Well Done Cecilia! See you at Cambridge!

Well done to Cecilia Carlisle, who left Pool Academy just 2 years ago and who has been stud-

ying A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Biology. This week she had the great news

that she has been offered the chance to study Mathematics at Cambridge University in Sep-

tember. She already has a grade A* at A level in Mathematics and an AS in French and she is

really looking forward to the opportunity to work with some of the planet’s best minds in the

subject. Mrs Hill said ‘I am so pleased for Cecilia, who has always been an excellent mathe-

matician and I am so proud of her achievements in this subject. Cecilia is also an extremely

competent musician and she seems to do well in everything she puts her mind to. It is a

pleasure to see students from Pool Academy getting to the very top of the educational sys-

tem.” Cecilia said “I just cant believe it! It doesn't seem real.”

Well done Cecilia and good luck at Cambridge university!

Jordan referees abroad

Mr Hosking bumped into an ex student of ours and was pleased to find out

that Jordan Myatt has been following his dreams. Jordan was asked to send

us a summary of what he has been doing since he left Pool Academy and this

is what he wrote….

“I started refereeing and officiating youth

football games at the start of Year 11, in

2012. After realising that I possibly would-

n’t be able to make it as a professional

footballer, I started to think about being a

referee. I loved it and was very passionate

about it. After a year of refereeing the local leagues and teams around Corn-

wall and all across the country, I had an email from the FA saying that I was

being nominated to referee and Officiate abroad in Madrid. This was one of

the best and biggest European youth tournaments around and it was at the

home of the 9 times European Champions, Real Madrid. A few months after

getting that email and thinking nothing of it, I got an email, saying that I had a

place. Only 6 referees in Cornwall were going, I couldn’t believe my luck, I

was absolutely ecstatic. On the 20th June 2013 I flew out from Heathrow air-

port, and landed in Madrid. During my 9 days out in Madrid, I refereed acade-

my teams such as, Manchester United Academy, Manchester City Academy,

Real Madrid Academy and Atletico Madrid Academy. I was refereeing in fa-

mous grounds such as, The Coliseum Alfonso Pérez (Getafe Stadium) and The

Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano (Real Madrid’s 2nd team ground) in front of around

about 4,000 people every game. Since the trip to Madrid I have been refer-

eeing at the highest leagues in Cornwall, The South West Peninsula Premier

Division and The South West Peninsu-

la Division 1. I am now very deter-

mined to further my career as a

sportsman and an athlete, and I have

high aspirations of being a profes-

sional referee. I would like to thank

Pool Academy and especially the PE

department for the help and support

they have given, and this has helped

me to fulfil the career of my dreams.”

Well done Jordan for going after

your dream.

History Trip

Mr Turner and Miss Groves took 20 students to

London for a weekend on Friday 13th December.

There were worries that it might have been an

unlucky trip leaving on one of the most unlucky

days of the year – but fortunately the bus did not

catch fire this time!! . Some of the places we visit-

ed included Churchill’s Cabinet War Rooms, Cov-

ent Garden, Victoria Theatre to see the world fa-

mous Billy Elliot musical and the London Eye. The

students were brilliant and were a real asset to

the school. Mr Turner and I were very proud to be

accompanying you so well done!

Pool Academy's Science Club were set a challenge to build a solar powered racing car. Each team was given a set of equipment to construct their dragster. Sarah Tallboys the STEM coordinator from Cornwall College kindly provided the model kits and panels.

Cornish sunshine unfortunately did not have enough oomph to propel the cars so after the pupils had constructed their mean racing machines they attended an after school session at Cornwall College to race on the specially prepared solar track.

The eventual winners were, Miles Waterhouse, Maria Rowe & Courtney Bassett. Sci-ence Club will be starting again after February half term so keep an eye out for notices in the science department.

In December, maths students in Mrs Warwicker's year 9 class took part in a productive task involving data collection, analysing it and using the data to create a product that could be sold to make the most money.

The students from MA7 first started the task by writing questionnaires to put to members of the public. From this, each individual from the class had a good idea of what they wanted to sell, including cookies and cupcakes. The class debated on what charity would be chosen to send our money to and we chose 'Cancer Research' as we felt that it would benefit those in need and a lot of us had friends and family that had been af-fected. The students went home and baked scrumptious goodies to sell on Friday the thirteenth (unlucky for some but not for us!) It came to the Friday and most students came and helped out during break and we managed to raise

a staggering £33.66!

Ollie and James presented the money to Alec from 'Cancer Research' in as-sembly.

Pool Academy’s First Geology Fieldtrip

The first Geology field visit took place in January. The class

studied and interpreted the rocks and sediments at Godrevy.

A summary of the morning is described by Milli Rickard-Blight

(9KB).

“First we arrived at the beach and were given our safety hats. Dr. Ryan went through the safety aspects of the visit and then we headed down to the beach. Once we got got the beach we did some individual work looking at changes in the rocks along the cliff face. Next we shared our thoughts to build a picture of how it formed. Lastly we looked at the different rocks we would find in the river. Why they were like that? And how did they get their shape. With the rocks we created a timeline of the cycle on the beach. I learned a lot of new things. It was a great experience and we should do more field work as it’s an easy way to learn”.

Year 7 girls have finished their dance unit on The Blues Brothers. They have been learning about the culture and style of dance which is used in the film and on the music video 'Shake a tail feather.' They brought in costumes and props to allow them to 'get into character.' They per-formed to the other PE group on their last lesson. Well done to Mrs Strong's year 7 PE groups- their performance was excellent!

Yr 7 Get the Blues!

A group of MFL leaders in years 9 and 10 visited 5 primary schools in the area; Rosemellin, Roskear, Illogan, Treloweth and Pencoys, and organised a variety of festive activities to do with the pupils in order to get them in the festive spirit but also enlighten them on how Christmas is celebrated in France, Spain and Germany. At Pencoys and Illogan students organised a range of fantastic activities about how Christmas is celebrated in France and taught them a traditional French Christmas carol. At Roskear and Treloweth they taught the pupils the "Feliz Navidad" song and made paper chains with key spanish festive vocabulary. At Rosemellin, the students learnt about how Christmas is celebrated in Spain and in Germany.

A big MERCI BEAUCOUP, MUCHAS GRACIAS and VIELEN DANK to all the MFL leaders who took part.
