Green was the theme for our annual celebration of all things Irish. President Grant opened the meeting by inviting Tim Anderson to provide a summary of the upcoming Myanmar delegation’s official itinerary, once again a very busy and worthwhile programme. Richard Lawrence spoke about the second car boot sale which was declared a success despite the inclement weather (see later for more details). Roger Leask then gave an overview of District Conference held in Albury 14-16 March (see later for photos of that event).

This Week’s Meeting:

Lisa Lowcock gave a final pep talk for this weekend’s Relay for Life to be held at the Aberfeldie Athletics Track. Current pledges total $11,000, a magnificent effort by Lisa and her team. Veronica O’Sullivan put together a very entertaining program of Irish stories and video clips. Pat O’Connell, Ian Thomas, Richard Lawrence, and Roger Leask participated in an Irish joke-telling competition with Thommo declared the eventual winner and strolling away with a six pack of Guinness. Several other lucky members shared the remaining cans of ‘liquid gold’. How many Irishmen does it take to screw in a light bulb? 21 – one to hold the light bulb and 20 to drink until the room spins!

Timing is everything in life and with the second Car Boot Sale set for last Sunday morning and with squalling rain and winds stall holders still came out to sell their items. Over 30 stall holders and less than 200 buyers faced the early winter conditions in Niddrie Car Park on Sunday. The tough conditions were cold, wet and windy but everyone involved still enjoyed the occasion. Thanks to the following Rotarians who made the effort to help out and raise more than $1000 of Community Discretionary Funds for the Rotary Club of Essendon: Michael Mahoney, Alistair Fraser, Lino Airo-Farulla, John Odgers, Pat O'Connell, Peter Duras, Denis Rietdyk, Denis Kosnar, John Chadderton, Andrew Ha and Maria Kouppas. Richard Lawrence Community Chairman.

Vocational visit – 11 April to the MCG (guided tour by Alan Joyce) followed by a visit to the National Sports Museum. Starts at 10am. Numbers limited to 25. Normal cost $30, to us $16! Please book early through Peter Duras.

The last instalment from our Philippines Delegation….. The touring party finished off their successful trip with a Philippines-style cruise, a cultural dinner and an entertaining karaoke session. Regrettably, no audio files are available.

District Conference 14-16 March 2013 A handful of Club members and partners enjoyed two days of high-profile speakers and country hospitality at the Albury District Conference. John Blackman of Hey, Hey It’s Saturday fame was the very entertaining MC and provided the crowd with many funny stories as he introduced the speakers. These included author and former Australian rugby cap, Peter FitzSimons AM, Marilynne Paspaley AM from the Paspaley Group, Carolyn Cresswell, co-founder of Carman’s foods, former ABC and SBS presenter, Indira Naidoo, and polio survivor Suzi Duncan AO. The Royce Abbey Oration was delivered by former Olympian and Vice-President of The Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Committee, Kevan Gosper AO. His topic ‘Leadership in Community Service’ was well received and was a fitting tribute to Royce’s outstanding achievements in his 59 years as a Rotarian. Two Royce Abbey Awards were presented by the Rotary Club of Camberwell following the oration.

Other highlights were feature acts by the current group of exchange students. Charlotte continues to impress us all and left for the three week safari early Sunday morning. Bob Glindemann of the RC of Melbourne was a worthy recipient of the ’Service Above Self’ award. PDG Ian Knight received the District Service Award for outstanding commitment to D9800 over many years. Coincidentally, Royce Abbey was the inaugural recipient of this award, presented by then DG Ian Knight at the 1988 District Conference also held in Albury. Finally, D9800 was declared a Peacebuilder District due to its commitment to the Rotary Peace Fellow program. We hold the honour of being the only district in the world to have successfully nominated a Peace Fellow in each of the 17 years of the program.

Rotary Youth Exchange – A Life Changing Experience! Host Families Invited! Kind and caring Rotary approved Host Families are invited from the community, to assist local Rotary clubs care for excellent secondary school aged students from other parts of the world. A Host Family is a vital part of this cultural and educational exchange and typically hosts a student on a voluntary basis for a period of between 10 to 16 weeks. In so doing, a Host Family becomes a Friend of Rotary International and invariably makes lifelong friendships with families from all around the world. Please refer to the D9800 Youth Exchange website: www.rotaryyouthexchangeaustralia.com.au for further information.

The lighter side of life….. Helpful tips for the week…..

You can divide and store ground meat in a zip

lock bag. Just break off how much you need and

keep the rest in the freezer for later.

If you place a wooden spoon

over a pot of boiling water, it

won't boil over.

You can run a paper bag through

your printer for colourful lunch or

party bags
