Participating in God’s Mission
“I can do what I want.” Have you ever heard anyone say these words?
Perhaps it was a teenager who had just turned eighteen and was eager to
assert his rights as an ‘adult.’ Or maybe it was a husband and father handing
down his final decision to the family as head of the household. Holding a
position of power can sometimes create the illusion that “I can do what I
want.”
But the truth is that all of us, from the smallest child to the leader of a
nation, have to submit and answer to someone. There is only One – the Lord
of heaven and earth – who can truly make the claim, “I can do what I want.”
Essentially, that’s what He demonstrates in the Old Testament book of
Jonah when He tells His prophet to go and preach against the city of Nineveh.
When Jonah rebels and runs the other way, the Lord makes it clear to Jonah,
and to all of us, that we are not in a position to question Him, quarrel with
Him, or give Him orders about what He can or can’t do. If He wants to give a
pagan city the opportunity to change their wicked ways, He can. If He wants
to use us as His servants to perform that task, He can. And if He wants to
withhold His punishment and forgive those who repent, no matter who they
are, He can because He is the Lord, and there is no other.
God is the potter, and we are only the clay. Put yourself in His hands and
allow Him to do what He wants in your life today.
