Approximately 620 guests attended the Spokane Go Red for Women luncheon on Feb. 11. Featuring Olympic gold medalist and Pacific Northwest native Ariana Kukors as the keynote speaker, the annual event netted $145,000 to raise awareness of and fund research for women’s cardiac health.

On April 2, the Spokane Public Library Foundation and the City of Spokane recognized 12 individuals, both living and deceased, for contributions to local life with the Spokane Citizen Hall of Fame. The event raised over $15,000 for the Spokane Public Library. Patricia “Patty” Hill, Miss Spokane Tribe, accepted a key to the City from Mayor David Condon on behalf of historic inductee Chief Spokan Garry, CA. 1811-1892.

“The Spokane Citizen Hall of Fame allows us to honor great citizens who have had a signifi cant impact on the city. Not only does it recognize the great work those citizens have done for their city but it also provides a venue for others to learn and be inspired by them.” —Dr. Bernie Bank, President, Spokane Public Library Foundation Board of Directors

FIRE

With an outdoor FIRE pit, you can enjoy your beautiful backyard well past the prime of summer, especially when coupled with a pergola to provide cover from the rain.

STONE

STONEWORK is an obvious choice when landscaping a sloped yard. Plus, leveled yards are much easier to maintain —no awkward mowing—and stonework creates distinct areas for gardening, walking and most importantly, relaxing.

WATER

Gentle rushing WATER…white noise drowning out life’s troubles…your own backyard oasis. Add a waterfall to a pool to create a calm space... at least, until the kids start playing mermaid lagoon.

COOKING. . .

Storage SpaceBuild enough shelves and drawers to keep your kitchen fully operational without raiding your inside dishes. If you’re going the disposable route, try compostable plates, cups and utensils that can be discarded with food waste. hayneedle.com

Refrigerator/Freezer Not only are chilled beverages and Popsicles always on hand, but an outdoor fridge can be consistently stocked with lunch items and produce for quick, healthy meals. Plus, a lock to keep unruly rodents—or neighbors—out of your stash! bbqguys.com

One of the best parts of barbecuing is enjoying your outdoor space. But everything that has to be done inside can be a drag. When designing your outdoor kitchen, consider these elements to get the most enjoyment out of your yard.

Hybrid GrillYou don’t have to choose between gas, wood or charcoal anymore when you outfi t your patio with a hybrid grill. Prepare a wood-fi red pizza on one side of your grill while roasting vegetables with propane on the other. kalamazoogourmet.com

Faucet & SinkA faucet and sink is an absolute must if you’re preparing food outside. Choose a material that will withstand a blistering summer as well as a frigid winter, such as stainless steel, which happens to look great with a shiny grill. justsinks.com

Summer Reading ListSummer Reading ListBEHIND THE

BOOK JACKETWhat’s your ideal summer reading material? The answer

is as diverse as summer readers themselves. Some enjoy something lightweight, others may prefer to dive into

something a little meatier. Whatever your taste, the following books will defi nitely be among this summer’s hottest reads.

THE QUARTET: ORCHESTRATINGTHE SECOND AMERICAN REVOLUTIONOur collective knowledge of America’s earliest days often is just the highlight reel: dumped tea, stoic river crossings and (mostly) legally-binding documents. But Joseph Ellis shares the post-victory personal and political turmoil our Founding Fathers faced when the dust settled.Published May 12, 2015, by Knopf

GO SET A WATCHMANGreat things come to those who wait, especially if you ever wanted to read more from Harper Lee, author of “To Kill a Mockingbird.” A recently discovered manuscript she wrote prior to “Mockingbird” is set 30 years after the events of the classic fi rst book.Publishing July 14, 2015, by Harper

THE GIRL ON THE TRAINLet’s pull that brake before you start rolling your eyes about yet another murder mystery set on a train. This piece by Paula Hawkins about a crime a woman thinks she may or may not have seen on her morning commute is quite fast-moving.Published Jan. 13, 2015, by Riverhead Books

GOD HELP THE CHILDTalk about great buzz: this summer release by celebrated author Toni Morrison is already being called the best book you’ll read this year. The subject matter — how we cope as adults with childhood trauma — is poignant and passionate.Published April 21, 2015, by Knopf

CITY BY CITY: DISPATCHES FROM THE AMERICAN METROPOLISStatistically-speaking, demographic info can be downright dull to anyone except for pure numbers people. But Keith Gessen and Stephen Squibb are able to make pure data downright interesting by using it to paint portraits of urban life.Published May 12, 2015, by n + 1/FSG

This year, The Art Spirit Gallery in Coeur d’Alene launched the Young Patrons Club to reverse perceptions by Millennials that they do not know what ‘good art’ is and can’t afford it.

“We create a comfortable environment with their peers…and beers,” said gallery employee Blair Williams, so young people can learn about different kinds of art.

Gallery owner Steve Gibbs added, “Art can be anything that enhances the quality of your life, that has an impact on you. When you see it in your home, it inspires you.”

The Art Spirit Gallery also provides patrons with options for timed payment.

Another unique program for new investors is the Northwest Museum of Art and Culture’s Art @ Work (and Home) program, which rents art for as low as $90 and up to $165 for a three-month period.

