A Note from Pastor Karla
Happy New Year, Friends!
Even though the sun rose this morning as usual, it somehow takes on a new meaning when the calendar turns from December to January. It gives us a chance to pause and reflect and remember who we are, and more importantly, whose we are. At PLCPC it serves us well to remember what our purpose is and the expectations we have as a community of faith.
At PLCPC we seek to: Experience Jesus—Although many of us can recall a time in our lives when we said “yes” to Jesus, we aren’t simply called to a moment in time in our relationship with God. Instead, just as Jesus called his first disciples and asked them to, “Come”, he also asks us to journey with him in our discipleship. This journeying together requires steps of faith. So, as you enter this new year, how might you take risks to experience Jesus more? Journey into Deeper Faith—It begins with taking steps in faith and it continues with walking further and deeper into our identity with God. We do this by studying God’s word, engaging in contemplative practices, communing with God in prayer, and spurring one another on in community. Is there a group or an experience you might commit to this year that would help you journey deeper? Strengthen the Church—We are God’s hands and feet on this earth, and as crazy as it seems sometimes, God has entrusted the Church to live out in front of the world, what true community, compassion, and grace looks like. Although the Church is its people, our physical presence in this community is a visible reminder of God’s work here. How will you support the Church this year with your time, talent, and treasure?

A Note from Pastor Karla (continued from page 1)
Transform our World—You don’t need to get on an
airplane to change the world, you just need to be aware of
the Holy Spirit in your life and be open to being used by God
in your tiny sphere of the Universe. We change our world by
changing our community, one person at a time. We do that
best by loving and serving others without expectation. What
can you do this year to shine God’s light to your
neighbors, colleagues, friends, and family?
We offer opportunities in ministry in all of these areas here
at PLCPC. Keep your eyes open and a willing spirit, and you
might be surprised by how much God will work in your life!
Many blessings,
Pastor Karla

Deacons Give Thanks and Look Ahead to 2017
The Deacons closed out a productive and fun year with a Christmas celebration at the beautiful home of hostess Evelyn
Cintas. In the holiday spirit, Deacons created their own Advent ‘calendars’ filling baskets with socks, personal hygiene items
and other goodies, all of which were collected at the Christmas party and presented to the Loaves and Fishes Ministry, which
serves more than 300 people per month in our community. Funds raised by our Deacon Pancake Breakfasts were distribut-
ed to the Bells Ministry for care and refurbishment of its instruments ($600) and $900 will be designated as scholarship
funds for the thriving M.O.P.S. program. Looking back, a generous $4,056 was raised for Rancho Genesis at the October
Pancake Breakfast.

Bylaws Update The current Bylaws of the church were adopted in 1989. Since then, there have been substantial changes in the law, the Book of Order of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and best practices for non-profit, religious organizations. As a result, a year ago the Session began the process of revising the Bylaws, with input from the Deacon Board, as well as, attorneys in the congregation. The result of this process is a thorough rework-ing of the Bylaws to comply with the many provisions of the Book of Order, as well as California law. It is now ready to be shared with the congregation with an invitation for comments. The document can be found at www.pointlomachurch.org/bylaws. You will see three documents on the website. One is the official Draft (we are calling it the “Clean Draft” of the proposed Bylaws). The other is an annotated version of the document; it contains a number of footnotes that describe the bases in the Book of Order and the law for some of the provisions. Additionally, there is a cover letter that further explains each document. Because there are so many changes from the 1989 Bylaws, it is impractical to do a “redline” version to highlight the changes. Here is our sense of the major changes from the old to the new:
The new Bylaws combine the church (as a congregation) and corporation into a single, unified structure and organization. The Session is clearly identified as the Board of Directors.
The new Bylaws increase the flexibility of the Board of Directors by allowing for a range in the size of the Session from 15-21 (previously it was a fixed number of 24).
The duties and functions of the church officers are clarified and updated.
Elders and Deacons, consistent with the Book of Order, will be able to serve more than one term (if re-elected by the congregation), but not more than six consecutive years.
Updated financial structures (including audits and financial reporting) are put in place.
The new Bylaws provide for a range of “Standing Rules” to meet obligations of the Book of Order or legal requirements. If you have comments or recommendations about the Bylaws, please send them to Elder Steve Smith, [email protected]. Comments should be made by January 15, 2017, so that the Session may consider the comments at its meeting on January 25 to be ready for adoption at our Annual Congregational Meeting on February 5, 2017. The Session expresses the gratitude of the many members of the church who have spent long hours working on these Bylaws. Some have suggested that they might be a template for others in our denomination and it is our intention to make them available to other churches.
The Tree of Life The Tree of Life in the Family Life Center provides an opportunity for an enduring record of persons and events in the life of our church, its families and friends. Since Beverly Smith’s design and the
crafting by John L. Spafford in 1990, the two trees of the display have sprouted hundreds of leaves documenting the rich history of our community.
To request a leaf, please complete the form in the church office.
