Sandi’s StoryA JRMC EMPLOYEE JOURNEY

“Look around you. Appreciate what you have. Nothing will be the same in a year.”

Sandra Myers, JRMC admissions clerk was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy Stage 2 Kidney Failure. She is undergoing chemotherapy and steroid treatments as a series patient in the Jamestown Regional Medical Center Emergency Department.

“I wouldn’t want to be with any other group of caring staff and coworkers to help me through this,” she says. “For this I want to tell you thank you for being here for me.”

Myers has always been a people person. Working at JRMC for over a year, she has been cross trained in multiple departments from the front desk admissions to radiology. “Making a connection with someone to make their day just a little better or brighter makes my job worthwhile and have more meaning to me,” she says. Evenwithadifficultjourneyahead,shenotesthat helping others is one of the “simplest ways to fillourlifewithjoyandfulfillment.”

“With being able to work the different departments within JRMC I have also gained a new family of co-workers, for the staff at JRMC not only works their hardest to accommodate our patient’s needs, but they work together as teams to ensure that employees can count on each other.”

Curt Togstad C.A.R.E. Fund, we have begun providing gas cards

to patients who have to travel for care.

Minor procedures and routine clinic appointments are seen in the JRMC Clinic. Some gynecology and obstetric surgeries are performed in the state-of-the-art surgical services department at JRMC.

You may have heard about the dozens of reasons to choose JRMC for care. One of those reasons is the newest provider, Dr. Bailey Runkles, gynecologist and obstetrician. She provides care for the whole woman specializing specifically in high-risk pregnancies, infertility care, contraception and incontinence.

Previously, women with high-risk pregnancies were transferred to bigger hospitals. Now, these women can receive that care close to home.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Bailey Runkles join us,” says K.C. DeBoer, JRMC president and CEO. “An OB/GYN will supplement the high-quality primary care services already offered in this community.”

“Jamestown has a wonderful group of family physicians whoprovideexcellentobstetriccare,”Dr.Runklessays,“Mygoal is to be an asset to their practice and provide prenatal care to those higher-risk patients who would otherwise have to travel.”

Dr. Runkles graduated high school in Knob Noster, Mo., and completed her undergraduate studies at Hood College in Frederick, Md. She attended medical school at Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va.

In addition to her professional work, Dr. Runkles has a passion for education and volunteering. She’s volunteered her time, providing relief to socioeconomically depressed communities in Virginia, offering health information and free screenings. She also assessed and treated Dominican and Haitian refugees at a free clinic in the Dominican Republic. In 2010 and 2011, she taughthealthybehaviors,preventativehealthandfirstresponderskills to adolescents, teachers and local law enforcement.

Dr. Runkles and her husband, Joshua, chose Jamestown because its a small town that they could grow into. “We were overwhelmed by the welcome and support we received when we came to visit,” says Runkles.

f any good can come from having cancer, it is an idea to help others. After Jennifer Lindsey received the difficultdiagnosisofbreastcancer,shequicklywentthrough surgery and radiation.

“RightafterIgotdonewithmyfirstradiationappointment I received a ‘boobie pillow’,” shares Lindsey. “I suppose I shouldn’t even call them that,” she laughs, “but that’s what they are.”

Whattheyare,isablessing.Afterherfirstradiationappointment, a volunteer brought the small pillow to comfort her post lumpectomy. Lindsey shares that they are the best gift she’s ever received.

Lindsey was diagnosed with Stage I breast cancer on April19th.Atfirst,itwasn’tevenclearthatitwascancer.

“I have dense tissue, so until my biopsy, it couldn’t be confirmed,”sharesLindsey.

“Get your mammogram is all I have to say. My lump was found because of 3D mammography.”

The“lump”was5x6mm.Lindseyhadsurgeryat JRMC. The surgeon had to remove 16 mm to make sure all of the cancerous tissue was removed. “It leaves a holeandthatspacefillswithfluid.Itwaspainful.Mybrawould rub that spot and it hurt…hurt, hurt, hurt,” Lindsey grimaces as she recalls that moment in her journey.

Lindsey and her friend and colleague, Barb Togstad, handmade a variety of pillows for each patient and placed them in a bag with instructions.

“The small pillows can be placed between the body and arm to relieve discomfort. There’s also a seat belt cover to support women in the car,” shares Togstad. If her name sounds familiar, Togstad developed a named JRMC Foundation endowment fund in memory of both her parents who passed away from cancer. She also works with Hope Help and Healing. Both the fund and the grief support group provide gas cards to cancer patients.

Lindsey spent her 10-year employment gift money on a sewing machine and learned how to sew. Togstad donated the fabric. Together they have already supplied fivebagsthatwillgotowomenwhohavemastectomiesor lumpectomies at JRMC. A note in the bags says, “If you are struggling with cancer, remember that God is the source and giver of all true hope. While we were making these pillows, we said a prayer for you.”

