• 18 empty cups• 6 cups full of powder (A, 1-6)• 6 toothpicks• 6 plastic spoons• 6 black paper squares• 3 liquid bottles (water, vinegar,

iodine)• 1 wood stirring stick• 1 plastic cup, rubbing alcohol on

bottom

• 1 marked up piece of chromatography paper with a hole punched in it

• 1 scrap of paper (for test and unspecified evidence ideas)

• Handouts: answer sheet, prints packet

• Paper towelAdults only: • Carefully twist the cap off of each

liquid bottle, make sure each bottle has a dropper tip on it, and remove plastic ring; put caps back on

WHAT CHROMATOGRAPHY LOOKS LIKE

• Chromatography: the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension through a medium in which the components move at different rates.• In other words: using rubbing alcohol to separate the

parts of ink (which move at different speeds) across chromatography paper. This creates a unique design for each type of ink.

PROCESS

How we’ll do this for best results:

1. Put the wood stirring stick through the hole punched in the filter paper

2. Using the stirring stick, place the bottom edge of the filter paper into the rubbing alcohol, making sure that it does not get caught on the edges of the cup and is centered in the cup

3. Wait. Do not touch again until told to do so
