POTOSI SIDEWALK PLANBY: TEAM SIDEWALK
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The city of Potosi has obtained grants for installing sidewalks in different parts of the city and have relied on grant funding for improvements to the sidewalks. However, with more people walking, the city sees a need for greater connectivity throughout for pedestrian traffic. There is a need for a walking path from the city park to the elementary school. The city would like a path along Jefferson street and property owners are open to the idea. Also, the city would like a master plan for creating a connected city. The plan should be created in phases.
DESIGN LAYOUT
• Our main design objective is to build a sidewalk starting southeast of the intersection of Mill and Jefferson Street and ending at the elementary school. Doing this requires a sidewalk to be built along Jefferson Street and then turning south on Park Drive. There are multiple places to cross Park Drive which is a busy two lane highway.
• After this aspect of the sidewalk is completed, the city would also like a master plan to make the city more interconnected and foot traffic friendly by building sidewalks across the city.
OPTIONSRoute A: This route will have the sidewalk traveling on the south side of Jefferson Street starting at Mill street and continuing to Park Drive. At the intersection of Park Drive and Jefferson Street a crosswalk will be installed for safely crossing the 2-lane highway. From the crosswalk, the sidewalk will continue Southeast on Park Drive and end at the elementary school.
OPTIONS• Route B: This Route will have the sidewalk traveling on the south side of
Jefferson Street starting at Mill street and continuing to Park Drive. At Park Drive the sidewalk will turn Southeast and continue on the east side of Park Drive to Shy Small Engine Repair. A Crosswalk will be installed just north of the entrance to Shy’s parking lot that crosses into the elementary school parking lot.
OPTIONS• Route C: This Route will have the sidewalk traveling on the south side of
Jefferson Street starting at Mill street and continuing to Park Drive. At Park Drive the sidewalk will turn Southeast and continue on the east side of Park Drive to just south of the entrance of the rock quarry. The crosswalk will be positioned directly in front of the school and lead to the front entrance.
OPTIONS• The crosswalk has the option of being a basic striped crosswalk or a raised
high visibility crosswalk.• There will be signage from both directions informing of a pedestrian
crosswalk. The signs will be high visibility with flashing beacon to attract attention of motorist in advance of reaching the crosswalk.
