Antelope Hills Golf Course A Community Asset

Antelope Hills Golf Course was established in 1956 with the opening of the

North Course, a par 71 18-hole course located on Highway 89 north of

downtown Prescott. The PGA-sanctioned course is open to the public

year-round. Designed by Lawrence Hughes, the course is a traditional layout,

which features tree lined fairways, and fast bent grass greens. In 1992 the

City of Prescott opened the par 72 South Course, designed by Gary Panks,

which features open fairways, generous mounding, large undulating greens

and panoramic views of Mingus Mountains, Granite Dells, Granite Mountain

and a 100 mile view of the San Francisco Peaks, the highest point in Arizona.

The South course includes multi-tees, bent grass greens and three lakes.

Antelope Hills hosts over 80 tournaments and events annually. Among the list

of tournaments are the Arizona Golf Association’s Father & Son, Northern

Arizona Amateur, Arizona State Boys Championship, Southwest Section PGA

State Junior Championship, Smoki Amateur and the Outhouse Open.

Additionally, the facility is host to over 30 charity tournaments that raise

much needed funds for the respective organizations. Antelope Hills Golf

Course is also the home to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Men’s and

Women’s golf teams as well as Prescott and Chino Valleys high school golf

teams and has a vibrant Special Olympics and Junior golf program.

Antelope Hills also offers a full service restaurant (Manzanita Grill) and a 160

seat banquet hall (Centennial Center) that hosts over 150 events per year. In

2018 the City commissioned an economic impact/benefit analysis for

Antelope Hills performed by the National Golf Foundation, a leading authority

on this topic. The result of the study showed that in addition to the

$7,000,000 in economic impact Antelope Hills has on the local economy, it

also is the conduit for over $100,000 being raised for local charities. So

whether you are looking for a round of golf with friends, a place to hold a

special event or just a great dining experience please feel free to join us at

Ceremonial Pads at Watson and Goldwater Lakes

For many years, some engaged couples have chosen to hold their wedding ceremonies and receptions at

one of Prescott's lakes. To facilitate these and other ceremonies and various celebrations, the City has

built two ceremonial pads, at Goldwater and Watson Lakes. In 2014 the first ceremonial pad (capacity

100) was built at Goldwater Lake (top photo). Located in Prescott National Forest, this facility sits between

two ramadas, Lakeview and Pinetop (capacity 100

each), which are ideal for receptions. All three of

these facilities are available for rent independently.

A new and larger ceremonial pad was built at

Watson Lake in 2018 (middle photo). With

stunning views of Watson Lake and the Dells, this

area has been a favorite spot for many weddings.

It is a short distance from Watson Lake's Upper

Ramada (bottom photo) . Both have a capacity of

150. Due to proximity, these two facilities cannot

be rented individually. For information on these

and all park rentals, see page seven.

The Trails & Natural Parklands Storm Ranch North Trails Completed

With only some fine tuning, including the installation of

signage, the 6.4 miles of trails at Storm Ranch North

(commonly referred to as the Storm Trails), just east of

Peavine Trail, is now complete. The trails sit on the 160

acres purchased by the City In January 2018. Trail

construction began in early February 2018 and took Over

the Hill Gang over 5,500 hours to complete.

Noted for its variety, the trail system showcases narrow

canyons, balanced rocks, boulder fields, and a stroll along

Boulder Creek. Because of the many rock formations, the

trails have Flintstone inspired names such as Bedrock City,

Bamm-Bamm, and Pebbles. The last trail to be completed,

Yabba Dabba View Trail offers 360 degree views. Other

higher elevation trails also include some impressive views

of the Dells, Glassford Hill, Watson Lake, and Granite

Mountain. (See Storm Trails map below)

2018 Trail Counts

In 2018, trail counters were placed on two trails and three popular activity venues. Using previous figures on trails not counted, estimated visits on 100 miles of trail remains steady and totaled just over 800,000 visits in 2018. Even with the addition of new trails, yearly trail usage continues to be steady on all City trails. A yearly comparison on two of the busiest trails with counters for five consecutive years demonstrates this trend of steady trail usage:

2014 2015 2016 *2017 2018

Constellation 37,475 38,203 47,084 41,083 51,339 Peavine 58,127 59,396 59,624 53,568 58,375

*Figures for 2017 were distorted or down on these two trails due to 3 months of lost data on Peavine and roundabout highway construction at Constellation Trail. All other trail counts were steady or up.

