Panama City | PanamaFounded in 1519 by the Spanish

conquistadors, Panama City is home

to incredible architectural and ethnic

diversity. The region boasts a variety of

culinary styles and Panamanian dishes,

which are a unique blend of Spanish,

African and Native American cuisine. An

overnight stay lets you explore all day and

return to shore for nightlife and cocktails!

Golfito | Costa RicaSet against a beautiful backdrop of steep

green hills and pristine rainforest, Golfito

is a gateway to the renowned Osa

Peninsula and Corcovado National Park—

one of the few remaining lowland tropical

rainforests in the world. An overnight in

Golfito allows extra time to fully appreciate

the region’s incredible species of rare

flora, fauna, birds and animals.

Quepos | Costa RicaQuepos is renowned for sport fishing, the

Damas Estuary and the popular Manuel

Antonio National Park. This tropical inlet

possesses an enthralling bistro of herons,

crocodiles, monkeys and three-toed

sloths as well as inviting, velvety sands

for relaxing after a day of adventures.

Puntarenas | Costa RicaThis colorful town was Costa Rica’s main

trading port until the 1890s. With a coast-

line featuring glorious beaches, islands,

inlets and bewitching natural treasures,

Puntarenas’ trove of outdoor activities and

fantastic cuisine are sure to delight. We

especially recommend the fresh cerviche

and copo, a sweet, icy drink with syrup.

Imagine a destination where serpentine

shores kiss the sea and mountains vanish

into misty cloud forests; where you wake

to ocean melodies and fall asleep to

whispering sea breezes; and where you

stroll by colonial architecture one day and

virgin jungles the next. Here, amid the

wonders of Cuba, Panama and Costa Rica,

rediscover the simple pleasures of life.

Listen to the laughter of seagulls and follow

the rhythms of salsa music through

cobbled lanes. See Latin American culture

past and present, and delight in a tropical

menagerie as you transit the Panama Canal

to some of earth’s richest eco-preserves.

Balance your journey with Optional Shore

Excursions, which show you the intimate

heart of each destination, and leisure time

to unwind before coppery sunsets. The sun

on your back, the tickle of sand on your

toes, and the scenic wonders of nature

at your fingertips—this is sure to be one

of your best adventures yet!

Havana | CubaCuba: The name evokes images of cigar-

puffing men and classic cars; buildings

trimmed in faded pastels; and echoes of

rhythmic salsa beats. From vintage hints of a

past splendor to its medley of charismatic

citizens, Cuba’s vivacity is simply palpable,

and digging beneath its surface will uncover a

truly exotic and compelling destination.

During an overnight in Havana, take the time

to discover the city’s musicality, join a

lively soccer game along the Malecón, or sip

a cold Mojito. Whatever you do, you’re sure

to be captivated by Cuba’s bewitching spirit!

Sixteenth-century Spanish explorers hoped to find a shortcut

between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans via a canal at the Isthmus of

Panama. Balboa conceived the possibility in 1513, but the daunting

prospect was eventually forgotten. Finally, 350 years later, Ferdinand

de Lesseps unsuccessfully attempted to build a canal as he had

done at Suez. Disease, scandal, rain, corruption and the jungle took

their toll, and an estimated 16,000-20,000 workers died.

In 1900, the United States took over the huge task, and

Theodore Roosevelt began construction in 1902, testing the

strength and intelligence of more than 35,000 men. Working

conditions were devastating; tropical diseases threatened lives

and temperatures often rose to 130°F.

The work continued and the world’s largest artificial lake at

that time, Gatun, was created. A winding, eight-mile channel called

the “Gaillard Cut” was hewed through the Continental Divide. Six

locks were built to raise and lower ships to a height of 85 feet.

In the 1970s, the United States and Panama agreed that the

canal ownership would revert to Panama on December 31, 1999.

Traversing the canal—feeling the ship rise and descend as the

locks are opened and shut—is an unforgettable experience!
