a.Plow the field after the first heavy rain.

Harrow the field thoroughly (one lengthwiseand two crosswise) when water accumulatesin the field. Close all openings to preventdraining of water. Leave the field submergedfor several days (about 7-10 days) to allow

    decomposition of plant debris.

    b. Plow and then harrow thoroughly (one

lengthwise and two crosswise). Leave for

another 7-10 days and harrow and leveling,

    Keep the field flooded.

    c. Do the final leveling as uniform as possible toeliminate uneven soil surfaces. Drain excess waterand maintain a thin film of water on the soil surface

to prevent drying of the soil.

NOTE: Allowing weeds to germinate and emerge inbetween tillage operation will help reduce the weedseed bank in the soil, which may ultimately reducethe incidence of weeds in the crop. Well leveledfield will make better control of water level tomanage weeds.

a.Seeding rate used may range from 60 300

kg/ha. Higher seeding rate is used to increase

competitive ability of rice against weeds,

however, it may not necessarily increase yield. Some farmers use high seeding rate to

compensate for damages due to snails, birds,

    rats and uncontrolled flooding.

b.Sowing of wet direct-seeded rice is generally

    done by broadcasting pre-germinated seeds

unto puddled soil. This method restricts the

use of manual weeding and mechanical

    weeding extremely difficult or impractical.

Row-seeding is more flexible when choosing

    weed control method.R

ow-seeding can bedone using a drum-seeder. In addition to

sowing in rows, drum seeder also reduces the

amount of seeds used without reduction in yield

compared to broadcast seeding. See Figure 1on how to use a drum seeder.
