with and began our journey by learning about sharks. We wondered how many teeth would fit into our shark’s mouth. We estimated and then counted how many. We were very grateful that we didn’t have to count the teeth in the mouth of a real shark!

As the weather is warming up and the Sun is starting to reach its high UV ratings, we in Room 8 have been learning all about the importance of Sun Safety. We have looked at and discussed what Sun Safety actually is in order to give a proper definition as well as looking at who is more prone to being sun burnt according to our skin colour. We went around as a class and asked everyone in our class who gets sunburnt easily, this allowed us to discuss and identify which skin tones were less likely to get sun burnt and why. We linked this activity into an art activity which we mixed Red, Yellow, Brown and White to create a range of different skin tones, the goal at the end was to make a colour that was as close to our skin as possible. We also used our knowledge of Sun Safety to write a persuasive text: “Should kids have to wear a hat at playtime?” We had some for and against, which all responses and good reasons, examples and arguments. We look forward to continuing our learning of Sun Safety and linking our knowledge to our real life to ensure we are always being safe!

This term will be busy with fundraising. We are holding a Billy G’s Cookie dough fundraiser with notes going home this week and Order forms & money to be brought back by November 7th. Cookie dough should be ready for collection around 24th November. We are looking for donations towards our Christmas raffle. We have already received a bike and some school banking donations!! Any non-perishable items will be accepted even gift baskets/boxes or cellophane. All donations can be dropped to the canteen. Notes will go home soon in regard to the Christmas raffle. On the 10th December we will be holding a sausage sizzle at Spud Shed in Kelmscott. It would be great to see as many smiling faces as possible to help raise funds for our school!!

Samaritans Purse This year Neerigen Brook Primary School staff, students and teachers have taken part in the Samaritans Purse shoebox donation. People pack shoebox gifts each year to bless children in need around the world. Churches and groups collect these boxes the third week of November. Then, thousands of volunteers inspect and prepare the shoeboxes for international shipping. If this is something that interest you or your family and you would love to contribute to a child that is less fortunate, please follow these simple steps…… Include something from each of the six categories: Something to wear Something to play with Something for school Something to love Something for personal hygiene THANKYOU!!
