President’s Night: Always a cause for celebration, members, partners and friends joined with President Grant and First Lady Margie in kicking up their heels in style at President’s Night held at Sherwood Receptions. Although primarily a night of fun and frivolity, there were a number of formalities to which President Grant attended before too many corks were popped! The first presentation was to our own Charlotte who, despite collecting many souvenirs from her time in Australia, was missing the one treasure with which to complete her collection – a Rotary Club of Essendon dinner badge. President Grant ‘inducted’ Charlotte as a junior member of our Club with the classification of Exchange Student to the rousing applause of the gathering. The honour of Rotarian of the Year was bestowed upon a very deserving Peter Baker for his long-term and consistent dedication to Rotary, both at Club and District level. Peter is the first to put his hand up when help is needed and he is to be commended for his unfailing enthusiasm for Rotary and the many great causes we support. Neil (Grant) Henderson and Veronica (Margie) O’Sullivan led us through a typical day in the life of the Sheldon estate, with bookmaker Glenn Smith, jockey Lino Airo-Farulla and Steve (Graeme Wood aka The Hulk) Chandler rounding off the players. Ian Thomas, Roger Leask, Neil Henderson and Peter Baker all had a hand in the preparation of the script – well done to all!

A Paul Harris Recognition was then presented to a very surprised Stephen Roe with President Grant mentioning Stephen’s involvement in various Club and District committees and activities. Unbeknownst to Peter and Stephen, their children and their partners had been invited to attend the night and they were brought into the room as the awards were announced, adding a lovely touch to these milestone events. A group of thespians then provided a bit of horse-play for the traditional skit which summarised President Grant’s year at the helm.

There were several more official actions to be performed and Immediate Past President Stephen Roe had the pleasure of presenting President Grant with his retirement gift, a traditional gesture in recognition of the significant effort expended by our out-going Presidents. A total of $600 was collected from members and President Grant will look resplendent in the new sports jacket he intends to buy. Grant then handed a bottle of fine wine to incoming President Boris Struk and declined Boris’ kind invitation to extend his Presidency by another year. Margie presented a lovely sheath of flowers to First Lady-elect, Ineke Struk. We wish Boris and Ineke a thoroughly enjoyable and successful year. Earlier in the evening, Roger Leask had attended part of the District Governor’s Changeover function to support his good friend and incoming DG, Ross Butterworth. Roger returned with the news that our Club had received the Club Bulletin Award for clubs with more than 46 members and President Grant passed on the framed certificate to bulletin editor, Stephen Roe. A special honour was then bestowed on PP Roger Leask to mark the presentation of the 200th Royce Abbey Award. The actual number has now reached 211 which means that $211,000 has been donated to The Rotary Foundation in honour of Past World President and our member and dear friend, Royce Abbey. Roger’s outstanding idea has seen many Rotarians recognised for their enthusiasm and commitment to the Object of Rotary and the awards have funded vocational scholarships for several candidates from underprivileged, Asia-Pacific countries. A wonderful initiative – congratulations Roger!

Charlotte’s final report…..

Nearly the end of my exchange, time is running out. One of the exchange student who went on safari with me already left 3 weeks ago and some more Monday, it’s hard to say bye. In a month it’ll be my turn… I’m excited to go back home, catch up with my family and friends after a year away but I’ll be sad to leave my Australian life. In May I went to the mother run and ran 8km and I’ve been out a lot with my friends. Time is going so fast so I try to do heaps before I leave. Peter and Leigh took me to a zoo, it was great fun. We spend our afternoon there and went to a bird show, really enjoyed it. After all this amazing months that I had in Australia there was one thing that I really wanted to do. Taking a photo with a koala was the last thing on my wish list. Kerry Roe took me to the wildlife park in Ballarat, I had the opportunity to go in the closure with the koala and have a photo taken. It was amazing; I really want to bring one home. A few weeks after Peter took me to the football with Kate, William, Eva and Matthew. The bombers were playing so I had my beanie and my scarf on. I had a really good night with my host family. I’ve also been to heaps of Rotary dinner on Monday that I always really enjoy. I've also done my last speech at Rotary. I went to Phillip Island last week; it was so great to see the penguin going out of the sea. Not much time left at school, soon I need to say bye to everyone... Charlotte Editor’s note: Charlotte flies out with Emirates at 9.35pm on Tuesday 9th July, customs clearance from 7.35pm, so be there early if you wish to farewell our lovely French friend).

Heart-warming message all the way from Ireland!

President Grant recently received the following email from an Irish Rotarian:

Hi President Grant. Firstly let me introduce myself. My name is Simon Mc Arthur and I'm the Incoming President of Limavady Rotary Club all the way over in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. I've been browsing a few Rotary web sites looking for one who supply aid to Burma. Particularly to Burmese children and came across your page. I'll try to keep a long story short! In the weeks coming up to Christmas 2012 a TV channel here ran a campaign to help the "forgotten children of Burma". I've an 8 year old son Sam who watched this upsetting advert and decided he wanted to do something to help. For an 8 year old to even think like that I decided I've got to go with this. Asking him his intentions on how he was going to help he went on to say that he was going to work to myself every Saturday until he had £100. With this £100 he explained how it would provide some blankets. Anyway he stuck to his word and helped myself in my workshop every Saturday until he achieved his goal. I was telling my own father what he was doing and he made a small fireside quiz for him. Then my own Rotary Club got behind him promising him that if he reached £200 they would match it giving him a possible total of £400. Due to a few donations and an overwhelmingly successful quiz my very proud wife and myself have a now 9 year old son who's raised a magnificent £820 which he wants to go to help these Burmese children. I think my calculations make this approx 1370 Australian dollars which needs a home. As I noticed on your own page you have a couple of members who are very active in this area and I was wondering if my son Sam could forward the money to your club and in return maybe have a photo or two showing him exactly what his efforts achieved. My thinking being is that if your club received his funds it would go to some place where it’s needed rather than tied up in administration. He needs to see that his efforts did help someone somewhere. Perhaps you would be kind enough to let me know your thoughts on this or if you have any better ideas on how to distribute. Monica and Michael, owners of the East Pantry at 14 Centreway, Keilor East have a Rotary Club of Essendon Inc. collection box on their counter. They do not take tips but encourage their customers to donate to local charities. Monica says they are happy to support the Rotary Club of Essendon because of the great work the Club does in the community. It has always been their philosophy to encourage staff and customers to be community focused. The Rotary box has been cashed in on two occasions and a total of $210 has been collected.
