Comparedto2013,Singaporestotalpopulationin2014recordeda1.3percent growth.Thiswastheslowestgrowthrateinthelastdecade,drivenbyslowergrowthin non-resident population.In 2014, the number of Singapore citizens grew by 0.9 per cent, comparableto the growthratessince2010.Growthinthe residentpopulationremained stable.Growthinthenumberofnon-residentsslowedto2.9percentin2014,from4.0 per cent in 2013 and 7.2 per cent in 2012. Asignificantproportionofmalesandfemalesintheirthirtiesremainedsinglein 2013.Specificallyamong thoseaged30-34years,39percentof the malesand26per cent of the females remained single in 2013, compared to the 33 per cent for males and 20 per cent for females in 2003. Singapore Department of StatisticsPopulation Trends 20149 Education Profile1 Half of the resident population aged 25 years and over had at least post-secondary qualificationsin2013,upfrom32percentin2003(Chart1.8).Overthelastdecade, there were higher proportions having tertiary qualifications. Universitygraduatesconstituted27percentoftheresidentpopulationin2013, comparedto16percentadecadeago.Residentswithdiploma&professional qualifications also accounted for a larger share at 14 per cent in 2013, up from 9.6 per cent in 2003. Among residents aged 25-34 years in 2013, the proportion of university graduates went up to 51 per cent from 34 per cent in 2003.The proportion of residents with diploma & professional qualifications increased by a smaller extent, from 20 per cent to 24 per cent over the same period. Amongthoseaged35-44years,43percenthelduniversityqualificationsand20percenthelddiploma&professionalqualificationsin2013,anincreasefromthe corresponding proportions of 19 per cent and 10 per cent a decade ago. Comparatively, the proportion of children aged below 5 years was generally higher amongresidentsstayinginrelativelynewerestates.In2014,Punggolhadthehighest proportion of children at 11 per cent.Seven other planning areas each had the proportion of children in the range of 5 to 7 per cent (Chart 1.14). Anestimated3.15millionresidentswhoconstitutedabout82percentofthe resident population were staying in HDB flats in 2014.In 2014, there were eight planning areaswhereatleast90percentoftheresidentswerestayinginHDBflats.The proportionofHDBdwellerswasthehighestinPunggol,followedbyWoodlands(Chart 1.15).