Sports Page

Along with Prescott's population growth, sports programs continue to grow

and expand. With this growth of tournaments, youth leagues, schools, and

adult leagues, schedules tend to overlap. In an attempt to resolve

scheduling conflicts between leagues and organizations, Recreation Services

created the Athletics Board. The Board's intent is to function as a committee

comprised of City sponsored field user groups. Formed in 2010, the

committee meets bi-monthly. Representatives from the various leagues and

organizations come together for scheduling purposes and special projects.

Aside from scheduling, maintenance issues are also a consideration.

Reseeding and other field maintenance concerns and projects may make

fields unplayable for a period of time. Because the sports facilities are

multiuse, often soccer and softball leagues share the same fields.

Maintenance requires time to set up fields for every sport being played.

The bi-monthly meetings are successful in alleviating conflicts between

groups that use the fields during the sports seasons. The groups are

informed of maintenance schedules and projects. The groups also inform

staff of issues they notice requiring attention.

Since the formation of the Athletics Board, partnering opportunities between

the City and user groups for facility improvements have

surfaced. Partnering user groups can propose an

improvement project with cost sharing between the City and

group. In some cases, improvements may be split between

several groups and the City. This process has helped to

improve and enhance Prescott's parks and facilities. Today

there are over 20 user groups utilizing fields year round.

Volunteers/Staff Bio Volunteer Park Rangers

A common comment Park Rangers hear from visitors to Prescott parks and trails is not just how beautiful

they are, but how clean the parks and trails are, free of litter and trash. Many have pointed out that most

places they have visited do not compare and consider Prescott's parks the most pristine they have seen.

Along with maintenance staff, the Park Rangers do their part in contributing to the City's excellent

reputation. While on patrol, the Rangers duties include picking up trash along with monitoring the trails,

checking for parking violations, reporting graffiti and maintenance issues, special projects, answering

questions, as well as acting as ambassadors for the

City. In 2018 Ranger reports indicated a significant

increase in trash collected with 153.5, 13 gallon

bags. This was almost a 50% increase over 2017

when 104.1, 13 gallon bags of trash were collected.

Although trash and litter has decreased significantly

since the Volunteer Ranger Program began in 2009,

it appears that it may be on the rise. Help us keep

Prescott's excellent reputation for clean parks and

trails in tact. Remember to use the many trash cans

located throughout the parks and use common trail

etiquette, pack it in, pack it out.

Jerry Walsh came to Antelope Hills Golf Course in May of 2007

after spending 15 years on the East Coast as Construction

Supervisor for the PGA Tour at TPC River Highlands in

Cromwell, Connecticut and then as Project Manager for the

construction of a Gary Player course at Lyman Orchards Golf

Club, a 36 hole facility in Middlefield, Connecticut. Jerry

remained at Lyman Orchards as their Golf Course

Superintendent until arriving here in Prescott.

While at Antelope Hills, Jerry has overseen the maintenance

230 acres of turfgrass , the servicing of 4500 irrigation heads

and the distribution of over 700 acre feet of effluent water

each year. His responsibilities have also included supervising

daily mowing routines, fertilizing and overseeing the proper

and judicious use of chemical applications.

Jerry remains proud of some of the improvements made at

Antelope Hills over the years, such as restoring many bunkers

throughout both golf courses, adding new Xeriscape landscape to the Clubhouse surrounds and making

the Driving Range more user-friendly by providing better playing surfaces and creating target greens. He

is also credited for developing a sound agronomic program for the golf course greens. Antelope Hills has

always been known for keeping their greens fast and firm.

Jerry grew up in the Valley, and is a second generation Arizona native. He is also a U.S. Navy veteran and

a University of Arizona graduate where he majored in Agronomy. He currently makes his home in the

Mountain Club in Prescott and resides with his wife of 41 years, Erin. They have two daughters and two

grandchildren. After over 30 years in the Golf Industry he is planning to retire this coming May, and he

says he’s enjoyed his time here and appreciates the opportunity given to him by the City. His future

plans include lots of travel, home improvements and an occasional round of golf.

"Spotlight On" periodically features a different Recreation Services Department employee.

Jerry Walsh, C.G.C.S., observes the new bunker construction on number 18 of the North Course.

The work was completed by Wadsworth Construction out of their regional office in Buckeye,

AZ.
