Professor Byrne and Chairman Boris taking questions at Tues lunch Ed oversees the largest University in Australia with staff of over 15,000 and students number numbers over 75,000 that university being Monash. Todays Uni’s originated out of Germany in the early 1800,s they created a new form of Uni’ based on the ethos of “Where ever knowledge takes you “ which all Universities worldwide now try to follow. In Australia Uni’ numbers started to grow during the 1960’-70’s with the advent of free education and a break down in the elitist attitudes that had previously marked attendance. Ed felt that todays Uni’s had to engage a lot more with the local community than in the past. He mentioned that in 50 years over 50% of the Australian population would achieve a degree. He said that Government funding of Uni’s in Australia had dropped by over $10 Billion in the last 20 years and as a consequence Uni’s now had to source more than 60% of there funding from private means. He suggested that the “HEX” user pay scheme was leaving too many students with excessive debt once entering the workforce. He was very positive about Overseas students studing at Monash Uni with over 30% of student from 160 countries at Monash Uni. Back to School Exercise Book Project – DIK needs your help ! The “Back to School Specials” specials usually feature cheap exercise books, the

basic building block for education. This is the item most requested from Donations In

Kind by Clubs for their overseas projects.

For the past couple of years we have been distributing a wonderful donation of

750,000 books, but all good things come to an end and they are almost gone.

With books available for a few cents (Big W sometimes have packs of 3 for 10cents) it’s

a simple and affordable way for Members and their friends to support a student who

needs our help. If you see a store running a Back to School promotion have a look

around. There is a very good chance cheap books will be available and it never hurts

to ask.

A new No Show but “Do Tell” segment

Roger Leask – Talks about Auto Transmissions A new and exciting 3 minute talk was introduced this week with Roger Leask kicking off with a 3 minute chat about (AT) Auto Transmissions used in Motor cars.

Roger told us a brief history of AT’s with the first type being used in the early 1900’s and then mass production with the Model “T” Ford. The AT’s were rudimentary had required the movement using a pedal system. They were very innovative for the time. By 1940 GM had perfected the AT’s to the

extend that changed gears by themselves. Roger compared an AT to the Human body stating that they had a Pump- Heart,

-AT Fluid - Blood, Temp control – perspiration, Bands and clutches – legs and arms , Brain - ???? . Next week we have a surprise 3 minute speaker ! Great talk Roger most interesting and very educational.