“I was blessed with the boobie pillows. Sometimes it is the little things on this journey. Because they helped me so much and for so long…I still use them, I wanted to help others,” shares Lindsey.

Golf supports cancer careHONORS BAENEN

eamJerry’sKidsretaineditsfirst-placetitlethisyearinJamestownRegional Medical Center’s GOLF “fore” GOOD tournament.

The team’s name, “Jerry’s Kids,” is in memory of the late Jerry Baenen. Baenen had played in each GOLF “fore” GOOD tournament since the event’s origin seven years ago.

After his death in December 2016, JRMC organized this summer’s GOLF “fore” GOOD in Baenen’s memory. The tournament benefitstheupcomingJRMCCancerCenter.

Baenen is remembered as a lovable golfer who was generous with both his time and money. A cancer survivor, Baenen knew that cancerisnotanillnessyoufightalone.Tohelp,Baenenvolunteeredhis time with Stutsman County Relay for Life. He’d also drive people to their oncology treatments in Bismarck, if they needed it.

Team Jerry’s Kids consisted of Baenen, who was in his 80s, Len Orr, age 54, as well as Orr’s stepson, Brent Giesler, and friend, Michael Nogosek, who are both in their 20s. This year, Baenen’s daughter, Julie Jeske, played in his honor. She also took top prize fortheJerryBaenenLongestPuttContest.Jerry’sKidstookfirstplace in the contest with a score of 48. Team Layered – Cody Champagne, Lucas Morken, Brian Meyer and Cody Lausch – took second with a score of 49.

“I will always remember my dad saying ‘Drive for show, putt for dough,’” Jeske says.

Although golf season is over, the drive for many is not. Miles matter when it comes to cancer care. The tournament proceeds were more than $28,000 and will help make local cancer care a reality.

Each year, the JRMC Cancer Center will provide chemotherapy infusions for more than 100 residents of Jamestown and the surrounding communities.

“Cancer is a battle you don’t fight by yourself,” says Jeske. “It pretty much takes a village to help you through it.” TheJRMCCancerCenterwillincludefiveinfusionroomsandone bed, a consultation area and space for nurses and staff. Recruitment for an oncologist is still in progress.

Angels among usGRATITUDE FOR GIVING THIS ANGELS FUND ‘WINGS’

“Forty years ago, my daughter was stillborn. She was full term and very tiny. I had experienced a difficult nine-month pregnancy,” shares a mother who was so thankful to hear about the Advocating for Neonatal Grief and Early Loss Support (ANGELS) fund, that she stopped in the JRMC Foundation officetoshareherstoryandsupportforinfantlossatJRMC.

“As I accepted that beautiful letter and gift from this mother,” shares Lisa Jackson, JRMC Foundation Director, “I was heartbroken. Back then, families were told to forget it and move on.” It is healing to be able to support others.

Dr.MandySorlieknowsthatfirsthand.Asshewitnessesexpectantmothers who don’t get to bring their babies home from the hospital. After driving home in tears after a stillborn delivery and sharing her experencewithherhusband,Daveandtheirchildren,Olivia,11;Owen,8;andLauren,4;theydiscussedcreatingafund.

“As parents, we couldn’t imagine what it would feel like to experience infant death,” Dr. Sorlie shares. “Dave just looked at me and said ‘we can do this.’ TheANGELSfundhelpspaymedicalbillsforparentsexperiencinginfant loss at JRMC. This year, the 2nd Annual GOLF “fore’ ANGELS event hosted 18 teams and raised more than $9,000.

This October, the Wave of Light ceremony provides a service and support for infant and pregnancy loss. “Healing happens though sharing personal stories and meeting others who know what you feel,” shares Renea Lunde, RN, JRMC Family BirthPlace. The event included a short walk, balloon release for angels and blessings for families.

At JRMC Foundation’s annual Pillars of Giving event, supporters were engrossed by nationally recognized speaker and author Mike Schlappi. His speech, “Shot Happens, I got shot, what’s your problem?” shared his story of resilience after being shot as a boy by his best friend and the healthcare professionals that changed his life. Schlappi helped us all accept that we may have a barrier or something in life that paralyzes us, perhaps if only in our mind or heart, but that taking the right position creates the outcome.

SMETTES NAMED PHILANTHROPISTS OF THE YEAR This year the Philanthropist of the Year went to a couple known for their volunteer work with service clubs, disaster relief, business development, education and healthcare. Dr. David and Claudette Smette are passionate about making the community, and the world, a better place.

They have truly made a difference in the lives of thousands. Dave, who became a member of JRMC Foundation Board of Directors in 2009 believes in the work of JRMC “because it helps the whole community.”