“Sometimes the many different choices of artwork can be overwhelming,” said program manager Tammy Gabbert, right.

As an art consultant, Gabbert presents options best-suited to create balance and unity in a potential buyer’s space.

Participants can try out a piece in their home or workplace, then apply a portion of the rental price toward a purchase, with discounts for MAC members. There is also an option to continue to rent and change art every three months.

Beginning an art collection shouldn’t be intimidating, and local gallery owners want first-time buyers to know it. uatYO

When creating The Grand, owner Walt Worthy had the practical goal of creating more rooms for Spokane visitors – but his second goal may be the best: to wow everyone who sets foot inside. This can be seen from the small touches like walk-in showers and marble counters in the bathrooms to custom-made furniture.

AGRThe new hoteldominating Spokane’s skyline isn’t just goingto be great – it’s going to be GRAND. That adjective perfectlydescribes the fourth hotel in the Davenport Collection:The Davenport Grand, which opens JUNE 20 this summer.

Guests expecting the elegance and class of the Historical Davenport Hotel, the Davenport Tower and the Davenport Hotel Lusso will get it—and then some.

THE NEW STRUCTURE INCLUDES:

• A total of 716 non-smoking guest rooms and 40 suites, ranging in size from 452 to 3,000 square feet, with one or two king beds and 55-inch LED HDTVs.

• More than 64,000 square feet of meeting space, including an 18,000 square foot ballroom.

• Skywalks that easily connect to the Spokane Convention Center and the INB Performing Arts Center.

• Fine-dining options at The Grand Restaurant and Lounge, followed by cocktails at the Grand Terrace Bar, or a pick-me-up at a lobby Starbucks.

with STEM CELL THERAPY!

(7246)

Pain MD_0309

Stem cells are natural cells found in

your body. They heal damaged tissue

because they have the ability to change

into any type of tissue in the body

depending on what needs to be healed.

Joints, cartilage, ligaments, muscles

and bones are constantly breaking

down and our body is constantly

working to rebuild them with the help

of our own stem cells. After the age of

40, however, the number and strength

of our stem cells in our bodies decreases

significantly. That’s why a cut on your

finger at the age of 21 heals a lot faster

than it does when you are 65. Stem cell

therapy can cure this problem.

At Pain M.D., we use amniotic stem

cells that are harvested from a donating

mother during a scheduled C section

and processed at one of three FDA

approved stem cell labs. The cells go

through rigorous testing before they are

sent to our clinics. Because amniotic

stem cells are neutral, a patient will

not reject or react to them. They are

completely safe.

We have seen extremely favorable

outcomes treating knee pain, back

pain, neuropathy hip pain and

shoulder pain.

• No adverse side effects

• One time treatment

• No down time

• We are the only clinic in the region performing stem cell therapy

• Affordable

At Pain MD, we have treated 100’s of people just like you with results that are even higher than the national average for replacement surgery. Risk of serious infection and death can be as high as 10% in elderly patients during a replacement surgery. (1) Conversely, with this one time treatment, the only risk is risk of infection from the injection site, which is extremely minimal with proper sterilization practice. The stem cells we use are immuno-privileged and there has never been an adverse reaction ever reported…they are completely safe. This very effective option of harnessing your body’s own healing potential should be tried first before resorting to more dangerous options.

A“The Davenport Grand represents a singular, high-personality hotel that doesn’t just offer the guest a unique experience—but actually defines it,” said Davenport Hotel Collection President & CEO Walt Worthy. “The hotel has a colorful modern interior that travelers would not expect to see in Spokane. This hotel creates a vital element for downtown by improving the hotel offerings and attracting larger conventions and conferences from all over the world.”

ND

Centrally located within Spokane’s entertainment and shopping areas, this urban getaway delights with a cool, contemporary aesthetic. Amongst the new offerings is a 200-seat rooftop terrace bar overlooking the popular Riverfront Park. Designed to be LEED certified, in keeping with the Spokane Convention Center, it is green in the truest sense. The technology in the hotel is impressive and beyond expectation. A part of the Autograph Collection of hotels, it is distinctively individualized, stylishly unconventional and uncompromisingly upscale.

Glamping is to camping as Sunday brunch is to Sunday buffet. Both offer tasty treats and provide excellent ways

to socialize while noshing. And not that there’s anything wrong with the buffet experience, but brunch brings

a certain classiness and elegance in terms of the setting and quality. So think of glamping

as a fancy way to enjoy nature – instead of being crammed into a cramped, musty,

dusty tent, you sleep on a soft bed inside a spacious and sturdier tent.

Meals are cooked by a gourmet chef and you don’t have to

worry about clean-up. You’ll still be near nature, but

not nearly as near as fellow campers who

strangely equate “roughing it”

with “good times.”

“A fancy way to enjoy nature”These tent cabins with hotel amenities promise to change your mind about camping. Think wooden fl oors, fi ne linens, a private shower and a make-or-break fi xture for reluctant campers – a private bathroom with a fl ush toilet. glampinghub.com

Clear your head with a trip to Idaho’s Clearwater River and a stay that promises “rustic luxury.” Guests stay in classy cabins or elegant king-sized wall tents, and have easy access to outdoor recreation – or to opt for absolutely nothing except a soak in the private hot tub. riverdancelodge.com