ClaudetteisamemberJRMCAuxiliary.InadditiontoSmette’swork at JRMC, he and Claudette are also active with the Jamestown Rotary Club, Jamestown Tourism Board of Directors, U.S. Small Business Administration’s local SCORE chapter, the Jamestown Community Foundation and Jamestown Chamber of Commerce. Prior to his life as a full-time volunteer, Smette served as the superintendent of Jamestown Public Schools. They have two daughters, Candace and Pamela.

Daniel Kornovich, and his parents, Edmund and Florence, will be remembered for leaving a legacy that continues to help people they’ve never meet.

Kornovich Healing GardenNEW SPACE DEDICATION, NEXT PHASE

aniel Kornovich was a regular at the Jamestown Hospital Wellness Center. He always arrived with a “good morning friend.” Farming, ranching, his wellness family and taking care of others was important to him.

After his death in 2009, Kornovich left a transformational gift to Jamestown Regional Medical Center in his will. With a portion of the money, the Kornovich Healing Garden was created. The landscaping focuses on the beauty of North Dakota’s natural terrain, grasses, shrubs and trees.

Thegardenwasexpandedthisspringandincludesa1.5 mile walking path around the campus, additional seating, water feature and additional green space for events.

Bonnie Dewald, JRMC patient accounts clerk, was a friend of Kornovich and now looks at the new gardens from herofficewindow.“Ihaveseenarecentcancersurvivorsitand stare at the beautiful fountain and count her blessings. I have seen families gather to support one another while a hurting member is in the hospital. I have seen walking groups comeandtakeonthepathstokeepfit.”

“When we think of healing, we think of tests, equipment, and medicine. We don’t always remember the power of resting in a serene space. The Kornovich family gift will help people heal for decades to come,” says, Lisa Jackson, JRMC foundation director.

A breath of airA TESTIMONIAL OF CARE

n his moment of distress, she was there for him, even on her night off. That...he shares, made the difference.

“I should be dead,” says David deSousa. He arrived at Jamestown Regional Medical Center via ambulance. He couldn’t breathe. And because of it, he could barely talk. The JRMC team worked to stabilize him. While doing so, they called one of JRMC’s Respiratory Therapists, Erin Stewart. At 1:30 am, the off-duty RT arrived at the hospital.

A respiratory therapist cares for patients who struggle to breathe. Common ailments include chronic respiratory diseases like asthma or emphysema. Respiratory therapists also provide emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, stroke, drowning or shock. Former patients don’t always remember Stewart’s name, but they often remember her “character.” In addition to being kind, hard-working and caring, Stewart nearly always accessorizes with a comic book superhero.

“It makes sense. She’s like Wonder Woman to me,” smiles deSousa.

A retired scientist and Vietnam veteran, deSousa struggles with several ailments including diabetes, congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The day he came to JRMC’s Emergency Department, a new medication interfered with his ability to breathe. Upon arrival, he was using every muscle in his body to get air. It still wasn’t enough. To help take the pressure off his lungs, Stewart applied a Bipap machine. “The Darth Vader mask,” jokes deSousa. The treatment is non-invasive and helps force air into a person’s lungs.

To help patients like deSousa, JRMC Foundation is raising money to bring Vapotherm technology to JRMC (pictured right). For patients who can’t breathe, it will be their super hero. “It’s a good thing,” says Deb Beaton, JRMC respiratory care therapist. “This would be new technology to JRMC, but it has long been proven to improve patient outcomes and reduce the length of hospital stays.”

Whether it is emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma or bronchiectasis, Vapotherm will help with breathlessness for premature babies to geriatrics.

“It’s a scary thing, not being able to breathe,” deSousa says. That’s something Stewart knows too. Diagnosed with asthma as a child, she’s experienceditherself.

That’s why Stewart, even on her night off, stayed at JRMC with deSousa until 3:30 am.

“If it were my loved one, I’d want the medical professional to stay,” she says. “So that’s my philosophy of care at JRMC.”

Hospice babyWEAVING FRIENDSHIPS AND PROVIDING PEACE

dopted as a newborn in Alabama, she was born on March 31st. Meet PenelopeLameria Ruth. Her name means weaving friendships. She lets anybody and everybody hold her. She is the “hospice” baby.

On the day pictured here, Penelope visited LuVerne Brobst, whose arm was already outstretched,proppedonapillow,waitingforherarrival.ThisexperiencebroughtpeacetoBrobstinherfinaldays.Theconnectionrenewedthespiritofhercaregivers.

“We get so tired of death, Penelope gives us the fresh breath of life,” shares Kathleen Heller, JRMC Hospice Chaplain.

Penelope is the daughter of Kalen and Sarah Heller, and Kathleen’s granddaughter. Kalen is also a chaplain with the Jamestown Regional Medical Center Home Health and Hospice team. As Kalen goes to visit patients, he occasionally brings Penelope too.

Friendly staff and prompt and courteous service. The meals were

excellent. The nursing staff are golden! All who had a hand in my

comfort and recovery…some 40+ individuals made my stay a mini

vacation! The operating team was superb!
